Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew Claire’s Secret

I read the message five times before my brain accepted what I was seeing.

*Claire’s sister, Olivia.*

My thumb hovered over the screen.

For four years, I had believed Olivia had moved across the country after Claire’s funeral. She had sent a few messages in the months after the accident, but eventually the conversations stopped.

Not because we had fought.

Not because there was anger between us.

Because grief had a way of making people disappear.

Everyone handled losing Claire differently.

I buried myself in work.

I focused on Sophie.

I tried to keep moving because stopping meant remembering the moment doctors told me there was nothing more they could do.

Olivia disappeared because, according to Vanessa, “she couldn’t handle being around reminders of Claire.””

At the time, I believed her.

Now, I questioned everything.

I typed back.

*Where are you?*

The response came almost instantly.

*The old coffee shop on Willow Street. Thirty minutes. Come alone.*

I stared at those words.

Come alone.

Normally, I would have considered that suspicious.

But after everything I had discovered, I knew one thing.

I needed answers.

I needed to know why Claire’s name was being used.

I needed to know what Vanessa had been hiding.

Most importantly, I needed to know if there was anything else Sophie had been forced to carry alone.

Before leaving, I checked on Sophie.

She was asleep on the couch.

Her stuffed rabbit was tucked under her chin.

I stood there for a long time.

Six years old.

That was all she was.

She should have been worried about school projects and cartoons.

Not whether the person living in her home would hurt her.

I grabbed a blanket and covered her carefully.

Then I whispered:

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.””

I knew she couldn’t hear me.

But I needed to say it.

Because I had spent so much time promising to protect her.

And somehow, I had failed to see what was happening right in front of me.

The coffee shop was nearly empty when I arrived.

A small bell rang above the door.

And then I saw her.

Olivia.

She looked older.

Not dramatically.

Just tired.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.

She stood when she saw me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel.””

I nodded.

“Olivia.””

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Those were the first words out of her mouth.

Not hello.

Not how have you been.

I’m sorry.

I sat across from her.

“Why did you contact me now?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because I thought you would find out eventually.””

“Find out what?””

Her hands tightened around her coffee cup.

“The truth about Vanessa.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What truth?””

Olivia took a deep breath.

“She was never honest with you.””

I almost smiled.

“Yeah. I figured that out.””

“No.””

Her eyes met mine.

“You don’t understand.””

The seriousness in her voice made me sit straighter.

“What don’t I understand?””

She reached into her bag and placed a small envelope on the table.

“This belonged to Claire.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“From Claire?””

Olivia nodded.

My heart stopped.

“Why would you have a letter from my wife?””

“Because she wrote it before she died.””

The room seemed to disappear.

“What?””

Olivia looked down.

“She asked me to keep it safe.””

My voice became quieter.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she was afraid.””

Those words hit me harder than I expected.

Claire.

Afraid.

The woman I knew was fearless.

She was the person who would stand up to anyone.

The person who would argue with a doctor because she researched a treatment they hadn’t considered.

The person who fought for everyone she loved.

“What was she afraid of?””

Olivia looked at the envelope.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

Her voice cracked.

“Claire knew Vanessa before you introduced her to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Olivia nodded slowly.

“They met years ago.””

My mind raced.

Vanessa had told me she barely knew anyone in my life before we started dating.

She had said she was nervous meeting Claire’s family.

She had said she wanted to respect our history.

Every memory suddenly looked different.

“How?””

Olivia swallowed.

“Vanessa worked at the same company Claire did.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because Claire didn’t want you to know.””

“Why?””

Olivia looked away.

“Because Claire thought you would dismiss it.””

“Dismiss what?””

“She thought Vanessa was obsessed with her life.””

A chill moved through me.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know how it sounds.””

Olivia leaned forward.

“But Claire noticed things.””

“What things?””

“She said Vanessa asked too many questions.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

Silence.

“About your marriage.””

Silence.

“About Sophie.””

My stomach tightened.

Olivia continued.

“At first, Claire thought it was harmless. She thought Vanessa was just curious.””

“And then?””

“Then Claire found out Vanessa had been looking through her social media for months.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I stood slightly.

“This is insane.””

Olivia didn’t move.

“I wish it was.””

I sat back down.

My heart was pounding.

“What did Claire do?””

“She confronted her.””

“When?””

“Two months before the accident.””

I stopped breathing.

Two months.

The accident.

A memory flashed through my mind.

Claire had been different during those final weeks.

More quiet.

More protective of Sophie.

I had asked her what was wrong.

She had smiled and said:

“Nothing. I’m just tired.””

I believed her.

Because I wanted to.

“What did Vanessa say when Claire confronted her?””

Olivia looked at me.

“She denied everything.””

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“She threatened Claire.””

The word hung between us.

“Threatened her how?””

Olivia hesitated.

“She told Claire that people would believe her because she was charming.””

I felt sick.

“What else?””

“She said Claire should be careful because accidents happen.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

The coffee shop noise disappeared.

“What are you saying?””

Olivia looked terrified.

“I’m not saying Vanessa caused the accident.””

She said the words quickly.

“I don’t know that.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Claire was scared of her.””

I looked down.

The memory of the hospital came rushing back.

Claire’s hand in mine.

Her weak voice.

Her final words.

I had spent years trying to remember them.

But pain had blurred everything.

“What did Claire say to you before she died?””

Olivia went quiet.

Too quiet.

“Olivia.””

She looked at me.

“She told me to protect Sophie.””

My throat tightened.

“She knew?””

“She knew Vanessa wanted something.””

“What?””

Olivia opened her bag again.

This time she pulled out a small flash drive.

“She found evidence.””

My eyes moved to it.

“What evidence?””

“She never got the chance to show you.””

I stared at the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Olivia’s voice dropped.

“Everything Vanessa tried to hide.””

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched it, my phone rang.

The screen lit up.

Vanessa.

I looked at Olivia.

She immediately looked afraid.

“Don’t answer.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if she knows you’re with me…”

The phone kept ringing.

“What?””

Olivia whispered:

“She’ll know Claire’s letter was found.””

My blood ran cold.

“How would she know?””

Olivia looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

“Because Vanessa has been watching you.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“That’s the reason I waited four years to contact you.””

The phone stopped ringing.

A second later, a notification appeared.

A voicemail.

Then another message.

This time from Vanessa.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*You should have asked me before digging through things that belong to my family.*

My face went numb.

Because I had never told Vanessa about the basement.

I had never told her about Olivia.

I had never told her I found anything.

I slowly looked up.

“How did she know?””

Olivia’s expression answered before her words did.

“Because someone is helping her.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“Who?””

Olivia looked toward the dark window.

And whispered the name of the person I least expected.

“The person who helped Vanessa fake Claire’s signature.””

I waited.

“Who?””

Olivia’s eyes filled with fear.

“Your attorney.””

My heart stopped.

“Marcus?”” I whispered.

Olivia nodded.

And in that moment, I realized something far worse than Vanessa’s betrayal.

May you like

The person I trusted to protect my family…

might have been helping destroy it.
