Chapter 7: The Betrayal Inside Their Own Home
For nearly a full minute, nobody spoke.
Denise stood beside the dining table, staring at the text message on her phone. Her hands trembled so badly that Marcus finally took the device from her.
*Your electronic signature has been accepted. Loan disbursement is scheduled for tomorrow morning.*
Marcus read it again.
Then he looked at his wife.
"Denise, I need you to tell me something.""
She swallowed.
"What?""
"Have you signed anything online recently?""
"No.""
"Any financial documents? Loan applications? Electronic authorizations?""
"No, Marcus. I swear.""
He placed the phone on the table.
"Then somebody has your information.""
Patricia shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
"There's something I haven't told you.""
Kendra turned toward her.
"What?""
Patricia looked at Denise.
"About three months ago, Darius asked me whether I still had Denise's old financial paperwork.""
Denise frowned.
"What paperwork?""
"Your joint tax documents. Bank statements. Anything that might show your household income.""
Denise stared at her.
"Why would he ask you for that?""
"He said he needed to verify something for a business loan.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Did you give him anything?""
"No. I told him I didn't have your documents.""
Denise shook her head.
"That's impossible. I haven't shared financial records with Patricia in years.""
Marcus walked toward the hallway.
"Where's your old laptop?""
Denise followed him.
"In the bedroom. Why?""
"Because I want to know whether anyone has accessed our accounts.""
Kendra stood.
"I'm coming.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You don't have to.""
"I want to.""
For the first time in two days, he didn't argue.
They entered the bedroom.
Denise opened the bottom drawer of her dresser and pulled out an old laptop. Its silver casing was scratched, and one corner had a small crack.
She placed it on the bed.
"I haven't used this thing in months.""
Marcus switched it on.
The screen flickered before displaying the login page.
Denise entered her password.
Incorrect.
She tried again.
Incorrect.
"That's strange.""
"Try your backup password," Marcus said.
She did.
The laptop opened.
But something was different.
Several folders had been moved.
The browser contained saved passwords Denise didn't recognize.
And there was a recently opened document titled:
*WILLIAMS FAMILY FINANCIAL SUMMARY.*
Marcus clicked it.
A spreadsheet appeared.
It contained their household income, Denise's bank details, Marcus's retirement savings, and the estimated value of Kendra's education fund.
At the bottom was a note.
Potential collateral available through family authorization.
Denise covered her mouth.
"Someone copied everything.""
Marcus scrolled down.
The document properties showed it had last been edited three weeks earlier.
The username was:
*DCOLE_ADMIN.*
Kendra stared at the screen.
"Darius.""
Marcus nodded.
Then he noticed another line.
The document had been emailed to an address ending in a business domain.
He copied it onto a secure drive.
"Nobody touches anything else.""
Denise sat on the edge of the bed.
"How did he get into our laptop?""
Marcus looked at her.
"Who has been inside this house recently?""
Denise began thinking.
"Patricia. My sister. The insurance agent. The electrician...""
Then she stopped.
"Wait.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"Your brother.""
Marcus frowned.
"Anthony?""
Denise nodded slowly.
"He came over last month to fix the printer.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Anthony hasn't been here in almost a year.""
"He called me. Said he needed to pick up something from the garage.""
Marcus's expression changed.
"When?""
"About three weeks ago.""
Kendra looked between them.
"Who is Anthony?""
"My uncle," Marcus replied.
"Your brother?""
"Yes.""
Denise picked up her phone.
"He said he was helping Darius with some business paperwork.""
The room went silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
"What did you just say?""
Denise's eyes filled.
"I didn't think it meant anything. He said Darius was having financial difficulties, and he wanted to help him.""
Marcus looked away.
His younger brother had spent years being the opposite of him.
Anthony was charming, persuasive, and always looking for an opportunity.
He had borrowed money from Marcus twice.
Neither loan had ever been repaid.
But Marcus had never imagined he would become involved in something like this.
He took out his phone.
"Call him.""
Denise hesitated.
"Marcus...""
"Call him.""
Anthony Williams answered on the third ring.
"Hey, big brother!""
Marcus's voice was cold.
"Where are you?""
"At work. What's up?""
"We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"Your visit to my house three weeks ago.""
There was a brief pause.
Then Anthony laughed.
"What about it?""
"Did you access Denise's laptop?""
Silence.
"Marcus, what kind of question is that?""
"A simple one.""
"No. I didn't.""
"Did you give Darius our financial records?""
Anthony exhaled.
"Look, I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Answer me.""
"I helped him organize some paperwork.""
"What paperwork?""
"Nothing serious.""
"Anthony.""
"Business documents.""
"Using my wife's personal information?""
Anthony's voice became defensive.
"You're acting like I committed a crime.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"Did you give him our bank details?""
"I didn't give him anything he couldn't already find.""
Denise gasped.
