Chapter 8: The Secret Marcus Had Kept for Ten Years
Marcus didn't speak during the drive home.
He sat behind the steering wheel, staring at the road while Denise held his hand.
Kendra sat in the back seat.
She had never seen him like this.
Not when she broke her arm.
Not when he lost his job for two months.
Not even when his father died.
Marcus had always been the steady one.
The person who knew what to do.
But now, his phone sat face down in the cup holder, and the message from Anthony seemed to have taken something out of him.
When they arrived home, Denise locked the front door.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
Kendra followed them into the living room.
"What's the secret?""
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
"The house. What happened ten years ago?""
He lowered himself onto the sofa.
Denise sat beside him.
For several seconds, he stared at the floor.
Then he began.
"Before your mother and I got married, I owned a small construction business with Anthony.""
Kendra sat opposite them.
"I didn't know that.""
"It was a family business. We did renovations, roofing, and commercial maintenance.""
Denise nodded.
"Your uncle handled the accounts.""
Marcus continued.
"At first, things were good. We had several contracts. We made enough money to support ourselves.""
"What happened?""
"Anthony started borrowing from the business account.""
"Why?""
"He said he needed money for equipment. Then he said he needed money to pay subcontractors.""
Marcus paused.
"Eventually, I discovered that he had been using company funds to cover personal debts.""
Kendra frowned.
"Did he steal?""
Marcus looked at Denise.
She nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus continued.
"By the time I discovered it, the business was already in serious trouble. We had unpaid invoices, overdue taxes, and a bank loan that was about to default.""
Kendra looked at him.
"What did you do?""
"I sold the house.""
Her mouth fell open.
"You sold this house?""
"No. The house I owned before marrying your mother.""
Marcus explained that he had used the proceeds to pay the business debts and protect several employees from losing their wages.
He had also taken responsibility for a loan Anthony had guaranteed.
"Your uncle disappeared for almost six months," Marcus said.
"I was left dealing with the bank.""
Kendra shook her head.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
"Because I thought I could handle it.""
Denise touched his arm.
"He nearly lost everything.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Not everything.""
She gave him a sad smile.
"No. Not everything.""
Kendra understood.
He had met Denise shortly afterward.
And a year later, he had become the person who raised her.
"Did Anthony ever pay you back?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
"Then why are you still speaking to him?""
Marcus looked toward the window.
"Because he's my brother.""
Kendra lowered her eyes.
She thought about the way she had defended Darius.
How she had ignored every warning because she wanted a relationship with him.
Now she wondered whether Marcus had done something similar with Anthony.
Sometimes loving someone made it difficult to see what they were doing to you.
"Is that what Darius meant?"" she asked.
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
"When he said he'd tell everyone what happened to the house.""
Marcus nodded.
"He knows the story.""
"Why?""
"Anthony told him.""
Kendra frowned.
"But what does he have to gain from telling people?""
Marcus sighed.
"People don't always need a reason to hurt someone. Sometimes they just need something they can use.""
His phone rang.
Anthony.
Marcus looked at the screen.
Denise shook her head.
"Don't answer.""
But Marcus picked up.
"Yes?""
Anthony's voice sounded frantic.
"Bro, please. We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"About Darius.""
"What about him?""
"He's going too far.""
Marcus laughed without humor.
"You helped him.""
"I know.""
"You gave him our financial information.""
"I know.""
"You helped him put our house on a loan application.""
Anthony went silent.
Marcus leaned forward.
"Did you witness those signatures?""
"I thought the paperwork was legitimate.""
"Did you see Denise and me sign?""
Anthony didn't answer.
"Anthony?""
Finally, his brother whispered.
"No.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Then why did you sign as a witness?""
Anthony began speaking quickly.
"Darius said it was just preliminary paperwork. He told me nobody was going to use it until everything was verified.""
"You signed a document saying you watched us agree to something we never agreed to.""
"I was trying to help.""
"You were trying to get paid.""
Anthony went quiet.
Then he said something unexpected.
"Darius has been recording conversations.""
Marcus straightened.
"What conversations?""
"Between him and Kendra.""
