Chapter 3: Two Pregnancies, One Impossible Truth

I didn't cry.

Not immediately.

I just stared at the laboratory report in Ethan's hand.

The white paper trembled slightly between his fingers.

"Give it to me," I whispered.

Ethan hesitated.

"Claire, I need you to understand—"

"Give. It. To. Me.""

He handed it over.

The report contained several pages, but one line stood out.

*PATERNITY TEST — PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0.00%.*

I read it once.

Then again.

My husband stepped toward me.

"Claire, listen.""

I looked up.

"Is this real?""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Victoria answered.

"Yes.""

I turned toward her.

"How do you know?""

She looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

Ethan took a slow breath.

"Because Daniel isn't the father of your baby.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

"Then who is?""

Nobody spoke.

My mother began sobbing.

Rachel whispered my name.

I looked at Daniel again.

He was pale, sweating, and refusing to meet my eyes.

"Who is the father?""

He finally spoke.

"Claire, I didn't know.""

"Didn't know what?""

"That the test would come back like this.""

I laughed in disbelief.

"You knew there was a test?""

He swallowed.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"That's because I arranged it.""

I stared at her.

"You arranged a paternity test for my baby?""

She nodded.

"Someone needed to know the truth.""

"Why?""

Her expression became cold.

"Because Daniel promised me something.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Victoria, shut up.""

"No. You promised me that if I got pregnant, you would finally leave Claire.""

He shook his head.

"I never promised that.""

"You said it in your apartment.""

"I was trying to calm you down!""

Victoria's face reddened.

"So now I'm a liar?""

Ethan stepped between them.

"Both of you need to stop.""

I could barely hear them.

My mind was racing through the last few months.

The pregnancy appointment.

Daniel's nervous smile.

The way he had avoided discussing the baby's features.

The time he'd asked whether my doctor had recommended genetic testing.

Had he known?

Had he suspected something?

I touched my stomach.

My baby kicked.

A tiny movement beneath my palm.

And suddenly the only thing I could think about was protecting that child.

I looked at Ethan.

"Tell me everything.""

He nodded.

"Six weeks ago, Daniel came to my apartment. He was drunk. He told me Victoria was pregnant and that you were expecting a child too.""

I swallowed.

"Why would he tell you that?""

"Because he wanted me to help him figure out what to do.""

Daniel interrupted.

"That's not how it happened.""

Ethan ignored him.

"He said there was a possibility that your baby wasn't his. He wanted a paternity test without you knowing.""

I stared at Daniel.

"You were planning to test our baby behind my back?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"I was confused.""

"About what?""

"About dates. About things Victoria had said.""

Victoria let out a sharp laugh.

"Don't you dare pretend I made this up.""

Ethan continued.

"I refused to help him. But someone had already sent a sample to a private laboratory.""

I looked at the report again.

"Who?""

Ethan glanced at Daniel.

"He did.""

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How?""

"Through a prenatal screening arrangement," Ethan said.

"He told the clinic he was authorized to receive the results.""

I stared at him.

"Without my permission?""

Daniel finally looked at me.

"I needed to know.""

I stepped closer.

"You needed to know whether my baby was yours before you decided whether to stay married to me?""

He had no answer.

Then Victoria said something that made the situation even worse.

"That's not even the secret he should be worried about.""

Everyone turned toward her.

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Victoria.""

She smiled.

"Tell her, Daniel.""

He shook his head.

"Don't.""

"Tell your wife why you were so desperate to get the results.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

Victoria took a step closer.

"Because Daniel already knew there was a chance you were carrying someone else's child.""

My mouth went dry.

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Ethan.

And for the first time, Ethan seemed uncomfortable.

I turned toward him.

"Ethan?""

He stared at the floor.

"There's something I should have told you months ago.""

My heart began pounding.

"What?""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Ethan, don't.""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"You don't get to control this anymore.""

He looked directly at me.

"Last summer, before you became pregnant, you and I had a conversation at the lake house.""

I frowned.

"The lake house?""

"Yes. Daniel had left early that evening. You stayed outside because you were upset about something he said.""

I remembered the evening.

It had been raining.

I had been sitting on the wooden porch, wrapped in a blanket, when Ethan brought me a cup of tea.

We talked for almost an hour.

But nothing inappropriate had happened.

"Yes," I said slowly.

"I remember.""

Ethan nodded.

"I told you that Daniel wasn't being honest with you.""

I looked at him.

"You said he was working too much.""

"That wasn't all I said.""

Daniel interrupted.

"That's enough.""

Ethan's voice rose.

"No. You made me carry this for months.""

I felt dizzy.

"Carry what?""

Ethan took a breath.

"That night, Daniel came back to the lake house after midnight. He was drunk. He saw us sitting together earlier and decided something had happened between us.""

I shook my head.

"Nothing happened.""

"I know.""

"Then why—"

"Because Daniel accused me of sleeping with you.""

I stared at him.

"And you denied it?""

"Of course.""

Ethan looked toward his brother.

"But Daniel didn't believe me.""

Daniel's face was rigid.

I turned to him.

"Did you think I cheated on you with your own brother?""

He said nothing.

"Daniel!""

He finally muttered, "I didn't know what to believe.""

Ethan laughed without humor.

"You knew exactly what to believe. You just needed someone to blame.""

My eyes filled with tears.

I looked down at the report.

Then I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

The report didn't list Daniel as the tested father.

It listed a reference sample number.

And underneath that was a name.

*ETHAN PARKER.*

I stopped breathing.

I read it again.

Then I looked at Ethan.

"No.""

He nodded slowly.

"Claire, I never touched you. I swear.""

"Then why is your name on this report?""

"Because Daniel submitted my sample too.""

I turned toward my husband.

He finally looked at me.

"Why would you do that?""

Daniel's face crumpled.

"Because I thought...""

He stopped.

"Because I thought Ethan had been with you.""

I felt a wave of nausea.

"And the result?""

Ethan answered.

"The report shows a biological relationship that excludes Daniel but is consistent with me being the father.""

I shook my head.

"No. That's impossible.""

Ethan stepped closer, but didn't touch me.

"I know what happened at the lake house, Claire. Nothing happened between us. And if this report is accurate, then there is something seriously wrong with the testing or the samples.""

Victoria suddenly laughed.

It was a strange, brittle sound.

"Interesting.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

She looked at the report.

"Because I know exactly what happened to that sample.""

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

"Don't say another word.""

She pulled free.

"Why not? You already destroyed everything.""

I looked between them.

"What are you talking about?""

Victoria reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small white envelope.

"I didn't come here with just an ultrasound.""

She placed it on the table.

Ethan stared at it.

Daniel took a step backward.

My fingers went cold.

"What is that?""

Victoria smiled, but her eyes were wet.

"It's the original laboratory report.""

I looked at the paper Ethan was holding.

Then at the envelope.

"What's the difference?""

Victoria leaned toward me.

"The report Ethan showed you was altered.""

The garden went silent again.

I turned toward Ethan.

He looked genuinely stunned.

"That's impossible.""

Victoria shook her head.

"No, Ethan. It's not.""

She slid the envelope across the table.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Your baby isn't Daniel's.""

My throat tightened.

"Then whose is it?""

Victoria's smile disappeared.

And the next words she whispered were so shocking that my mother actually stumbled backward.

"Claire, the man who fathered your baby is the same man who fathered mine.""

May you like

Daniel's face went completely white.

*And Ethan slowly reached for the envelope.*
