Chapter 9: The Last Signature

By the time I reached Reed Meridian headquarters, security had already locked down the executive floor.

Richard Lawson was sitting in my office.

He had returned after three days of silence, wearing the same expensive gray suit he had worn at my father's funeral.

His hair was thinner now.

His face had aged.

But his expression remained perfectly composed.

When I entered, he stood.

"Marcus.""

"Richard.""

He extended his hand.

I ignored it.

"What are you doing in my office?""

He glanced toward Emily.

"Could we speak privately?""

"No.""

He slowly lowered his hand.

"Fine.""

I walked behind my desk.

"Start talking.""

Richard adjusted his cuffs.

"I understand there's been some confusion regarding the trust documents.""

"Confusion?""

"Yes. The amendment filed in 2021 was legitimate. I was acting in the company's best interests.""

I placed a copy of the document on the desk.

"Then explain why it was notarized using the stamp of someone who died two years earlier.""

His expression didn't change.

"Administrative error.""

"Why was $750,000 transferred to your personal account four days before the amendment was filed?""

"Consulting compensation.""

"For what?""

"Legal services.""

"Provided to whom?""

He paused.

"Whitmore Holdings.""

I smiled faintly.

"At least we're making progress.""

Richard sat down without being invited.

"Marcus, your father understood how business worked. He knew difficult decisions sometimes had to be made.""

"My father trusted you.""

"And I respected him.""

"Then why did you help Charles take control of his company?""

Richard's face hardened.

"Your father was a stubborn man.""

"He built the company.""

"He nearly destroyed it.""

I leaned forward.

"Was that why you changed the ownership documents?""

Richard sighed.

"Your father refused every reasonable offer. Charles was willing to save the business, protect the employees, and preserve its future.""

"By taking it away from my family?""

"By ensuring it survived.""

I stared at him.

"And Vanessa?""

He looked up.

"What about her?""

"Did you introduce her to Daniel?""

Richard said nothing.

"Did you tell her my mother was alive?""

His eyes shifted.

That was enough.

I stood.

"You did.""

Richard exhaled.

"Vanessa was useful.""

The words came out casually.

As if he were discussing an office chair.

"Useful?""

"She had access to you. She understood your weaknesses. And after the divorce, she had no reason to protect you.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"She was my wife.""

"Exactly.""

I walked toward the window.

"Did you know she was throwing money at me this morning?""

Richard laughed softly.

"Yes.""

I turned.

"You knew?""

"She sent me a video.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Richard continued.

"She thought it would be amusing.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed you'd finally understand your place.""

I walked back toward him.

"Did Charles instruct her to do that?""

Richard smiled.

"Charles didn't care about your morning humiliation. Vanessa did that on her own.""

"Then why?""

"She wanted Daniel to believe she was loyal. She wanted Charles to believe she was useful. And she wanted you to feel small.""

I stared at him.

"She succeeded in neither.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

I returned to my chair.

"Now let's discuss my father.""

His expression changed.

"What about him?""

"What happened on March 17, 2017?""

Richard leaned back.

"Your father died of a heart condition.""

"That's what the official report says.""

"Because it's true.""

"Then why did you tell my mother to disappear?""

Richard's face went still.

I placed the photograph of him and Catherine on the desk.

He stared at it.

Then he looked up.

"Where did you find her?""

"She's alive.""

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely frightened.

He stood abruptly.

"That's impossible.""

"Apparently, it isn't.""

He walked toward the door.

Security officers moved into his path.

Richard turned.

"Marcus, listen to me.""

"No. You've had fourteen years to explain yourself.""

"I was trying to protect the company.""

"From whom?""

He hesitated.

"From Charles.""

I almost laughed.

"You're blaming Charles now?""

"He was dangerous.""

"And you were working with him.""

"Not anymore.""

I looked at him.

"Then tell me the truth.""

Richard's shoulders dropped.

"Your father discovered the original acquisition scheme. He found evidence that Charles had been using private accounts to finance the takeover.""

"Who helped him?""

"Your mother.""

"Why?""

"She discovered the money was being transferred through accounts connected to her. She was terrified. She wanted to expose everything.""

I leaned forward.

"Then what happened?""

Richard looked at the floor.

"Charles threatened to destroy her.""

"So my father arranged her disappearance.""

"Yes.""

"And the night he died?""

Richard swallowed.

"He received a call from Catherine. She said she had recovered the original ownership documents.""

"Where were they?""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

"Did Charles have anything to do with my father's death?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"I don't know who administered the medication.""

The room became completely silent.

I stared at him.

"You knew about the medication?""

Richard opened his eyes.

"I knew your father had been receiving medication for a heart condition.""

"Who handled it?""

"I don't know.""

"Who had access to his home?""

He looked toward the door.

