Chapter 5

The court hearing happened fast.
Emergency custody protection.
Medical decision restrictions.
No contact order.
Karen appeared on video from detention with her hair perfect and her eyes full of hate.
Her lawyer claimed misunderstanding.
Stress.
Caregiver burnout.
He said Karen had been overwhelmed by my “behavioral resistance.”
Dr. Wallace testified.
He did not raise his voice.
He did not need to.
“Maya Hayes was recovering,” he said. “Her progress slowed sharply after treatment stopped. The cancellations were not medically authorized.”
Ms. Alvarez testified next.
Then Ethan.
My brother sat straight in the witness chair.
He looked older than sixteen.
Too old.
The lawyer asked if he hated Karen.
Ethan said, “Yes.”
The lawyer smiled like he had won.
Ethan continued.
“Because she hurt my sister.”
The smile died.
Then it was my turn.
Dad asked if I wanted to testify.
I said yes.
My voice shook.
But I spoke.
“She told me if I cried, Dad would think I was difficult. She told me if I got better, I would have to go live somewhere else. She told me Ethan would stop loving me if I made everyone tired.”
Dad broke down behind me.
I kept going.
“I thought maybe I really was lazy. But I tried. I tried even when she said I didn’t.”
The judge’s face softened.
Karen looked away.
For the first time, she could not control the room.
The judge barred Karen from contacting me or Ethan.
Dad received temporary sole custody and medical authority.
The trust was frozen under court supervision.
Karen’s access to all family accounts was suspended.
When the judge said I would resume treatment immediately, I cried.
Not because I was afraid.
Because someone finally said I deserved to heal.
Outside court, Dad knelt beside my wheelchair.
“Maya, I am going to spend the rest of my life making this right.”
I looked at him.
“Don’t promise forever.”
He flinched.
I swallowed hard.
“Promise today.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“Today,” he said.
Ethan placed a hand on my shoulder.
“And tomorrow.”
I nodded.
May you like
Tomorrow still felt too big.
But maybe I could reach it.
