Chapter 5: My Father's Secret

Richard didn't leave my office for another forty minutes.

He sat opposite me with his hands clasped together, staring at a photograph on my desk.

It showed my father and me standing outside the first warehouse we'd ever renovated.

I was twenty-six.

He was sixty-one.

Both of us were wearing hard hats.

My father had one hand on my shoulder.

The photograph had been taken before Reed Meridian existed as a major development company.

Before the billion-dollar contracts.

Before the glass headquarters.

Before everything.

"Richard," I said, "start from the beginning.""

He nodded slowly.

"In 1998, your father partnered with a man named Victor Hale.""

The name meant nothing to me.

"Who was he?""

"A financier. He specialized in commercial real estate acquisitions. He had money, connections, and a reputation for getting difficult deals completed.""

"Sounds familiar.""

Richard gave a humorless smile.

"That was the problem.""

He continued.

"Your father had just purchased three industrial properties south of Atlanta. The plan was to convert them into distribution centers. Victor offered to provide the financing.""

"And?""

"Your father signed the initial agreement. Then Victor began changing the terms.""

"How?""

"Hidden fees. Inflated valuations. Ownership transfers buried in the contracts.""

I leaned forward.

"Did my father lose the properties?""

"Almost.""

Richard rubbed his chin.

"He discovered the changes before the final closing. But by then, Victor had already arranged for several creditors to demand immediate repayment.""

"What happened?""

"Your father fought him.""

"Legally?""

"Every way he could.""

Richard looked at the photograph.

"Your father spent almost two years fighting the agreements. He sold his personal investments to keep the company alive. At one point, he nearly lost the family home.""

I sat back.

I remembered my father working late.

I remembered him taking calls in the garage.

I remembered the way he would sometimes stare at the kitchen table long after dinner had ended.

But he'd never told me why.

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he wanted you to build your own life without carrying his enemies.""

I looked at Richard.

"And Northstar?""

"Victor's son, Alexander Hale, founded it. He's been trying to acquire properties connected to your father for years.""

I stared at the screen.

"Is Alexander working with Daniel?""

Richard hesitated.

"I believe so.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel approached me about a private investment partnership three months ago.""

I narrowed my eyes.

"You never mentioned that.""

"I didn't think it was relevant. He said he was exploring opportunities outside Reed Meridian.""

"What kind of opportunities?""

"Commercial property acquisitions.""

"Using company information?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Atlanta stretched beneath me.

A city my father had helped build.

A city where his name was engraved on buildings, where his company had employed thousands of workers, and where families lived in homes made possible by his stubborn refusal to quit.

Now someone was using that name to steal from the foundation he'd created.

"Richard, I want everything you know about Victor and Alexander Hale.""

He nodded.

"There's something else.""

I turned.

Richard reached into his briefcase and removed a yellowed envelope.

The paper was creased.

The edges had begun to turn brown.

"Your father gave me this shortly before he died.""

I stared at it.

"Why?""

"He told me to keep it until the right time.""

I picked it up.

My father's handwriting was unmistakable.

*For Marcus. Only if the Hales return.*

My throat tightened.

I opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a letter and a small flash drive.

I unfolded the letter.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, then Victor's family has come back into our lives.

I hope I was wrong.

There is something I never told you about the first company. Something I believed had been settled.

If Northstar approaches Reed Meridian, do not negotiate with them until you have reviewed the original partnership records.

The truth is not in the financial statements.

It's in the people who signed them.

Trust Richard. He knows where the documents are.

And whatever happens, do not let them acquire the property on Briarwood Avenue.

I read the final paragraph twice.

Briarwood Avenue.

The property was currently part of Reed Meridian's redevelopment portfolio.

It contained a warehouse, several commercial buildings, and an abandoned manufacturing site.

We had plans to turn it into a mixed-use community development.

"Richard.""

He looked at me.

"What's on this flash drive?""

"I don't know. Your father never gave me the password.""

I looked at the envelope again.

There was a second piece of paper inside.

A handwritten number.

1998.

I turned the flash drive over.

A tiny label was attached.

*MERIDIAN ORIGINALS.*

"Have IT examine this.""

Richard nodded.

I put the letter inside the envelope.

Then my phone rang.

Emily.

"Mr. Reed, Daniel is here.""

I looked at the clock.

12:06 p.m.

"Where?""