Kendra stood.
"What?""
Anthony heard her.
"Is Kendra there?""
Marcus looked at his daughter.
"Yes.""
Anthony's voice softened.
"Listen, sweetheart. I'm sorry.""
Kendra stepped closer.
"What recordings?""
"I don't know how many.""
"What does he want with them?""
"He told me he needed proof that you authorized him to handle your financial affairs.""
Kendra's face went white.
"But I never authorized him to use the education fund.""
"I know.""
"Then what did he record?""
Anthony hesitated.
"Your phone calls. Some messages. Maybe conversations at his apartment.""
Kendra remembered the morning Darius had asked her to sign the documents.
She remembered him saying he was trying to help.
She remembered telling him that she trusted him.
And she remembered one particular sentence.
I want you to handle everything, Dad. I don't know anything about college finances.
Her stomach dropped.
He could use that sentence.
Out of context.
To make it appear that she had given him permission.
Marcus took a slow breath.
"Anthony, listen carefully. If you have any documents or recordings, you need to preserve them.""
"I have something.""
"What?""
"A copy of the original agreement.""
Marcus frowned.
"Where?""
"In Darius's office.""
"How did you get it?""
"He asked me to scan it.""
"Did you make a copy?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Anthony's voice cracked.
"Because I knew something was wrong.""
Marcus looked at Denise.
"Send it to me.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because Darius has my phone.""
Marcus went still.
"What do you mean?""
"He took it last night.""
"Why?""
"Because he found out I spoke to you.""
Kendra covered her mouth.
Anthony continued.
"Marcus, I think he's planning to leave town.""
"When?""
"I don't know. But he told me he had to get the money before the bank started asking questions.""
Marcus stood.
"Where is he now?""
"At his office, I think.""
"Then go to the police.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Anthony whispered:
"Because I signed the documents, Marcus. If they investigate, I'm involved.""
Marcus looked at the ceiling.
"Anthony, you are already involved.""
Then the call ended.
That afternoon, Kendra went to her bedroom and opened her social media account.
The graduation photograph was still there.
Hundreds of likes.
Dozens of comments.
She stared at the image.
Darius stood beside her, his arm around her shoulders.
The caption still read:
Finally made my dad proud.
She had posted it less than forty-eight hours earlier.
Now it felt like a lie.
Her phone buzzed.
A private message from Olivia.
Hey, are you okay? I saw your graduation post. Is everything all right with Marcus?
Kendra typed.
No. Not really.
Olivia replied.
I don't want to interfere, but I saw something yesterday that I think you should know.
Kendra sat up.
What?
Olivia sent a screenshot.
It was a photograph taken at graduation.
Not the one Darius had posted.
This one showed the moments immediately before the photograph.
Marcus was standing beside Kendra, holding the little velvet box.
Darius was approaching from the left.
The picture captured Kendra's hands pushing Marcus out of the frame.
But the most painful part was Marcus's expression.
He wasn't angry.
He was smiling.
A small, hopeful smile.
As though he still believed Kendra might turn around and ask him to stay.
Kendra began crying.
Another message arrived.
My mom was standing nearby. She said Marcus had been telling people all morning how proud he was of you.
Kendra put the phone down.
She couldn't look at the picture anymore.
Then another notification appeared.
A message from Darius.
Princess, we need to talk. Come to my office tomorrow. There are things you don't understand.
Kendra stared at it.
She didn't reply.
Instead, she opened her contacts and called Angela Reed.
"Miss Reed?""
"Hello, Kendra. Is everything okay?""
"I need to ask you something.""
"Of course.""
"Can my father use recordings of our conversations to prove I authorized him to access my college account?""
Angela paused.
"Not automatically. We would need to review the exact content, the circumstances, and the relevant authorization requirements.""
Kendra exhaled.
"He recorded me.""
"Do you know that for certain?""
"My uncle told us.""
Angela became quiet.
"Then I recommend you preserve every message and avoid discussing financial matters with him privately.""
"Okay.""
"And Kendra?""
"Yes?""
"Your father has requested another meeting with the university.""
Kendra's stomach tightened.