Then he whispered:

"Vanessa.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

"She visited your father the afternoon before he died.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"Why?""

"She said she was delivering some documents.""

"Why would Vanessa visit my father?""

"She told him you were considering selling the company.""

I stared at Richard.

"That was a lie.""

"Your father knew.""

"Then why did he let her in?""

"Because she was still your wife.""

I sat down slowly.

For a moment, every memory seemed to collide.

Vanessa's divorce.

Her marriage to Daniel.

The stolen financial documents.

The ownership amendment.

My father's death.

And the five hundred dollars scattered across the pavement.

"Did Vanessa have access to his medication?"" I asked.

Richard looked away.

"I can't answer that.""

"You just did.""

He remained silent.

I reached for my phone.

"Emily, contact the police. Tell them we have new information related to my father's death.""

Richard's expression changed.

"Marcus, don't.""

I looked at him.

"Why not?""

"Because if you open that safe deposit box, you'll destroy everything.""

I held up the small key my mother had given me.

Richard's face went pale.

"Where did you get that?""

"From my mother.""

He took one step backward.

"She gave it to you?""

"Yes.""

Richard looked toward security.

Then he made a decision.

He lunged toward my desk.

One of the guards grabbed his arm.

A folder fell from Richard's jacket.

Documents scattered across the carpet.

Emily rushed forward.

"Don't move!""

Richard struggled.

"You're making a mistake!""

I bent down and picked up the folder.

The first document was a bank statement.

The second was a transfer authorization.

The third was a medical invoice dated March 16, 2017.

It listed a prescription that my father had never taken.

The patient's name was Thomas Reed.

The physician's signature belonged to a doctor who had retired before the invoice date.

But it was the final document that made my hands shake.

A handwritten note.

Medication delivered. Payment received.

At the bottom was a signature.

Vanessa Reed.

I stared at it.

Then I looked at Richard.

"She signed this?""

He said nothing.

"Did Vanessa administer the medication?""

Richard's face twisted.

"I don't know.""

I grabbed the folder.

"You're going to tell the police everything.""

He began shouting.

"Charles ordered the arrangement! Vanessa was only following instructions!""

The room froze.

I looked at him.

"What arrangement?""

Richard realized what he'd said.

He stopped struggling.

But it was too late.

I stepped closer.

"Richard. What arrangement?""

He stared at the floor.

Then he whispered:

"Your father's death wasn't supposed to happen that night.""

My chest tightened.

"Explain.""

"Charles wanted your father removed from the negotiations. He wanted him declared medically unfit to manage the company.""

"How?""

"By making his condition worse. The medication was supposed to cause confusion and temporary incapacitation.""

I stared at him.

"But he died.""

Richard nodded.

"Something went wrong.""

"Who gave him the medication?""

He looked up.

"Vanessa.""

The words echoed through the room.

I felt as though someone had punched me.

Emily covered her mouth.

Security officers exchanged glances.

Then Richard said something even worse.

"She didn't know the dose was dangerous.""

I looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because Charles told me.""

I took a slow breath.

"Where is Charles now?""

Richard swallowed.

"He's leaving Atlanta.""

"When?""

"Tonight.""

I turned toward Emily.

"Find out where he's going.""

She immediately stepped outside.

Then Richard laughed.

It was a bitter, exhausted sound.

"You think you've won, Marcus?""

I looked at him.

"You're under investigation. Your fraudulent documents are in our possession. And you've just admitted to participating in a scheme connected to my father's death.""

Richard shook his head.

"You still don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

He looked directly at me.

"Charles doesn't need the company anymore.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"The money was never the real prize.""

He leaned forward as security held him.

"Your father hid something else in that safe deposit box. Something Charles has spent fourteen years trying to recover.""

I felt my grip tighten around the key.

"What?""

Richard smiled weakly.

"The names of everyone who financed the original takeover.""

"Why does that matter?""

"Because one of those names belongs to a federal judge. Another belongs to a senator. And the third belongs to the man who currently controls the bank holding your company's largest credit facility.""

I stared at him.

Then my phone vibrated.

Emily had sent a message.

Marcus, Charles has left his headquarters. His private jet is scheduled to depart at 8:30 p.m.

A second message appeared.

Vanessa is with him.

I looked at the clock.

6:14 p.m.

Then I looked at the key in my hand.

My father's final message was waiting inside that bank.

And for the first time, I understood why Charles was willing to destroy an entire family to get it.

I turned toward the door.

"Get the car.""

Emily appeared.

"Where are we going?""

I looked at her.

"First National Bank.""

Then I glanced back at Richard.

"And after that, we're going to stop a plane.""

But as I reached the elevator, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in years.

*Catherine Reed.*

I answered.

"Mom?""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Marcus, listen to me carefully.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa just called.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

My mother began crying.

"She knows you have the key.""

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"She's coming for you.""
