Chapter 4: The $7.8 Million Disappeared

For three seconds, I couldn't move.

The notification remained on Emily's tablet.

*$7,800,000 — SUCCESSFULLY AUTHORIZED.*

I read it again.

Then I looked at the time.

9:18 a.m.

The transfer wasn't supposed to happen until four.

"Emily, call the bank. Now.""

She was already dialing.

Richard stood so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.

"How is that possible?""

Thomas Blake had gone completely pale.

"I don't understand," he whispered.

I turned toward him.

"You're the chief financial officer. I suggest you start understanding very quickly.""

He shook his head.

"That authorization shouldn't have been possible without your physical security token.""

"Correct.""

"Then someone must have duplicated the credentials.""

I stared at him.

"Who had access?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Only a handful of people.""

"Names.""

He swallowed.

"Your office. My office. Daniel Whitmore. And the external banking administrator.""

I looked at Emily.

"Get me the administrator's name.""

She covered the phone's microphone.

"Gregory Shaw. He's been handling the foundation's institutional accounts for six years.""

"Call him.""

Emily put the bank on speaker.

A woman's voice answered first.

"Good morning. First National Corporate Banking. How may I direct your call?""

"This is Emily Carter from Reed Meridian Development. We need to speak with Gregory Shaw immediately regarding a fraudulent transfer.""

The receptionist paused.

"Please hold.""

Thirty seconds passed.

Then a man's voice came through.

"This is Gregory.""

I leaned toward the phone.

"Gregory, this is Marcus Reed.""

"Mr. Reed. Good morning.""

"An unauthorized transfer of $7.8 million has just been released from the foundation's account.""

Silence.

Then Gregory cleared his throat.

"Yes, sir. We received the authorization.""

"Who submitted it?""

"The request came through your executive portal.""

"Did you verify it?""

"It passed the digital authentication requirements.""

"That wasn't my question.""

Gregory hesitated.

"The authorization included your electronic signature and the required verification code.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Gregory, I did not authorize that transfer.""

His voice changed.

"Sir, are you certain?""

I stared at him.

"Do you think I accidentally transferred nearly eight million dollars?""

"No, sir. I apologize.""

"Where did the money go?""

"The receiving account belongs to Whitmore Property Holdings.""

I glanced at Vanessa.

She was standing beside the door, clutching her handbag.

"Freeze the receiving account.""

"We've already initiated a recall request.""

"Initiated isn't completed.""

"Unfortunately, the funds have already moved.""

My stomach tightened.

"Moved where?""

Gregory lowered his voice.

"To an offshore correspondent account.""

Richard swore under his breath.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

"How long ago?""

"Approximately twelve minutes.""

I looked at the clock.

9:20.

Twelve minutes.

Someone had moved $7.8 million before most of Atlanta had finished breakfast.

"Gregory, listen carefully. I want the transaction logs, IP records, authentication history, and every document associated with this transfer.""

"Yes, sir.""

"And I want your security department to preserve everything. Nobody deletes a single record.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Emily looked at me.

"Should I contact federal authorities?""

"Yes. Have our general counsel contact the appropriate financial crimes investigators. Give them the transaction information and preserve the evidence.""

Thomas stood.

"Mr. Reed, I need to explain something.""

I turned toward him.

"Go ahead.""

He looked uncomfortable.

"About six weeks ago, Daniel asked me to approve a temporary change to the foundation's banking permissions.""

"What change?""

"He said it was necessary because you were traveling and needed someone to handle urgent transactions.""

I stared at him.

"Did I authorize that?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No, sir.""

"Then why did you approve it?""

"Daniel told me the board had already discussed it.""

"Did you check?""

He didn't answer.

I walked toward him.

"Thomas, you manage millions of dollars in charitable assets. You don't approve access changes because someone tells you the board discussed them.""

"I know.""

"Apparently, you don't.""

His shoulders dropped.

"I made a mistake.""

"You're being placed on administrative leave effective immediately.""

Thomas looked at Richard.

"Richard?""

Richard didn't respond.

Emily quietly gathered the financial documents.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"This has nothing to do with me.""

Everyone turned.

She lifted her chin.

"I don't work for Reed Meridian. I don't control its bank accounts. If Daniel did something, you need to speak to him.""

I studied her face.

"Your company received more than a million dollars in questionable payments. Your initials are on an inflated property agreement. Your husband is the regional executive who requested the banking access change.""

"Those are coincidences.""

"That's a remarkable number of coincidences.""

Her eyes flashed.

"You can't accuse me without proof.""

"I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm asking questions.""

She grabbed her handbag.

"Then ask someone else.""

She headed for the door.

Emily stepped aside but didn't open it.