Marcus stared at the wall.
"What does that mean?""
Anthony hesitated.
Then he said something that made Marcus's stomach drop.
"Darius told me Kendra had given him permission to handle the college money. I thought you knew.""
Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.
"You thought I knew?""
"Yeah.""
"And you helped him?""
"I was trying to help the family.""
Marcus laughed once.
It was a bitter sound.
"You helped a man who abandoned my daughter steal the money I spent six years saving for her.""
"Don't say it like that.""
"Then tell me what I should call it.""
Anthony lowered his voice.
"Listen, Marcus. I didn't know he was planning to use Denise's identity.""
"Did you know he was going to use Kendra's signature?""
Another silence.
Then Anthony answered.
"I thought everything was authorized.""
Marcus looked at Denise.
"You're lying.""
"Come on, bro.""
"Did you receive money from Darius?""
Anthony didn't answer.
Marcus felt something inside him break.
"How much?""
"Marcus...""
"How much?""
Anthony finally whispered.
"Five thousand dollars.""
Kendra covered her mouth.
Denise sat down.
Marcus stared at the phone.
"Five thousand dollars.""
"I needed it.""
"So you sold my family's information?""
"I didn't sell anything!""
"You gave him access to our private records.""
Anthony raised his voice.
"I was trying to make some money. Darius said he was arranging a legitimate loan.""
"And what did you think would happen when the lender discovered the signatures were false?""
"I didn't know!""
Marcus ended the call.
He stood motionless.
Denise approached him.
"I'm sorry.""
He shook his head.
"Don't apologize for something you didn't do.""
Kendra looked at Marcus.
"Are you going to report him?""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Yes.""
"But he's your brother.""
"And you're my daughter.""
Those five words silenced the room.
The next morning, Kendra sat in a small conference room at the university.
Angela Reed had arranged a meeting with the institution's legal adviser and a representative from Sterling Capital Partners.
Marcus and Denise sat on either side of her.
Patricia had also agreed to attend.
At 9:05 a.m., a man in a navy suit entered.
"Good morning. I'm Robert Hayes.""
He placed a briefcase on the table.
"Thank you for coming. I understand there are concerns regarding a pending loan application.""
Marcus nodded.
"More than concerns. The application contains forged signatures.""
Robert opened his briefcase.
"We've identified some discrepancies.""
Kendra leaned forward.
"Then why did you approve the loan?""
"We haven't released the funds yet.""
"But your message said the disbursement was scheduled for this morning.""
Robert looked uncomfortable.
"That was an automated notification.""
Marcus placed the printed agreement on the table.
"This is not my wife's signature.""
Robert examined it.
"Do you have evidence that the signature is fraudulent?""
Denise reached into her bag.
She pulled out her driver's license, a signed bank document, and several pages from her tax records.
"Compare them.""
Robert did.
His expression changed.
"All right.""
He turned another page.
Then another.
Finally, he closed the folder.
"We will suspend the application pending further investigation.""
Kendra exhaled.
"Will you notify the authorities?""
Robert nodded.
"We are required to report suspected identity misuse.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Good.""
But Robert wasn't finished.
"There is one more matter.""
He opened a separate file.
"The applicant listed an additional source of collateral.""
Marcus frowned.
"What source?""
Robert turned the document around.
The page contained the name of a property.
Kendra didn't recognize it.
Denise did.
She stared at the address.
"That's our house.""
Marcus went completely still.
"What?""
Robert pointed to the description.
"The property is listed as a secondary security asset.""
Marcus stood.
"That's impossible. The house is in my name and Denise's.""
Robert nodded.
"That's why we're investigating the authorization.""
Kendra looked at her mother.
"Can they take our house?""
Denise's face had gone pale.
Marcus placed both hands on the table.
"Not without a valid legal interest.""
Robert nodded.
"Correct. But the document claims that both owners consented.""
Denise shook her head.
"We didn't.""
Robert closed the file.
"Then we need to establish how the document was created.""
Marcus looked at the signature section.
His eyes stopped.
There were two signatures.
Denise Williams.
Marcus Williams.
And beneath them was a witness signature.
Anthony Williams.
Marcus slowly sat down.
His own brother hadn't just given Darius access to their private information.
He had helped create a document claiming they had agreed to put their home at risk.
Then Marcus noticed the date.
It was the day Anthony had visited their house.
Kendra looked at him.
"Marcus?""
He didn't answer.
His eyes were fixed on the witness signature.
For six years, he had sacrificed everything to protect Kendra's future.
And now, the people he had trusted were trying to use that sacrifice against him.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Anthony.
*I'm sorry. But Darius says if you report this, he'll tell everyone what really happened to your house ten years ago.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Denise noticed his expression.
"What is it?""
He slowly put the phone down.
May you like
"Something I thought was buried.""
And for the first time, Kendra saw fear in the eyes of the man who had always made her feel safe.
