Chapter 6: The Hidden Protection

The bank conference room was colder than I expected.

I sat beside Dad, staring at the folder placed in front of us. The walls were covered with framed certificates and photographs of people smiling after solving financial problems.

But nobody in our room was smiling.

Across the table sat a bank representative named Mr. Anderson. He adjusted his glasses and looked between Dad and me.

“Before we continue,” he said carefully, “I need to confirm something.””

Dad nodded.

“Go ahead.””

Mr. Anderson looked at me.

“Jasmine Carter, are you aware that your mother established a protected trust account in your name?””

I swallowed.

“No. I only found out a few days ago.””

He opened the folder.

“Your mother created this account shortly before she passed away.””

I looked down.

My fingers tightened around the edge of my chair.

“She knew she was sick,” Dad whispered.

Mr. Anderson nodded.

“She wanted to make sure Jasmine had financial security when she became an adult.””

Dad looked emotional.

“She never told me.””

“She specifically requested that certain information remain sealed until Jasmine turned nineteen.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Mr. Anderson paused.

“Because she was concerned someone might try to access the money before you were ready.””

The room went silent.

Dad looked at me.

My mother had predicted this.

Not Jessica specifically.

But the possibility that someone could put their own needs before mine.

Mr. Anderson continued.

“The trust contained several protections.””

He opened another document.

“The first protection required Jasmine’s personal approval before any withdrawal.””

I blinked.

“So Jessica couldn’t take it?””

“Not legally.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Then how did she get money?””

Mr. Anderson looked uncomfortable.

“That is the second issue.””

He turned another page.

“Someone attempted to transfer funds using Jasmine’s information.””

My stomach tightened.

“Jessica?””

“We are still investigating.””

Dad’s jaw clenched.

“But she admitted she knew about the account.””

“Yes.””

Mr. Anderson folded his hands.

“However, the most important part is this.””

He pointed to a paragraph.

“Your mother added a condition.””

I looked at the paper.

“What condition?””

Mr. Anderson looked at me.

“If anyone attempted to access this account using deception, the bank would immediately freeze all activity and begin a review.””

Dad exhaled slowly.

“She protected her.””

“Yes.””

I stared at my mother’s signature at the bottom of the page.

Even after all these years, she was still protecting me.

I felt tears forming.

“She knew.””

Dad looked at me.

“What?””

“She knew I might need her.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Mr. Anderson cleared his throat.

“There is one more thing.””

Dad looked up.

“What?””

“The trust contains a personal message.””

My heart stopped.

“A message?””

He nodded.

“Your mother requested that it be delivered only after the account protection was triggered.””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Jasmine.

I touched the paper.

It felt impossible.

Like holding a piece of someone who had been gone for almost a decade.

“Would you like to read it here?”” Mr. Anderson asked.

I nodded.

Slowly, I opened it.

The handwriting immediately brought tears to my eyes.

“My sweet Jasmine,

If you are reading this, then life has probably become more complicated than I hoped it would.””

I smiled sadly.

That sounded exactly like her.

“I know you. You have always tried to make everyone happy. You apologize when someone else hurts you. You give more than you receive.””

I looked away.

Because she was right.

“I want you to remember something. Love does not mean allowing people to use your kindness.””

My throat tightened.

“Family is not proven by blood alone. It is proven by the people who protect your heart when they have the chance to break it.””

I looked at Dad.

His eyes were wet.

The letter continued.

“Choose people who celebrate your dreams. Choose people who stand beside you, not people who stand on top of you.””

I took a shaky breath.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

“And Jasmine, if someone ever makes you feel like you are a burden, remember this: you were my greatest blessing.””

I couldn’t continue.

I covered my face.

Dad placed his hand on my shoulder.

Mr. Anderson quietly left the room to give us privacy.

When we returned home, everything felt different.

The house looked the same.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But I didn’t feel like I was walking through a place where I didn’t belong anymore.

That evening, Dad sat with me on the porch.

“You know something?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your mother would be proud of you.””

I smiled faintly.

“I don’t feel very strong.””

He shook his head.

“Strong people don’t always feel strong.””

We sat quietly.

Then his phone rang.

Dad looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?””

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his face became serious.

“Wait. What do you mean she already filed?””

My heart dropped.

“Who?””

Dad ended the call slowly.

He looked at me.

“Jessica.””

“What about her?””

“She filed a claim.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

Dad stared at the phone.

“She’s saying the money in your trust belongs to the family.””

I felt cold.

“The family?””

Dad nodded.

“And she’s claiming your mother wanted Tyler protected too.””

I stared into the darkness.

May you like

Jessica wasn’t giving up.

And now she was trying to take the one thing my mother left behind.
