Chapter 5: The Marriage He Erased

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

The room had already given me more secrets than I could process.

The affair.

The stolen money.

The hidden business.

The fake future with Penelope.

The paternity test.

The threats.

And now this.

A wife.

Not an ex-girlfriend.

Not a mistake from his past.

A wife.

I stared at Maverick, waiting for him to laugh.

Waiting for him to tell me this was some horrible misunderstanding.

But he didn’t.

He just stood there.

Silent.

And that silence was the loudest confession yet.

“You were married?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Maverick looked down.

“Amy…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Answer the question.””

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Even after everything else.

Even after the betrayal.

Somehow, this felt different.

Because an affair was a choice made during a relationship.

But this?

This meant he had walked into my life carrying a lie from the beginning.

I looked at the wedding ring on my finger.

A ring he placed there while another woman had once worn his last name.

“How long?””

Maverick swallowed.

“Eight months.””

Eight months.

I almost laughed.

“Eight months?””

He nodded.

“You were married for eight months?””

“Yes.””

“And when did she become your ex-wife?””

He didn’t answer.

My chest tightened.

“Maverick.””

“Three years ago.””

Three years.

I looked at him.

Three years ago was the same year we met.

The same year he told me he had finally found someone who understood him.

The same year he told me his past was simple.

A few relationships.

A few heartbreaks.

Nothing serious.

A lie.

Every memory I had with him suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.

Evelyn looked devastated.

“I told you to tell her.””

Maverick turned toward his mother.

“Mom.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

“I told you before you proposed. I told you before you bought the ring. I told you before you invited her into this family.””

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

The question came quietly.

But it changed everything.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“You knew he was married before?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me marry him?””

Her face collapsed.

“I thought he had changed.””

I stared at her.

People always said that.

They changed.

They learned.

They became better.

But what did that mean when someone’s secrets kept growing?

“I’m sorry,” Evelyn whispered.

I looked away.

An apology couldn’t return the morning.

It couldn’t erase the vows waiting downstairs.

It couldn’t erase the moment I walked into this room believing I was about to start my forever.

Clara looked at her brother.

“I don’t understand.””

Nobody looked at her.

She shook her head.

“You told us she left.””

Maverick said nothing.

“You told everyone she left you.””

Still nothing.

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“She didn’t leave you, did she?””

Maverick’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

The question hung in the air.

Finally, Maverick spoke.

“She found out about the money.””

I froze.

The same thing.

Always the same thing.

Money.

Secrets.

Control.

“What money?”” I asked.

Maverick looked at me.

His expression changed.

Like he realized he had said too much.

Evelyn answered.

“His first wife discovered he had taken money from her family’s account.””

I stared.

“How much?””

Nobody spoke.

Richard had returned to the doorway.

I hadn’t even noticed him come back.

His face was harder than before.

“Half a million dollars.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Maverick.

“You did this before.””

His eyes closed.

“Amy…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You did this before.””

He stepped closer.

“I was younger.””

“You were thirty.””

He stopped.

“I made mistakes.””

Again.

That word.

Mistakes.

I looked at the floor.

The same man who had betrayed me was now revealing a history of betrayal.

The same pattern.

Different people.

Different years.

Same choices.

“What happened to her?”” I asked.

Maverick looked away.

“She left.””

“Because she found out?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Because he wasn’t even fighting anymore.

He knew there was nothing left to protect.

Penelope suddenly whispered:

“You said your divorce was complicated.””

Everyone looked at her.

Maverick looked annoyed.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“You told me your past was complicated.””

Her eyes filled.

“You never said you had a wife.””

Maverick looked at her.

“I didn’t want you to think differently about me.””

Penelope stared at him.

“And you thought lying would make me think better?””

No answer.

I watched her face.

The realization was finally reaching her.

She hadn’t stolen someone’s perfect love story.

She had stepped into a story that was already built on deception.

Clara walked toward the table.

She picked up the photograph.

“Who is she?””

Maverick didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Her name is Lauren.””

The room froze.

Everyone looked at him.

“You know her?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard looked at his son.

“Because I helped pay for the divorce.””

My heart sank.

“You knew too?””

Richard looked at me.

“I knew he had made a terrible mistake.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone knew.””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Everyone had pieces.

Everyone had warnings.

Everyone had information.

And I was the only person standing in the middle of the wedding aisle without the truth.

Maverick reached toward me.

“Amy, please listen.””

I stepped away.

“What else?””

He stopped.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What else don’t I know?””

His face changed.

Nothing.

Then something.

A tiny movement.

A hesitation.

And I knew.

There was more.

Of course there was.

I laughed quietly.

“How many?””

“Amy.””

“How many secrets?””

He looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.””

That answer shocked me.

Not because it was honest.

Because it sounded like even he had lost track.

I picked up the folder.

The documents.

The evidence.

The pieces of a life I thought I understood.

“I spent three years building a future with you.””

My voice became softer.

“I defended you.””

I looked at Penelope.

“I defended you to people who warned me.””

Then at Maverick.

“I defended you from myself.””

His eyes filled.

But I didn’t care anymore.

Because I finally understood something.

The person I had been trying to save was the person who kept destroying everything.

“I thought I was unlucky because I found out today.””

I looked around the room.

“But maybe I’m lucky.””

Nobody spoke.

“Because if I found out tomorrow…”

I looked at my wedding dress.

“If I walked down that aisle, said those vows, signed those papers…”

My fingers tightened around the folder.

“I would have been trapped.””

Maverick’s face changed.

“Those papers…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the folder.

“You brought them to the wedding.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I smiled.

A cold, quiet smile.

“Because I knew.””

The room went still.

Maverick looked confused.

“You knew?””

I nodded.

“Not everything.””

I walked toward the table.

“But enough.””

I pulled out another document.

This one was different.

Not financial.

Not legal.

Personal.

I placed it in front of him.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then widened.

“What is this?””

I watched him read.

And for the first time, he looked afraid of me.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

Because this document was proof that I hadn’t walked into Room 237 by accident.

I hadn’t discovered him by luck.

I had opened that door because I was ready.

Ready to expose everything.

“You thought you were going to surprise me today,” I said.

He looked up.

“But you were wrong.””

His voice dropped.

“Amy…”

I leaned closer.

“The wedding wasn’t the day I was supposed to find out about your secrets.””

I looked him in the eyes.

“It was the day you were supposed to answer for them.””

Nobody moved.

Then Richard picked up the document.

His face changed as he read it.

“Maverick…”

The room fell silent again.

Because this time, the secret wasn’t about his past.

It wasn’t about another woman.

It wasn’t even about money.

It was about what he had been planning to do to me.

Richard slowly lowered the paper.

And whispered:

May you like

“Son…”

“What did you sign?””