"Ms. Reed, our legal department has requested that you remain available for questions.""

Vanessa glared at her.

"Do you know who I am?""

Emily didn't blink.

"Yes. You're a visitor in a restricted financial office.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Marcus, you're enjoying this.""

I shook my head.

"No. I'm trying to recover money that belongs to families who need affordable housing.""

For the first time, she had nothing to say.

By 10:15, the building had become a controlled environment.

Security reviewed camera footage.

IT specialists locked down executive credentials.

Our legal team began contacting banks and regulators.

And every minute that passed made the situation worse.

At 10:42, Emily entered my office carrying a printed report.

"We found the login.""

I stood.

"Where?""

"An external network. The login originated from a private office suite in Buckhead.""

"Whose office?""

She placed the report on my desk.

"Whitmore Strategic Events.""

I looked at the IP address.

"Vanessa's office?""

"Yes.""

I read the timestamp.

9:02 a.m.

She had been in the building with us when the transfer was authorized.

I looked up.

"Did she leave the conference room?""

"Security footage shows her entering the hallway at 9:01. She was gone for approximately six minutes.""

I stared at the report.

"Who was she speaking to?""

"That's what we're checking.""

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Marcus Reed.""

A woman introduced herself as Special Agent Laura Bennett with a federal financial crimes task force.

"Mr. Reed, we've received preliminary information about the transfer.""

"Yes.""

"Is your company preserving all related records?""

"Absolutely.""

"We'd like to arrange an interview with you and your finance team.""

"Understood.""

She paused.

"There's one additional concern. The receiving account is connected to an entity already under investigation.""

My expression tightened.

"What entity?""

"Northstar Capital Holdings.""

I knew the name.

Northstar was a private investment company that had approached us eighteen months earlier about acquiring a portfolio of commercial properties.

I'd rejected their offer.

Their ownership structure had been unusually complicated, and their representatives had refused to disclose the ultimate beneficial owners.

"How is it connected?""

"The account received funds from several companies associated with a larger financial investigation.""

I leaned forward.

"Are you saying my foundation's money has entered a criminal network?""

"I'm saying the transaction requires immediate attention.""

I looked at the window.

"Agent Bennett, I want that money recovered.""

"We'll do everything legally available.""

After the call, I sat silently.

Emily waited.

Then she spoke.

"Mr. Reed, there's something else you need to see.""

She opened a video file.

The security footage showed the hallway outside the foundation conference room.

Vanessa walked toward the elevator.

She looked left.

Then right.

She pulled a second phone from her handbag.

She made a call.

After forty seconds, she returned to the conference room.

Emily paused the video.

"Can you identify the person she called?""

I looked at the timestamp.

9:02.

Then I looked at the phone in Vanessa's hand.

It was a device I'd never seen her use.

"Find the number.""

Emily nodded.

"Already working on it.""

My office door opened.

Richard entered without knocking.

"Marcus, the foundation's board members are asking for an emergency meeting.""

"Tell them they'll get one.""

He placed a document on my desk.

"There's another problem.""

I looked down.

It was a resignation letter.

Daniel Whitmore had submitted it electronically at 10:51 a.m.

His final sentence read:

I regret that personal circumstances have made it impossible for me to continue serving the organization.

I looked at Richard.

"He resigned?""

"Yes.""

"Before the investigation even began?""

Richard nodded.

I read the letter again.

Then I noticed the attachment.

A separate document.

A confidential severance agreement requesting $2.4 million in compensation.

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the audacity was almost unbelievable.

"Did anyone approve this?""

"No.""

I placed the document down.

"Good.""

Richard looked at me.

"Marcus, I need to ask you something.""

"Go ahead.""

"Do you think Daniel and Vanessa planned this together?""

I looked at the security footage paused on my monitor.

Vanessa stood in the hallway with a second phone.

I thought about the copied signature.

The inflated property agreement.

The offshore transfer.

And the private company receiving the money.

"I think we need to establish exactly how far this goes.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

You need to stop the investigation. You don't understand who you're dealing with.

I stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

Ask your father what happened in 1998.

My fingers went still.

My father had died six years earlier.

And there was one thing Daniel couldn't possibly have known.

My father had never discussed 1998 with anyone outside our family.

I looked at Richard.

"Do you remember Northstar Capital Holdings?""

Richard's face changed.

He slowly pulled out a chair.

"Marcus...""

"What?""

He looked toward the closed office door.

"Your father spent two years trying to keep that company away from Reed Meridian.""

I leaned forward.

"Why?""

Richard lowered his voice.

"Because the man who founded Northstar once tried to take everything your father owned.""

May you like

Then he added something that made my blood run cold.

"And I think Vanessa has been working with his son for longer than you realize.""
