Chapter 9: The Baby That Was Never Supposed to Be Mine

I couldn't hear anything except my own heartbeat.

The medical file remained open on my phone.

*EMBRYO TRANSFER — PATIENT IDENTITY DISPUTED.*

I read the words again.

Then I looked at Daniel.

"What did you do?""

He shook his head.

"Claire, this isn't what it looks like.""

I almost laughed.

"That's what you've said every time you've been caught.""

Robert took the phone from me.

He studied the photograph.

Then his expression changed.

"Where did you get this?""

"Marcus sent it.""

Robert looked at Daniel.

"Is this real?""

Daniel remained silent.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Answer him.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

Then he whispered, "Yes.""

My knees nearly gave way.

Rachel caught my arm.

"What does it mean?"" she asked.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why does my medical file mention an embryo transfer?""

He took a breath.

"Because the fertility clinic made a mistake.""

I stared at him.

"What mistake?""

He looked toward Margaret.

She was crying again.

I turned to her.

"You knew?""

She shook her head.

"No, Claire. I swear.""

Daniel continued.

"Before we got married, we had fertility testing done.""

I frowned.

"We never had fertility testing.""

"We did.""

"When?""

He looked down.

"Three years ago.""

I remembered that period.

We had discussed having children, but we hadn't been trying.

Daniel had told me he wanted to wait until we'd settled into the house.

I remembered attending a routine appointment with him after he complained about abdominal pain.

But I had never agreed to fertility treatment.

"You told me it was a routine checkup.""

"It was.""

"Then why was an embryo created?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because the clinic was conducting a private fertility program.""

I stared at him.

"Without my consent?""

He shook his head.

"No. Listen. They had samples from both of us.""

I felt sick.

"Samples of what?""

"Your eggs. My sperm.""

I stepped backward.

"You're telling me you collected my eggs without telling me?""

"No. The doctor said it was part of the testing.""

Ethan interrupted.

"Daniel, stop lying.""

Daniel glared at him.

"You weren't there.""

Robert looked at his younger son.

"Then explain why the clinic's records show a second patient identity.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

I looked between them.

"What second identity?""

Robert opened the medical file.

"There are two patient records.""

He showed me the photograph.

One was mine.

The other was Victoria's.

My sister covered her mouth.

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward her.

"Did you ever visit a fertility clinic?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Victoria, please.""

She stared at him.

"Don't tell me you used my identity too.""

He said nothing.

Her face crumpled.

I looked at Daniel.

"How?""

He finally spoke.

"Victoria wanted to have a child. She told me she was worried she wouldn't be able to conceive naturally.""

Victoria looked stunned.

"I never told you that.""

"You did.""

"When?""

"Last year.""

She shook her head.

"You're lying.""

Daniel continued.

"The clinic had already stored the embryo created from our samples. I arranged for the transfer under Victoria's patient profile.""

The room went silent.

I looked at my sister.

"Are you saying...""

Daniel nodded.

"The embryo was transferred to Victoria.""

Victoria stared at him.

"But you told me the baby was yours.""

"It is biologically mine.""

"And Claire?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Your pregnancy is different.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Different how?""

He swallowed.

"The clinic made another transfer.""

I couldn't understand.

"To whom?""

He looked at me.

"To you.""

My breath stopped.

I stared at him.

"You arranged an embryo transfer without telling me?""

He nodded slowly.

"But you didn't know it had happened.""

I shook my head.

"I never agreed to that.""

"Claire, the clinic made an administrative error.""

Robert's voice became cold.

"An administrative error doesn't explain forged consent forms.""

Daniel looked away.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Whose consent forms?""

Robert opened another document.

There were two signatures.

One was supposed to be mine.

The other belonged to Victoria.

I looked at them.

They were almost identical.

Because they were identical twins.

Someone had used our signatures to authorize the procedures.

I looked at Victoria.

"Did you sign this?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

"Claire, I swear.""

Daniel suddenly interrupted.

"Marcus arranged everything.""

Robert turned toward him.

"Marcus?""

Daniel nodded.

"He knew the clinic director. He said he could help us.""

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"So you used your business partner to arrange an illegal fertility procedure involving your wife and mistress?""

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I didn't know the second transfer would happen!""

I stared at him.

"Then why did you let it happen?""

He looked at me.

"Because I thought it would save our marriage.""

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

"How?""

He stepped closer.

"You wanted a baby. I wanted to give you one.""

"You could have told me.""

"I was afraid you'd refuse.""

I stared at him.

"Then you had no right.""

He lowered his head.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Victoria suddenly sat down.

She placed both hands over her stomach.

"Wait.""

We all turned toward her.

She looked at Daniel.

"If the embryo was created from Claire's eggs and your sperm...""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"And transferred into me...""