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning.""
"What does he want?""
Angela hesitated.
"He claims he has new evidence proving that you authorized the financial arrangement.""
Kendra closed her eyes.
"What evidence?""
"He hasn't provided it yet.""
At 7:30 the following morning, Darius walked into Sterling Capital Partners carrying a black leather folder.
He looked exhausted.
His burgundy suit was wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot.
A woman named Evelyn Shaw was waiting in a private conference room.
She was the senior lending officer overseeing his application.
"Mr. Cole," she said.
"Please sit.""
Darius placed the folder on the table.
"I've brought the additional documentation.""
Evelyn opened it.
Inside were printed text messages, screenshots, and a short audio recording.
She examined the first page.
Then the second.
Finally, she played the recording.
Kendra's voice filled the room.
I want you to handle everything, Dad. I don't know anything about college finances.
Evelyn stopped the recording.
"Is this the beneficiary?""
"Yes.""
"Did she sign the authorization?""
"Yes.""
"Then why are we still waiting?""
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because the educational account holder has disputed the authorization.""
Darius leaned forward.
"That's her stepfather. He's interfering.""
"Mr. Cole, the account is not in your name.""
"But my daughter gave me permission.""
"Then why did the account holder file a formal objection?""
Darius's jaw tightened.
"Because he doesn't want me involved.""
Evelyn closed the folder.
"That's not sufficient.""
Darius looked at her.
"Look, I need this money released.""
"Why?""
He hesitated.
"Business expenses.""
"Your application lists the money as education-related financing.""
"That's what I mean.""
Evelyn studied him.
"Are you using the loan to pay your company's outstanding creditors?""
Darius looked away.
"Some of it.""
Evelyn stood.
"Then we have a problem.""
Darius grabbed the folder.
"You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""
"No, Mr. Cole. The documentation is complicated.""
She pressed a button on her desk.
A security officer appeared at the door.
Evelyn spoke calmly.
"Your application is being suspended pending verification of the signatures and supporting financial statements.""
Darius stood.
"You can't do that.""
"We can, and we have.""
He collected his folder.
Then he leaned across the desk.
"You don't understand who you're dealing with.""
Evelyn didn't move.
"Actually, Mr. Cole, I think we're beginning to understand.""
Darius stormed out.
In the parking garage, he pulled out his phone and called Kendra.
She answered after the fourth ring.
"Hello?""
"Where are you?""
"At home.""
"Good. I need you to meet me.""
"Why?""
"Because you've made a mess of something that was supposed to help you.""
Kendra felt her stomach tighten.
"I didn't make anything.""
"You signed the papers.""
"I didn't know what they meant.""
"Don't play innocent.""
She closed her eyes.
"Did you use my signature?""
Darius went silent.
Then he laughed.
"You really believe Marcus, don't you?""
"I believe what I saw.""
"You saw nothing.""
"I saw a financial agreement with my name on it.""
Darius's voice hardened.
"Listen carefully. I have recordings proving you authorized everything.""
Kendra's hands trembled.
"Then send them to me.""
"Come to my office.""
"No.""
"Excuse me?""
"I said no.""
Darius's voice dropped.
"You owe me that much.""
Kendra looked toward the hallway.
Marcus was standing there.
He had heard everything.
She took a breath.
"No, Dad. I don't owe you anything.""
Darius went silent.
Then he spoke slowly.
"If you don't come here tomorrow, I'm going to tell everyone what your stepfather has been hiding.""
Kendra looked at Marcus.
"What do you mean?""
Darius laughed.
"Ask him why he really married your mother.""
The call ended.
Kendra slowly lowered her phone.
Marcus stood motionless.
Denise came out of the kitchen.
"What happened?""
Kendra looked at Marcus.
"What secret?""
He didn't answer.
She stepped closer.
"Marcus, why did Darius say you married Mom for a reason?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Then he looked at Denise.
And Denise began to cry.
Because there was one part of their marriage story Kendra had never been told.
May you like
One part that Darius had kept hidden for ten years.
And if he revealed it first, he could destroy the only family Kendra had ever truly known.
