Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Birth Records

Marcus stared at the medical report.

The words on the page seemed impossible.

*Patient was not born from Vanessa Reed’s original pregnancy record.*

He read it again.

Then again.

But the sentence refused to change.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

Not Ava.

Not even Nia, who stood quietly near the bed, watching the adults panic around her.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

Her face had gone pale.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Lie.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

But Marcus didn’t back down.

“Not anymore.””

She looked at the floor.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

A long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I know Nia’s birth was complicated.””

Marcus held up the report.

“This says something else.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Marcus handed it to him.

Daniel read the page carefully.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“You know?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the document.

“But this isn’t a paternity report.””

“Then what is it?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“It’s a hospital transfer record.””

Marcus frowned.

“A transfer record?””

Daniel nodded.

“Meaning Nia may not have been delivered at the hospital listed on her birth certificate.””

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Where was she born?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Vanessa.””

She sat down.

“I need you to understand something.””

Marcus remained standing.

“I have spent fifteen years trying to understand things nobody would tell me.””

His voice softened slightly.

“I’m done waiting.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Nia was born at Saint Catherine’s.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s not what her records say.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because something happened.””

“What?””

She looked at him.

“The hospital made a mistake.””

Marcus stared.

“What kind of mistake?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“The delivery became dangerous.””

Her voice became quieter.

“The doctor thought Nia wasn’t getting enough oxygen.””

Marcus remembered the night.

The panic.

The nurses running.

The doctor’s serious expression.

But nobody had told him how close they came.

“They rushed her to another room.””

Vanessa continued.

“While they were treating her, there was a problem with the paperwork.””

Daniel looked at the report again.

“What problem?””

Vanessa looked away.

“They mixed up records.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“The hospital had another emergency that night.””

She swallowed.

“Another baby.””

The words landed slowly.

Marcus looked down at the report.

Another baby.

Another record.

Another secret.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped back.

“Are you saying they switched babies?””

Nobody spoke.

And that silence was terrifying.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then what?””

“The babies were never switched.””

He stared.

“Then why does the report say Nia wasn’t born from your original record?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because the original record wasn’t Nia’s.””

Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

Then at Marcus.

“When Nia was born, the hospital created two files.””

“Why?””

“Because they weren’t sure which information belonged to which child.””

Marcus felt sick.

“So they guessed?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Your father fixed it.””

There it was again.

His father.

Always his father.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“What did he fix?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“He changed the records so Nia’s file would match the child you brought home.””

Marcus opened his eyes.

“Brought home?””

The phrase bothered him.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Say it clearly.””

She looked at him.

“The night Nia was born, you almost lost her.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t.””

The room went still.

“You thought she was in danger because of complications during delivery.””

She wiped her face.

“But the truth is…”

Her voice disappeared.

Marcus waited.

“The truth is Nia was born with a medical condition.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“What condition?””

Vanessa looked down.

“The doctors weren’t sure she would survive.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“But she did.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide this?””

Vanessa looked toward the report.

“Because your father thought the truth would destroy you.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around.

“And somehow everyone destroying my life was supposed to save me.””

Nobody argued.

Because nobody could.

Marcus walked to the window.

For years, he had believed his father was the strongest man he knew.

Now he saw something else.

A scared man.

A man who made decisions because he couldn’t handle watching his son suffer.

And somehow, those decisions caused the exact pain he wanted to prevent.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Adrian knows more.””

Marcus turned.

“You talked to him?””

Daniel nodded.

“He sent another message.””

He pulled out his phone.

The message was short.

*Tell Marcus the full truth. I owe him that much.*

Marcus looked at him.

“Call him.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

The call connected.

After several rings, a man answered.

“Daniel?””

“No.””

Marcus spoke.

“Adrian.””

Silence.

Then:

“Marcus.””

His voice was older than Marcus expected.

Tired.

“You found the records.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“I don’t want apologies.””

“I know.””

“I want answers.””

Another pause.

“Okay.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then at the report.

“What happened the night my daughter was born?””

Adrian was silent for several seconds.

Then he said:

“Nia was born with a heart condition.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“She almost died.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your father made a decision.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“What decision?””

“He believed you would never recover if you lost her.””

Marcus frowned.

“Lost her?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Because there was another baby involved.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus gripped the phone tighter.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“During the emergency, doctors discovered something unusual.””

“What?””

“The second baby.””

Marcus felt the room disappear.

“What second baby?””

Adrian took a breath.

“The other child in the emergency room.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“Adrian…”

The doctor continued.

“Your father discovered that the hospital had made a serious error.””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“What error?””

“The original birth records weren’t matching.””

A pause.

“And your father learned something that changed everything.””

Marcus felt his heartbeat pounding.

“What?””

Adrian answered:

“The baby listed under Vanessa’s original record…”

He stopped.

Marcus waited.

Then:

“Was not Nia.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked toward the hallway.

Toward his daughter.

His little girl.

The child he had loved every day of his life.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“I’m saying the hospital records were changed because your father discovered the truth.””

Marcus swallowed.

“What truth?””

The answer came slowly.

“Nia was never the problem.””

A pause.

“The problem was the other baby.””

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“What other baby?””

Adrian said:

“The baby who was supposed to go home with another family.””

Silence.

Then Adrian added:

“And the baby who was connected to Vanessa’s secret.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

Not denying.

Not defending.

Just crying.

Because she knew.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“Who was the other baby?””

Her lips trembled.

And when she finally spoke, the truth was worse than anything Marcus imagined.

“Marcus…”

May you like

She whispered:

“The other baby was mine too.””
