Chapter 6: The Evidence in the Attic

Marcus did not remember walking upstairs.

One second he was standing in the living room, staring at Daniel Carter like he was looking at a stranger.

The next, he was standing in the hallway outside the bedroom that used to belong to his father.

The bedroom that had remained untouched since the funeral.

His father’s old leather chair was still in the corner.

The faded books were still stacked on the shelf.

The wooden clock on the wall still ticked every hour, even though nobody had bothered to repair it after it started losing five minutes a day.

Marcus had always found comfort in this room.

Tonight, it felt like a crime scene.

Behind him, Vanessa stood quietly.

She looked smaller than she had ever looked before.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

Just exhausted.

“You knew,” Marcus said.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus walked to the old wooden desk.

“You knew my father was involved.””

“I knew he knew something.””

He turned.

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“It isn’t.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked at the photographs on the wall.

At Marcus as a child.

At his father smiling beside him.

“I met your father two weeks after I found out I was pregnant.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I was desperate.””

“You went to him instead of me.””

“I was afraid.””

Marcus looked away.

He hated that word now.

Afraid.

Everyone had been afraid.

Everyone had been scared.

And somehow, he was the only person who never got the chance to decide what happened next.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa walked slowly into the room.

“He asked me if Daniel knew.””

Marcus turned back.

“What did you tell him?””

“That Daniel knew.””

“And me?””

She lowered her eyes.

“I told him I didn’t know how to tell you.””

Marcus laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“You were about to marry me.””

“I loved you.””

“You loved me enough to lie.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

Those two words surprised him.

No excuse.

No defense.

Just an admission.

Marcus stared at her.

“Keep going.””

She nodded.

“Your father asked me one question.””

“What question?””

She looked at him.

“He asked me if I wanted Daniel to be part of Nia’s life.””

Marcus frowned.

“That’s not his decision.””

“I know.””

“What did you say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I said I didn’t know.””

“And?””

“He told me if Daniel wanted to be a father, he would have to prove it.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“By taking a test?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t that happen?””

“Because your father contacted him.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the attic door.

“The night before I was supposed to tell you, Daniel disappeared.””

Marcus stared.

“You’re saying my father scared him away?””

“I don’t know exactly what happened.””

“You know enough.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I know Daniel received money.””

Marcus stopped.

“Money?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

She looked at him.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

Marcus felt something heavy settle in his chest.

His father.

The man who taught him honesty.

The man who told him family meant protecting the people you loved.

Had protected him by destroying his right to choose.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because he thought he was protecting you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“No, he wasn’t.””

He walked toward the window.

“He was controlling my life.””

Vanessa didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

A sound came from the doorway.

Daniel.

He stood there holding the envelope.

“I found out later.””

Marcus turned.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“Years later.””

“When?””

“After your father died.””

Marcus stared.

“And you waited?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I tried to find Vanessa.””

“And?””

“She changed her number.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought it was over.””

Daniel continued.

“I thought maybe she chose Marcus. Maybe she wanted a new life.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And you just walked away?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Marcus saw something complicated in Daniel.

Not just guilt.

Regret.

A person who knew he had made mistakes and couldn’t undo them.

But Marcus wasn’t ready to forgive anyone.

Not yet.

“Where is the evidence?””

Daniel held up the envelope.

“What?””

“The evidence.””

Marcus pointed around the room.

“My father kept records of everything.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“How do you know?””

“Because that was who he was.””

Marcus opened a drawer in the desk.

Empty.

Another.

Old papers.

Tax documents.

Receipts.

Nothing.

Daniel watched.

“Your father didn’t trust people.””

Marcus looked at him.

“No.””

“He trusted paperwork.””

Marcus stopped.

Because that was true.

His father had documented everything.

Birth certificates.

Insurance policies.

Property records.

Even family arguments.

He used to joke that his father could turn a conversation into a legal file.

Marcus opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was an old brass key.

He stared at it.

He remembered that key.

His father had kept it on a chain.

“The attic.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“He had a box upstairs.””

Marcus walked toward the attic door.

“You knew about this?””

Vanessa followed.

“No.””

Marcus looked back.

“Then why are you scared?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she was.

They climbed the narrow wooden stairs.

The attic smelled like dust and old paper.

Moonlight entered through the small window.

Marcus turned on the light.

Boxes filled the space.

His father had labeled everything.

Christmas Decorations.

Medical Records.

Family Documents.

Marcus moved deeper.

Then he saw it.

A box with no label.

That alone felt wrong.

His father labeled everything.

Everything.

Marcus knelt.

He opened the box.

Inside were three things.

An old photograph.

A folded letter.

And a small envelope.

Marcus picked up the photograph first.

His hand froze.

It was Vanessa.

Young.

Pregnant.

Standing beside his father.

Not at the hospital.

Not after Nia was born.

Before.

The date on the back made his stomach turn.

Two weeks before Marcus and Vanessa’s wedding.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know he had that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You were with him.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I mean I didn’t know he took a picture.””

Marcus turned the photo over.

There was writing.

His father’s handwriting.

Marcus recognized it instantly.

*She deserves to know the truth. But Marcus deserves the chance to choose.*

His hands began shaking.

He opened the letter.

The first line was enough.

*Marcus, if you are reading this, then I failed to tell you myself.*

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus kept reading.

*I made a decision that was not mine to make. I thought I was protecting my son, but I realize now that I was protecting myself from watching him hurt.*

Marcus swallowed.

The next sentence made him stop.

*Daniel Carter is not Nia’s biological father.*

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked up.

Daniel stared.

Marcus kept reading.

*But neither am I certain Marcus is.*

The words blurred.

For a moment, he couldn’t understand them.

Couldn’t accept them.

Couldn’t breathe.

Then he saw the final line on the page.

A line that explained why his father had hidden everything.

*The man who knows the truth is the only person Vanessa has been protecting from Marcus.*

Marcus slowly lowered the letter.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

Her face was full of fear.

Not because the secret was discovered.

Because the secret was finally about to be spoken.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa started crying.

And from downstairs, Nia’s voice called out.

“Daddy?””

Everyone turned.

The little girl stood at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked up at them.

And in her hand was an old photograph she had found on the floor.

A photograph that had fallen out of the box.

She held it toward Marcus.

“Why is Grandma holding me in this picture…”

Her voice shook.

“…with a man I’ve never met?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

Then at Vanessa.

Because the man standing beside Evelyn and baby Nia was not Daniel.

It wasn’t Marcus’s father.

It wasn’t anyone he recognized.

And on the back of the picture was a name.

A name Marcus had never heard before.

A name that made Vanessa whisper:

“Oh no.””

May you like

Because the person in the photograph was still alive.

And he was the only person who knew the truth about Nia’s birth.
