Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Buried
I stared at the handwritten note until the words began to blur.
Marcus must never see the original.
My father's signature sat directly above it.
Richard Lawson's signature was underneath.
And suddenly, fourteen years of memories felt different.
Richard had been there when my father taught me how to read construction contracts. He had helped us negotiate our first commercial development agreement. He had even delivered the eulogy at my father's funeral.
I'd trusted him with everything.
Apparently, that had been a mistake.
"Robert, I want every document from 2016 connected to the original Meridian project.""
Robert Hayes closed his laptop.
"That's a substantial amount of paperwork. Some of those records are probably in off-site storage.""
"Then get them.""
"Marcus, can I ask something?""
"Go ahead.""
"Why are you so certain this has something to do with your father?""
I held up the printed email.
"Because Vanessa mentioned him. And because somebody specifically instructed Richard to keep this document away from me.""
Robert examined the handwriting.
"That could be a private notation.""
"Or it could be the reason we're looking at thirty-two million dollars in suspicious transactions.""
He nodded slowly.
"I'll contact records management.""
"Not yet.""
He looked confused.
I pointed toward the document.
"If Richard is involved, I don't want him knowing we're searching for the original agreement. Find the records quietly.""
Robert picked up his phone.
"I'll handle it.""
Within twenty minutes, Emily returned with an update.
"Daniel's company devices have been collected. Legal has frozen his access, and security is reviewing the building access logs.""
"Good. What about Richard?""
"He's not answering his office phone.""
I looked at her.
"Where is he?""
"His assistant says he left around eleven.""
"Without notifying anyone?""
"Apparently.""
I checked my watch.
It was 11:37 a.m.
"Find out where he went.""
Emily nodded.
Then she hesitated.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
"What now?""
"Vanessa has been calling the reception desk.""
"How many times?""
"Seven.""
I almost smiled.
"She must be having a difficult morning.""
"She's demanding to speak with you.""
"Tell her to contact legal.""
"She said she'll come here personally if you don't answer.""
"Then make sure security knows she's not authorized beyond the lobby.""
Emily typed something into her tablet.
"Understood.""
I returned to my office and shut the door.
For the first time that day, I allowed myself to sit.
My father's photograph stood on the bookshelf behind my desk.
He was wearing an old construction helmet, smiling beside a half-finished building. His hands were dirty, his shirt was wrinkled, and he looked happier than most men I'd ever known.
I picked up the frame.
"All these years," I whispered.
I remembered his final months.
He had become unusually protective of certain documents. He'd started meeting Richard privately. Sometimes he'd take phone calls outside, even when it was raining.
I'd assumed it was business.
I had been twenty-nine, newly married, and convinced that my father was simply preparing me to take over the company.
One evening, shortly before he died, he had called me into his study.
"Marcus, there's something about this business you need to understand.""
"What is it, Dad?""
"Not everyone who helps you build something wants to see you own it.""
I'd laughed.
"You're talking about investors?""
He'd looked at me for a long moment.
"I'm talking about people who smile while they're counting what they can take.""
I remembered asking him whether something was wrong.
He'd shaken his head.
"Not anymore. I've handled it.""
Then he made me promise something.
"Whatever happens, don't sign away the company just because somebody tells you it's the only way to save it.""
I had promised.
At the time, I didn't understand.
Now I wondered whether he had been trying to warn me.
A knock interrupted my thoughts.
Emily opened the door.
"Marcus, security has someone downstairs.""
"Vanessa?""
She nodded.
"She says she has an appointment.""
"She doesn't.""
"I know. But she also says she's carrying documents related to the company.""
I stood.
"What documents?""
"She wouldn't tell reception.""
I looked toward the window.
"Bring her to the small conference room. Keep security nearby.""
Emily hesitated.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
Ten minutes later, Vanessa entered the room.
Her designer coat was still immaculate, but her sunglasses were gone. Her expression had lost its earlier confidence.
She placed a leather folder on the table.
"Marcus.""
"Vanessa.""
She looked around the room.
"Very impressive.""
"Why are you here?""
"To prevent you from making a terrible mistake.""
I remained standing.
"Which mistake?""
"Destroying Daniel's career over a misunderstanding.""
"Your husband admitted receiving two hundred and fifty thousand dollars connected to a company that was sharing confidential information.""
Her jaw tightened.
"That money was an investment.""
"Into what?""
"A legitimate business.""
"Performing what legitimate services?""
She opened her folder and pulled out a contract.
"Whitmore Strategic Consulting. We provided market research and acquisition analysis.""
I glanced at the document.
The contract was dated eleven months earlier.
The client was Reed Meridian Development.
My signature appeared on the last page.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
"I never signed this.""
She blinked.
"Excuse me?""
"I never approved this agreement.""
She pushed the paper toward me.
"It's right there.""
I examined the signature.
It looked remarkably similar to mine.
But the final letter in my surname had a small upward stroke.
My actual signature ended with a downward line.
Someone had copied it.
"Where did you get this?""
"Daniel provided it.""
"Daniel had no authority to approve a contract on my behalf.""
"He was the regional vice president.""
"He wasn't the chief executive.""
She folded her arms.
"You're making this personal.""
"It became personal when someone forged my signature.""
Her expression changed.
For a brief second, I saw genuine fear.
Then she recovered.
"You're accusing me of forgery?""
"I'm asking you where you got this document.""
She grabbed the contract.
"Forget it.""
I stepped back.
"Leave the document.""
"No.""
"Vanessa.""
She shoved it into her folder.
"You know what your problem is? You always think you're the smartest person in the room.""
I looked at her.
"And you always think the most expensive handbag makes you the most important person in it.""
Her face reddened.
"Daniel is going to be fine. We have powerful people supporting us.""
"Then why are you so worried about an investigation?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she picked up her handbag.
At the door, she stopped.
"There's something you should know, Marcus.""
I waited.
"Your father wasn't the innocent businessman you think he was.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"What does that mean?""
She turned.
"Ask Richard what happened to the original ownership agreement.""
"Where is it?""
A strange smile crossed her face.
"Maybe your father left it somewhere you'd never think to look.""
Then she walked out.
I stood in silence.
Emily entered seconds later.
"Did she give you the documents?""
"No. She took them.""
"What happened?""
I looked at the empty doorway.
"She just confirmed that the original agreement exists.""
Emily closed the door.
"Marcus, I have an update.""
"What?""
"Richard's vehicle was recorded leaving the parking garage at 10:58. His office computer was shut down manually.""
"Can security locate him?""
"We're trying.""
She looked at her tablet.
"There's also a call from a number associated with Whitmore Holdings. It came in shortly before he left.""
I looked at her.
"Who called?""
Emily turned the screen toward me.
The number belonged to Vanessa's investment company.
And beneath it was a second notification.
A message from our records department.
Mr. Reed, we located a sealed storage box from 2016. It was registered under your father's personal name.
I read the message twice.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Where is the box?""
Emily swallowed.
"Your father's old warehouse.""
I grabbed my jacket.
"Get the car.""
May you like
Because whatever my father had hidden, I was finally going to find it.
And I had a feeling Vanessa knew exactly what was inside.