He nodded again.

"Then the baby I'm carrying is biologically Claire's child too?""

Daniel's face changed.

"Yes.""

Victoria started crying.

I couldn't move.

The baby inside my sister was genetically mine.

And the baby inside me was genetically mine too.

But there was something else.

The second transfer had apparently used a different embryo.

Robert looked at the medical records.

"According to these documents, two embryos were created.""

I stared at him.

"Two?""

He nodded.

"One was transferred to Victoria. The other was transferred to Claire.""

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"How could the clinic transfer an embryo to Claire without her knowledge?""

Robert turned another page.

"Because someone changed the records to show that Victoria was the patient.""

I frowned.

"Then why was my name on the file?""

Robert pointed to the final page.

"Because the embryo transfer was initially scheduled for Victoria. But the clinic's records show a second appointment under Claire's name.""

I felt dizzy.

"Who attended that appointment?""

Robert studied the signature.

Then he looked up.

"According to the clinic's security log, the woman who entered the building was Victoria.""

I stared at my sister.

She began shaking her head.

"I didn't.""

Robert turned the page.

"She used Claire's identity. The clinic believed she was Claire.""

Daniel interrupted.

"That's not true.""

Robert looked at him.

"Then explain why the security footage shows you waiting outside.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ethan whispered, "You were both there.""

Daniel didn't respond.

I looked at Victoria.

"Did you go to the clinic pretending to be me?""

She was crying too hard to speak.

Finally, she nodded.

I felt my heart break.

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because Daniel told me you had agreed.""

I turned toward him.

"Did you tell her that?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

I laughed through my tears.

"You told her I agreed to have an embryo transferred?""

"I thought it would be easier.""

"Easier?""

He stepped forward.

"I wanted both of us to have children. I thought if we had the babies, we could finally stop fighting.""

I stared at him.

"You thought giving my sister my child would stop us fighting?""

He looked down.

Then Robert spoke.

"There is something else in the file.""

He removed a final page.

It was a consent form for genetic testing.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

*Embryo A: Claire Parker.*

*Embryo B: Claire Parker and Daniel Parker.*

I frowned.

"Why are there two different entries?""

Robert looked troubled.

"Because one embryo was created using Claire's egg and Daniel's sperm.""

He pointed to the second entry.

"And the other was created using a donor egg.""

I stared at him.

"Whose donor egg?""

Robert hesitated.

Then he looked toward Margaret.

Margaret began shaking her head.

"No.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Margaret?""

She looked at me through her tears.

"I never wanted you to find out this way.""

My heart began pounding.

"What are you talking about?""

Robert answered quietly.

"The second embryo was created using an egg donated by a woman whose identity was kept confidential.""

I looked down at the document.

Then I saw the donor code.

*MP-019.*

Margaret suddenly sat down.

Ethan stared at his mother.

"Mom?""

She covered her face.

Robert's voice was almost a whisper.

"Margaret donated an egg to the clinic before she married me.""

I looked at the report.

Then at Margaret.

Then at my baby bump.

And I understood.

The baby I was carrying might be biologically related to the Parker family in a way nobody had ever imagined.

But before I could ask another question, Margaret lifted her head.

"There is something you need to know about the donor egg.""

Her voice trembled.

"That embryo wasn't created from my egg alone.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She looked directly at Robert.

Then she said:

"Your father-in-law was the biological father.""

Silence swallowed the garden.

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

My mind struggled to process it.

"Then the baby I'm carrying...""

Margaret started crying.

"Could be Robert's biological grandchild twice over.""

Daniel suddenly looked furious.

"That's impossible!""

Robert stood slowly.

"No, Daniel. What's impossible is that you thought you could manipulate biology, forge medical documents, and control every person in this family forever.""

Then he turned toward Ethan.

"There is one more thing.""

Ethan looked exhausted.

"What now?""

Robert handed him a small sealed envelope.

"I had the original embryo records independently verified.""

Ethan opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

And his expression changed completely.

"What?"" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

He simply handed me the document.

At the bottom was a note from the genetic laboratory.

*The two pregnancies are not genetically equivalent.*

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan swallowed.

"It means the babies may not have the same biological parents.""

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"And it means one of us has been lying about what happened at that clinic.""

Just then, my phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a name I recognized.

*THE HOSPITAL.*

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

"Mrs. Parker, we're calling about your prenatal records. There's been an urgent development.""

I gripped the phone.

"What development?""

The woman paused.

Then she said:

"Your original medical records were altered. And we have reason to believe your current pregnancy may be connected to a patient who disappeared from this hospital three years ago.""

I looked at Robert.

His face had gone white.

Because he knew exactly who that patient was.

May you like

And when he finally whispered her name, Victoria began screaming.

"NO! SHE'S DEAD!""
