Chapter 8: The People Watching From the Shadows

The picture on my phone burned into my mind.

Sophie.

Walking home from school.

Alone.

Someone had been close enough to take that photo.

Someone had been watching my daughter.

My hands went numb.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything Rachel was saying.

All I could see was my little girl’s face.

The same face that had been covered by tears in that bridal suite.

The same face that had whispered, “Daddy, please don’t marry her.””

And now someone was using her to scare me.

Rachel reached across the table.

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

“Call the police.””

My first instinct was to refuse.

Not because I didn’t want help.

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that involving authorities would create exactly what Vanessa wanted.

A public battle.

A legal mess.

A situation where Sophie became a piece on a board.

But then I looked at the picture again.

Fear was already controlling my daughter’s life.

I couldn’t let it control mine.

I called.

The police arrived within an hour.

Detective Harris was the same officer who had called me after Vanessa’s report.

He studied the message carefully.

Then the photo.

“When did you receive this?””

“Twenty minutes ago.””

“Who has access to your daughter’s schedule?””

I looked at Rachel.

Then answered.

“Several people.””

“Names.””

I listed them.

School staff.

Family members.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Thomas.

When I said Thomas, Detective Harris looked up.

“Thomas Reed?””

“You know him?””

He wrote something down.

“We’ve heard that name before.””

My chest tightened.

“From who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

“That’s something we’re looking into.””

I hated that phrase.

Looking into.

Investigating.

Waiting.

Because while everyone investigated, my daughter was the one being threatened.

“What about the picture?””

The detective zoomed in.

“It appears to have been taken from a distance.””

“Can you identify the location?””

He studied it.

“Looks like near the school entrance.””

My stomach dropped.

“Someone was there.””

“Yes.””

“Today?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“Then someone is still close.””

Detective Harris looked at me seriously.

“Mr. Carter, I need you to stay calm.””

“I am calm.””

My voice surprised even me.

Because I wasn’t.

I was terrified.

But fear had changed.

Before, fear made me freeze.

Now, it made me move.

“I need to protect my daughter.””

The detective nodded.

“That’s exactly why you need to make careful decisions.””

Then he looked at Rachel.

“Do you have any emergency custody filings prepared?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

I looked between them.

“Emergency custody?””

Rachel’s expression was serious.

“Daniel, after everything we have, we need to assume Vanessa may try to take physical control of Sophie.””

The words felt impossible.

But not anymore.

Nothing felt impossible.

That night, I moved Sophie into my bedroom.

Not because she was a baby.

Because she needed to feel safe.

She noticed immediately.

“Am I sleeping here?””

I smiled.

“Only for tonight.””

She looked worried.

“Because of Vanessa?””

I nodded.

She was quiet.

Then:

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Did I ruin your wedding?””

The question broke me.

I sat beside her.

“No.””

“But if I didn’t tell…”

“No.””

I held her hands.

“Listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You could never ruin something that wasn’t right.””

She blinked.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the wedding wasn’t important.””

“But you loved her.””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

“Do you still?””

The honesty of a child.

No judgment.

Just curiosity.

I thought about Vanessa.

The woman who had held my hand.

The woman who had planned our future.

The woman who had hurt my daughter.

“No.””

Sophie nodded slowly.

“Good.””

I almost smiled.

“Good?””

“She was scary.””

The simplicity of it hurt.

“She smiled a lot.””

“Yes.””

“She was nice to everyone.””

“Yes.””

“But not when you weren’t there.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Sophie looked down.

“She said people only act nice when someone is watching.””

A chill ran through me.

Because Vanessa understood that better than anyone.

She had built her entire life around being watched.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“Daniel, we found something.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“Marcus.””

My jaw tightened.

“What about him?””

“He withdrew from your case.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He filed a conflict notice.””

“Why?””

Rachel paused.

“Because he’s officially representing Vanessa now.””

The room went silent.

“He’s her attorney?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

The man who knew my entire legal history.

The man who knew my weaknesses.

The man who knew everything about my family.

Was now standing across from me.

Rachel continued.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“Marcus requested access to old documents from Claire’s estate.””

My stomach turned.

“Why?””

“We don’t know.””

But I knew.

He was searching.

Searching for whatever Claire had discovered.

Searching for the same thing Vanessa wanted.

The trust.

The inheritance.

The secret.

“I need to find Thomas Reed.””

Rachel was quiet.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“Be careful.””

“I will.””

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“I mean it. You’re starting to see everyone around Vanessa as an enemy.””

“Because many of them are.””

“Maybe.””

She paused.

“But don’t let anger make you predictable.””

I hated that she was right.

For years, I trusted too easily.

Now I wanted to trust no one.

Both extremes were dangerous.

Finding Thomas was harder than expected.

There were records.

Old company information.

Employment history.

Connections.

But nothing recent.

Until Olivia found something.

“He changed his name.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She placed a document on the table.

“Thomas Reed used to be Thomas Whitaker.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“He was involved in a lawsuit years ago.””

“What kind?””

“Financial fraud.””

My stomach tightened.

“Was Marcus involved?””

Olivia nodded.

“They’re brothers.””

The room went quiet.

I sat back.

Marcus and Thomas.

Brothers.

One handling legal documents.

The other helping Vanessa.

The entire operation suddenly made sense.

They had connections.

They had knowledge.

They had access.

But there was still one question.

Why Vanessa?

Why would she trust them?

Then Olivia answered before I asked.

“She didn’t find them.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“They found her.””

That afternoon, I received an email.

No sender.

No signature.

Only one attachment.

A video.

My first thought was not to open it.

Every instinct told me it was a trap.

But then I saw the title.

*Claire_Final_Message*

My hands shook.

Another video?

Another secret?

I clicked.

The screen showed Claire again.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

She was sitting in our old living room.

The room where Sophie took her first steps.

The room where Claire and I danced after we found out we were having a baby.

Claire looked directly at the camera.

“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, then I was right to be afraid.””

My breathing stopped.

She continued.

“I discovered something about Vanessa that I never had time to fully explain.””

She looked down.

“She didn’t choose you randomly.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She knew about your family before she met you.””

I leaned closer.

Claire continued.

“She knew about Sophie before you ever introduced them.””

I froze.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

The video continued.

“I found records showing Vanessa had been asking questions about my father’s trust long before she entered our lives.””

My hands clenched.

“She wasn’t trying to join our family.””

Claire looked directly at the camera.

“She was trying to access it.””

The video paused for a second.

Then Claire said the sentence that changed everything.

“Daniel, there is one person who can prove all of this.””

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

Claire looked toward someone off-camera.

Then back.

“Someone you already know.””

The screen flickered.

And a voice appeared.

A voice I recognized.

My blood froze.

Because it was Vanessa.

But not the Vanessa I knew.

This Vanessa sounded angry.

Cold.

Calculating.

The recording captured only a few seconds.

But it was enough.

“Once Daniel signs the guardianship papers, Sophie becomes the key.””

I stopped breathing.

Then Vanessa’s voice continued.

“And when the trust transfers…”

The video cut off.

I stared at the black screen.

The room was silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A whisper came through.

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

It was Vanessa.

But she wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t pretending.

She was calm.

“Where did you get that video?””

I didn’t answer.

Her voice lowered.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

I stood.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Looking at your house.””

My entire body went cold.

I moved toward the window.

Across the street, a dark car sat parked beneath the trees.

The headlights were off.

“Vanessa…”

She whispered:

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

The car door opened.

“And if you don’t stop digging…”

A figure stepped out.

“…you’re going to lose more than your daughter.””

The call ended.

And the person standing outside my house…

May you like

was not Vanessa.

It was someone else.
