Chapter 8: The Truth He Buried
Nobody spoke after Lauren said those words.
“I ran from him.””
The sentence stayed in the room like smoke.
Slowly spreading.
Impossible to ignore.
Maverick stared at Lauren as if she had become someone he didn’t recognize.
But I noticed something.
He wasn’t shocked that she was there.
He was shocked that she was talking.
That difference mattered.
Because it meant he wasn’t afraid of a lie.
He was afraid of the truth.
Richard stepped forward.
“Lauren.””
She looked at him.
Her expression softened slightly.
“Mr. Bennett.””
“You need to explain.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“I owe Amy that much.””
I tightened my grip on the letter.
“Then tell me.””
Lauren took a slow breath.
“Three years ago, I married Maverick because I believed he loved me.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm people developed after they had already cried every possible tear.
“He was charming. He was generous. He knew exactly what to say.””
She looked at Maverick.
“He made me feel like I was the only person in the world who understood him.””
I almost looked away.
Because I knew that feeling.
That was the most terrifying part.
Not that Lauren had been fooled.
That I had been fooled in exactly the same way.
“He told me he wanted to build a life together,” she continued.
“Then he started making decisions without me.””
Richard frowned.
“What decisions?””
Lauren looked at me.
“Financial ones.””
The room went silent.
Of course.
Again.
The same pattern.
“The money from my family’s trust was supposed to help us buy our first home,” Lauren said.
“But after we married, Maverick convinced me to move some of it into accounts he controlled.””
Maverick shook his head.
“That’s not what happened.””
Lauren didn’t even look at him.
“It is exactly what happened.””
Her voice remained steady.
“He told me it was temporary. He told me he was protecting our future.””
I felt a chill.
Those words.
Protecting our future.
The same words he used when explaining the money he took from me.
Lauren continued.
“Then I found out the accounts weren’t being used for investments.””
“What were they used for?”” Clara asked.
Lauren looked down.
“Debt.””
Maverick’s face tightened.
“I was going through a difficult time.””
Lauren finally turned toward him.
“No.””
The room became silent.
“You were making choices.””
Maverick looked away.
She looked back at me.
“He wasn’t just losing money, Amy.””
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Lauren hesitated.
Then said:
“He was hiding losses.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Losses from what?””
Lauren looked at him.
“Business deals.””
The room went quiet.
“Bad investments,” she said.
“Maverick kept borrowing money to cover the money he had already lost.””
I looked at Maverick.
“So when you met me…”
He didn’t answer.
Lauren did.
“He was already drowning.””
The words hurt.
Not because I felt sympathy.
Because I finally understood.
I had spent three years believing we were building a life together.
But I wasn’t building.
I was being used as a foundation.
“Amy,” Maverick said.
I turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
I looked at Lauren.
“What happened the night you disappeared?””
Lauren’s face changed.
The room became colder.
“That night, I found documents.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What kind of documents?””
“Similar to the ones you found.””
Everyone looked at Maverick.
Lauren nodded.
“Contracts.””
She looked at the paper on the table.
“Agreements he prepared without telling me.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was considering leaving.””
Maverick immediately said:
“That’s not true.””
Lauren looked at him.
“You remember the night I packed my bags.””
He didn’t respond.
“You remember telling me I would regret destroying your life.””
Nobody moved.
Richard’s face changed.
“Maverick.””
“I was angry.””
Lauren nodded.
“Exactly.””
She looked at me.
“And that was the moment I realized I didn’t know the man I married.””
I looked at Maverick.
“Did you threaten her?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Lauren stepped closer.
“You didn’t say the word threaten.””
Maverick looked at her.
“What?””
“You said I would lose everything.””
Silence.
“You said nobody would believe me because everyone thought you were the perfect husband.””
My chest tightened.
Because that sounded familiar.
Not the exact words.
But the belief behind them.
The belief that his image protected him.
Lauren continued.
“I left that night.””
“Because of the fight?””
“No.””
She looked at Maverick.
“Because I found out he had already prepared papers to blame me for the financial problems.””
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Evelyn whispered.
Lauren nodded.
“He was preparing to make it look like I had made the decisions.””
Richard looked horrified.
“Is that true?””
Maverick said nothing.
And that was enough.
I looked at the documents in my hand.
The postnuptial agreement.
The financial transfers.
The secret company.
It wasn’t random.
It was a pattern.
Maverick didn’t just hide mistakes.
He built escape routes.
Ways to survive after hurting someone.
Lauren looked at me.
“That’s why I tried to warn you.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn’t you come directly to me?””
Her eyes lowered.
“Because he found out.””
“What did he do?””
She looked at Maverick.
“He told me if I contacted you, he would tell everyone I was unstable.””
My stomach dropped.
The same tactic.
Destroy the person telling the truth.
Make everyone question them before they are heard.
I looked at Maverick.
“You really thought nobody would believe us.””
He looked at me.
“Amy, it wasn’t like that.””
I shook my head.
“It was exactly like that.””
For once, he had nothing to say.
The room was quiet until Penelope spoke.
“I need to leave.””
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying.
But not the way she cried earlier.
Not from guilt.
From humiliation.
“Maverick.””
He looked at her.
“I thought I was different.””
His face softened slightly.
“Penelope…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You told me Amy was the reason you were unhappy.””
She wiped her tears.
“But she wasn’t.””
She looked at me.
“She was just the next person you needed to believe that story.””
Maverick’s face tightened.
“Penelope, please.””
She laughed sadly.
“Please?””
She stepped toward the door.
“That’s the only honest thing you’ve said today.””
Then she left.
The door closed behind her.
And somehow, her leaving felt like another piece of the illusion disappearing.
Lauren walked toward the table.
She placed a folder beside mine.
“I brought these.””
I looked at it.
“What are they?””
“Proof.””
Maverick immediately reacted.
“Lauren.””
She ignored him.
“Bank records. Messages. Copies of contracts.””
Richard picked them up.
His face became darker.
“You kept these?””
“I had to.””
“Why?””
Lauren looked at Maverick.
“Because I knew one day he would do this again.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I saw the signs.””
Her eyes met mine.
“The way he talked about money.””
“The way he needed control.””
“The way he always had an explanation ready.””
I looked down.
Because every word felt painfully familiar.
Lauren reached into her bag.
She pulled out one final envelope.
“This is the last thing.””
I stared.
Another envelope.
Another secret.
I almost didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
Inside was a single page.
A letter.
Not from Lauren.
Not from Maverick.
From someone else.
Someone whose name made Richard’s face lose all color.
Because at the bottom of the letter was a signature.
*Thomas Bennett.*
Maverick’s uncle.
The man who had entered Room 237 with the family.
The man who had stayed silent.
The man who knew more than anyone.
I looked at Richard.
“Why would your brother write this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Because Thomas was the one who warned us about Maverick years ago.””
I looked at Maverick.
He was completely still.
“What did he warn you about?””
Richard took the letter.
He read the first line.
Then his hands started shaking.
“Maverick…”
His son looked up.
Richard’s voice broke.
“You did this before Lauren.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
Then at his son.
“This wasn’t your first time.””
Maverick said nothing.
Richard lowered the letter.
“The woman before Lauren…”
He swallowed.
“She didn’t disappear.””
The room froze.
“Then where did she go?””
Richard looked at Maverick.
May you like
And whispered:
“She died.””
