Chapter 8: The Daughter of a Monster
The truth changed everything.
Vanessa wasn’t just someone who had been manipulated by Richard.
She was connected to him by blood.
When David learned that Richard Cole was Vanessa’s father, he sat in silence for nearly ten minutes.
Then he asked one question.
“Did she know?””
Detective Harris looked at the file.
“We believe so.””
The room felt heavier.
Because that meant Vanessa wasn’t an innocent person caught in someone else’s plan.
She had chosen.
She had participated.
But there was one thing nobody understood.
Why?
Why target Ethan?
Why destroy our family?
The answer came from Vanessa herself.
She requested a private meeting.
David almost refused.
But Detective Harris convinced him.
“We need information.””
The meeting took place inside the detention center.
Vanessa walked in wearing plain clothes.
No designer outfit.
No perfect smile.
For the first time, she looked ordinary.
But her eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
David sat across from her.
“You lied to me for years.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
“You admit it?””
“I don’t have much left to lose.””
David leaned forward.
“Why Ethan?””
Her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Something close to disappointment.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa looked through the glass.
“Your family was never supposed to be happy.””
David’s face hardened.
“Why?””
“Because your wife destroyed my father.””
“My wife exposed criminals.””
“She ruined him.””
“She saved people.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You always make everything so simple.””
“No. You made everything cruel.””
For a moment, Vanessa said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“My father spent years rebuilding.””
David stared at her.
“He used you.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“He taught me.””
And that was the most frightening thing she could have said.
Because she wasn’t ashamed.
She admired him.
David stood.
“You’re exactly like him.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I’m better.””
That sentence stayed with him.
Because it explained everything.
Vanessa didn’t believe she was evil.
She believed she was superior.
Before leaving, David asked one final question.
“What was the real goal?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then said:
“Your mother left something behind.””
“What?””
“A file.””
David froze.
“What file?””
Vanessa smiled.
“If I knew, I would have taken it already.””
The meeting ended.
But David couldn’t stop thinking.
A file.
Something hidden by his first wife.
Something Richard wanted.
Something Vanessa spent years searching for.
That night, Rosa remembered something.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“When your wife died… she left a box.””
David frowned.
“What box?””
“A wooden box.””
“Where is it?””
Rosa looked embarrassed.
“I thought it was just personal things.””
“Rosa.””
She covered her mouth.
“I put it in storage.””
Within an hour, they were searching through old belongings.
Letters.
Clothes.
Photographs.
Then David found it.
A small wooden box.
Locked.
Inside was a letter.
Written by my mother.
The first sentence made everyone stop.
*If you are reading this, it means Richard found Vanessa.*
David’s hands began shaking.
He continued.
*I discovered what Richard was doing. I know he will try to silence me.*
The room became silent.
The letter continued.
*But the evidence is not where anyone will look.*
David turned the page.
There was only one final line.
*Trust the person who stayed.*
Everyone looked at each other.
“The person who stayed?””
Rosa whispered.
Then her eyes widened.
“No.””
David looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed toward the letter.
“She didn’t mean me.””
“Then who?””
Rosa slowly turned toward the old security camera.
The one hanging above the doorway.
“The cameras.””
David stared.
And suddenly, everyone understood.
My mother hadn’t hidden evidence in a place.
She had hidden it in a system.
A system nobody would think to destroy.
A system Vanessa thought she controlled.
The security footage.
But there was one problem.
The old recordings had been deleted years ago.
Or so they thought.
Because when David checked the system, one file remained.
A recording from the night my mother died.
And in the final seconds of that video…
May you like
Someone appeared outside the house.
Someone nobody expected.
