Chapter 5: The Signature I Never Wrote
I read the first paragraph three times.
The words refused to settle into meaning.
My full legal name appeared at the top of the document, followed by a description of a financial agreement I had never seen before.
Beneath it were references to assets, authorization, and a transfer of ownership.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
It looked like mine.
The slant of the letters.
The curve of the final stroke.
Even the small mark I always made beneath my surname when signing quickly.
But I had never signed that document.
"Marcus," I whispered, "what is this?""
He reached toward the paper.
I pulled it away.
"Don't touch it.""
"You're misunderstanding what you're reading.""
"Then explain it.""
He glanced at the document.
"It's a draft.""
"A draft of what?""
"Something we were going to discuss after the wedding.""
I stared at him.
"Why is my signature on it?""
He opened his mouth, then closed it.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"He told me you had already agreed.""
Marcus spun toward her.
"I told you to be quiet!""
"And I told you I wasn't going to take the blame for everything!""
Their voices rose, but I barely heard them.
I was staring at my name.
For years, I had trusted Marcus with the details of my life.
He knew where I kept important documents. He knew which files I stored in my home office. He knew the password to the laptop I used for personal paperwork because I had once asked him to help me recover a lost file.
I had given him access because I loved him.
Because I believed that trust was what made a relationship different from a business arrangement.
Now I wondered whether he had viewed my trust as an opportunity.
"What did you sign?"" I asked Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"Nothing.""
"Then why did you say he told you I had agreed?""
"Because he did!""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Nia, listen to me. The document isn't what you think it is.""
I lifted it.
"Then tell me what it is.""
He looked toward the elevator.
I followed his gaze.
He was calculating something.
Perhaps how to leave.
Perhaps how to get the document away from me.
Either possibility made me hold it more tightly.
"Is this why you came to my room last night?"" I asked.
He hesitated.
"Partly.""
"Partly?""
"I needed to find the original paperwork.""
My stomach twisted.
"What original paperwork?""
He didn't answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching him with an expression that seemed almost pleading.
"Tell her," Vanessa said quietly.
Marcus glared at her.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then why did you ask me to help you?""
My heart began pounding again.
"Help him do what?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
For a moment, I thought she would refuse to speak.
Then she looked at me.
"He told me you wanted to change the financial arrangements after the wedding. He said you were nervous and didn't want to tell anyone until everything was finalized.""
"I never said that.""
"I know that now.""
Her words came out in a whisper.
I felt cold all over.
"What did he ask you to do?""
Vanessa looked down at the scissors she was still holding.
"He asked me to go into your room and look for a folder.""
"What folder?""
"I don't know. He said it would be in your suitcase or your desk.""
"And you agreed?""
She flinched.
"I thought I was helping him.""
I looked at Marcus.
"You sent her into my room to search through my belongings?""
He rubbed his face.
"It wasn't like that.""
"How many more times are you going to say that?""
"I was trying to protect our future.""
"Our future?""
He nodded quickly, as though he had finally found an explanation that could save him.
"Yes. There are things you don't understand about the arrangements we've been making. I was going to explain everything after the wedding, when we had time to sit down and talk.""
"What arrangements?""
He looked at the document in my hand.
"I needed your authorization for something. That's all.""
I felt sick.
"Did you forge my signature?""
"No!""
His denial was immediate.
But he didn't sound offended by the accusation.
He sounded frightened of its consequences.
"Then whose signature is this?""
He stared at the page.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
"That's not what you told me last night.""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Enough!""
"No," she snapped.
"You told me she had already signed. You said you just needed the original copy because the bank wanted additional paperwork.""
The word bank seemed to silence the entire hallway.
I looked down at the document.
Bank.
Financial authorization.
Transfer of ownership.
Suddenly, the details felt much more serious than a secret meeting or a hidden relationship.
"What bank?"" I asked.
Neither answered.
"What were you trying to transfer?""
Marcus took another step toward me.
"Nia, please. We need to have this conversation without an audience.""
I shook my head.
"You brought an audience into my room last night. You involved Vanessa. You lied to me. And now you're asking me to protect your privacy?""
His shoulders sagged.
"I'm asking you to trust me.""
Those words might once have broken my resistance.
Now they only made me angrier.
"You don't get to ask for trust after using it against me.""
My mother had remained quiet throughout the confrontation.
She stepped closer and looked at the document over my shoulder.
Her expression changed as she read.
"Sweetheart," she said carefully, "do you recognize this account number?""
I looked where she was pointing.
A sequence of digits appeared in the second paragraph.
At first, they meant nothing.
Then I remembered seeing the same number months earlier, on a statement I had placed in a folder at home.
It was connected to an account that held money my father had left me.
Money I had never considered mine alone.
After Dad died, Mom had insisted that I preserve it for my future. I had used a small portion for my education, but the rest remained untouched.
I had never discussed the exact amount with Vanessa.
I had never authorized Marcus to move it.
And I had certainly never agreed to transfer ownership of anything to him.
My mouth went dry.
"Marcus, why is my father's account listed here?""
He looked at the paper.
For the first time, he seemed unable to manufacture an answer.
Then he said, "I can explain.""
I shook my head.
"No. You can explain it to a lawyer.""
His expression turned desperate.
"Nia, don't involve other people in this.""
I stared at him.
"You involved yourself in my finances without my permission. You involved Vanessa in searching my room. And you brought a forged document into my wedding preparations.""
"I didn't forge anything!""
"Then you should have no problem explaining it.""
He reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
My mother moved beside me.
"Don't touch my daughter.""
Marcus looked at her, and for a moment, I saw resentment flash across his face.
It disappeared quickly.
But I had seen it.
I had seen enough.
I placed the document inside my purse and took out my phone.
"What are you doing?"" he asked.
"Making a call.""
"To whom?""
I met his eyes.
"Someone who knows more about this paperwork than you do.""
I searched my contacts until I found the number of the attorney who had helped me review my father's estate documents years earlier.
Before I could press call, Marcus spoke again.
"Wait.""
I paused.
He swallowed.
"If you contact him, there's something you need to know first.""
My thumb hovered above the screen.
"What?""
Marcus glanced at Vanessa.
She shook her head frantically.
He ignored her.
Then he looked at me and delivered the words that made my entire body go still.
"The document wasn't supposed to be in your purse. Vanessa was supposed to get it before you arrived.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
May you like
His eyes dropped.
"Because if you'd seen it before the ceremony, you would never have married me.""
