Chapter 8: What Happened Before Midnight

The elevator descended, but I barely noticed the movement.

My mother's hand rested on my shoulder.

Neither of us spoke until the doors opened into the hotel lobby.

Guests in formal clothes moved between the reception desk and the ballroom entrance. A staff member carried a box of flowers past us. Somewhere nearby, a child laughed.

The world was continuing as though nothing had happened.

As though my wedding wasn't collapsing upstairs.

As though my mother hadn't been humiliated.

As though the man I had loved for four years hadn't been hiding a financial crisis behind promises of forever.

I guided Mom toward a quiet seating area beside the lobby windows.

"Are you okay?"" I asked.

She gave me a tired smile.

"I should be asking you that.""

"I'm fine.""

She looked at me for a long moment.

"No, sweetheart. You're standing. That's different from being fine.""

My eyes filled.

I sat beside her and leaned my head against her shoulder.

For a few seconds, I let myself be the daughter who needed comforting rather than the woman who had to make decisions.

Mom gently stroked my arm.

"I'm sorry this happened on your wedding day.""

I lifted my head.

"Don't apologize for something Marcus did.""

"I'm not apologizing for him.""

She hesitated.

"I'm sorry you had to discover the truth this way.""

That hurt because it was exactly what I had been thinking.

I had imagined so many possible endings to my relationship with Marcus.

A quiet conversation.

An argument that eventually led to reconciliation.

Perhaps even a difficult period during which we learned to communicate better.

I had never imagined discovering that he had prepared documents involving my inheritance without my consent.

I had never imagined seeing fear on his face because I had found something he desperately wanted to keep hidden.

And I had never imagined that, on the morning I was supposed to marry him, I would be sitting beside my mother wondering whether the last four years had meant the same thing to both of us.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*Please don't leave yet. I need to tell you what happened last night.*

I stared at the screen.

Mom noticed.

"Is that her?""

I nodded.

"Do you want to hear what she has to say?"" she asked.

I thought about it.

Vanessa had lied.

She had helped Marcus search my room.

She had cut my mother's hair and refused to stop when asked.

I had every reason not to trust her.

But she had also been the first person to admit that Marcus's explanation was false.

And she had shouted a warning as the elevator doors closed.

"I want to know the truth," I said.

Mom squeezed my hand.

"Then hear her out. But you don't owe her forgiveness.""

I sent Vanessa a message telling her to meet us in the lobby.

Five minutes later, she appeared near the reception desk.

She had changed out of her work clothes, but the uneven remains of her ponytail made it obvious that something terrible had happened upstairs.

She stopped several feet away.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked uncertain about whether she was welcome in a room.

"Can I sit down?"" she asked.

I nodded toward the chair opposite us.

She sat, keeping her hands folded in her lap.

"I don't expect you to forgive me," she began.

"Good.""

She flinched.

I didn't soften my response.

"You hurt my mother. You helped Marcus lie to me. I'm willing to listen, but I'm not going to make this easier for you.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I understand.""

"Then tell me what happened last night.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Marcus called me around eleven.""

I frowned.

"He told me he had forgotten something important in your room. He said he needed help finding a folder before the morning.""

"What did you believe?""

"That he was trying to organize the wedding paperwork.""

"And when you went into my room?""

"He wasn't there at first.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"What do you mean?""

"He told me to use the spare key card he had arranged through the hotel. He said you were already asleep and that I should look through your suitcase and the desk.""

I stared at her.

"How did he get a spare key card?""

"I don't know.""

That was something the hotel would need to explain.

Vanessa continued.

"I searched the desk. I found the document you saw upstairs, but there was another paper beneath it. A handwritten note.""

"What did it say?""

She swallowed.

"I didn't read all of it at first. I thought it was private. But then I saw your name and Marcus's name together, and I realized it wasn't ordinary paperwork.""

"What happened next?""

"Marcus arrived.""

I leaned forward.

"Why did he come if he had sent you to find the documents?""

"He said he wanted to check something himself.""

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

"He was carrying an envelope. He asked me whether I had found the original signature page. When I told him I had found the draft, he got angry.""

"What did he do?""

"He started searching your desk. Then he opened your suitcase.""

I remembered the way he had demanded my purse upstairs.

"What was he looking for?""

"I don't know. He kept saying that he needed to make sure everything was in place before the ceremony.""

I watched her carefully.

"Then you said he wasn't in my room to find the papers.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"He was waiting for someone.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"I didn't see the person's face clearly.""

"Was it a man or a woman?""

"A man.""

"Did you know him?""

"No.""

She paused.

"But Marcus did.""

I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of my chair.

"What happened when he arrived?""

Vanessa looked toward the hotel entrance, as though she expected someone to walk through it.

"The man gave Marcus another envelope. They spoke quietly. I heard them mention the wedding, the money, and a deadline.""

"What deadline?""

"I don't know. Marcus said he needed everything completed before noon.""

Noon.

My wedding ceremony had been scheduled before then.

The timing felt deliberate.

"Did they mention me?""

Vanessa nodded.

"They said you wouldn't agree if you knew the full story.""

My throat went dry.

"What full story?""

"I couldn't hear everything. But the man asked whether you had signed the agreement. Marcus said the signature was being handled.""

I stared at her.

"Being handled?""

"Those were his words.""

My mother made a small, distressed sound beside me.

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Then Marcus told me to leave. He said if anyone asked, I had never been in your room.""

"And you agreed?""

She looked ashamed.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Marcus?""

She nodded.

I leaned back, trying to absorb everything.

A stranger.

A second envelope.

A deadline before noon.

A document bearing my signature.

Marcus had not simply been panicking about debts. He had been coordinating something with another person, and that person expected the paperwork to be completed before my wedding ceremony.

"Do you remember anything about the man?"" I asked.

"His voice. He sounded older than Marcus. He wore a dark suit and carried a leather folder.""

"Anything else?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He called Marcus by a different name.""

I frowned.

"What name?""

"Daniel.""

The name meant nothing to me.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes. He said, 'Daniel, you promised me this would be settled before noon.''"

I looked at Mom.

She was staring at Vanessa with an expression I couldn't understand.

"Mom?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she reached into her purse and took out her phone.

"I think I may know who that man is.""

My pulse quickened.

"Who?""

Mom opened an old photograph.

It showed my father standing outside a building with two other men.

One was a younger Marcus, smiling at the camera.

The other was a man in a dark suit.

Mom enlarged the image with trembling fingers.

"I haven't seen him in years," she whispered.

I leaned closer.

She pointed at the man standing beside my father.

"He used to work with your dad.""

May you like

Then she looked at me.

"And if I'm remembering correctly, your father stopped trusting him shortly before he died.""