"Lobby. Security says he's demanding to see you.""

"Did you tell him he's no longer authorized to enter the building?""

"Yes. He refuses to leave.""

I sighed.

"Bring him to the security conference room. I'll meet him there.""

Richard stood.

"Marcus, be careful.""

"I intend to be.""

Daniel was standing beside the conference table when I entered.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His eyes were bloodshot.

He looked nothing like the confident executive who had arrived for the morning meeting.

"Marcus.""

"Daniel.""

He glanced toward Richard.

"I'd prefer to speak privately.""

"Then you should have arranged an appointment.""

Daniel exhaled.

"Please. I need five minutes.""

I sat.

"You have three.""

He remained standing.

"I didn't know the money was going to be transferred today.""

I looked at him.

"That's a start.""

"Vanessa told me the property agreement was legitimate.""

"Which property agreement?""

"The Whitmore Property Holdings deal.""

I said nothing.

Daniel rubbed his face.

"She said the foundation had already approved the acquisition. She told me you were aware of it.""

"And the $7.8 million?""

He swallowed.

"I thought it was an escrow payment.""

"To an offshore account?""

"I didn't know that.""

"Did you approve the banking access change?""

Daniel stared at the floor.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He looked up.

"Because Alexander Hale offered me a partnership.""

Richard stiffened.

I remained still.

"What kind of partnership?""

"A development company. We were going to acquire distressed commercial properties and resell them.""

"Using my company's information?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

"How long have you been working with him?""

"Six months.""

Richard shook his head.

"Six months?""

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Maybe longer.""

"Did you know he was using Vanessa's company to receive money?""

"I knew there were consulting payments.""

"Did you know the services weren't performed?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Some of them.""

The room became very quiet.

I studied him.

"Why?""

He gave a bitter laugh.

"Because I wanted something of my own.""

"You were making over four hundred thousand dollars a year.""

"That wasn't enough.""

"Enough for what?""

He looked at me.

"Enough to matter.""

I stared at him.

Daniel continued.

"You had everything. The company. The properties.

The influence. People listened when you spoke. You could walk into any room in Atlanta and everyone knew who you were.""

I leaned back.

"And you thought stealing from the company would make you important?""

He looked away.

"I thought I could build something without always being second.""

Richard spoke sharply.

"You were given an opportunity most people would never receive.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

"Because every time I brought an idea to Marcus, he changed it, delayed it, or handed the project to someone else!""

I looked at him.

"Give me one example.""

He hesitated.

"The Midtown acquisition.""

"You mean the deal where your valuation was twenty percent above market and your partner refused to disclose the financing source?""

Daniel said nothing.

I continued.

"I rejected the deal because it was reckless. Not because I wanted to humiliate you.""

He looked down.

For a moment, the anger left his face.

Then he spoke again.

"Alexander said you would never let me become anything more than an employee.""

I almost laughed.

"Alexander Hale told you that?""

"Yes.""

"And you believed him?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I stood.

"Where is he now?""

"I don't know.""

"Where is Vanessa?""

"She called me this morning. She said she was going to her mother's house.""

"Does she know about the offshore transfer?""

Daniel nodded.

"She knows everything.""

I looked at Richard.

"Did you hear that?""

Richard nodded.

I turned back to Daniel.

"Did you tell her to move the original documents?""

Daniel froze.

I stepped closer.

"You called her during the meeting. You told her not to discuss the property agreement. Then you mentioned original documents.""

He swallowed.

"What documents?""

I held his gaze.

"The documents you just admitted helping Alexander Hale create.""

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then he reached into his jacket.

Richard immediately stood.

"Don't move.""

Daniel slowly removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"There's something you need to see.""

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of an old contract.

The paper was dated October 1998.

The signatures at the bottom belonged to my father and Victor Hale.

But there was another name.

A third signature.

A name I recognized immediately.

Richard Lawson.

I looked up.

Richard had gone completely still.

"What's this?""

He didn't answer.

I pushed the photograph toward him.

"Richard?""

He slowly sat down.

Then he whispered something I never expected to hear.

"Your father didn't lose that deal because of Victor Hale.""

I stared at him.

"Then why?""

Richard looked directly into my eyes.

"Because someone inside Reed Meridian gave Victor the original ownership documents.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Richard's lips trembled.

May you like

Then he pointed toward the photograph.

"Me.""
