Chapter 14

Karen tried to sell her story when I was twenty-one.
A podcast.
A headline.
Stepmother Claims She Was Framed by Spoiled Stepdaughter.
Ethan sent me the link with a message.
Do not listen alone.
So I didn’t.
Dad came over.
Ethan too.
Jess, now my best friend, brought snacks like we were watching a terrible movie.
Karen’s voice filled the room.
She said I had been difficult.
She said Dad had been manipulated.
She said Ethan had assaulted her in the clinic.
Then the host asked about the canceled therapy.
Karen said she had been following medical advice.
Ethan paused it.
“Can I sue now?”
Dad said, “Please let him sue.”
I laughed.
But my hands shook.
Old lies still know where to press.
We responded with records.
Not rage.
Records.
Court documents.
Medical reports.
Pharmacy logs.
The podcast removed the episode within forty-eight hours.
The host issued an apology.
Karen violated the terms of her release by discussing me publicly and was sanctioned.
More importantly, families started reaching out again.
They had heard the story.
Some believed her at first.
Then saw the documents.
One mother wrote, My ex says our son is faking pain too. Your records helped me ask better questions.
That made the shaking worth it.
That night, Dad apologized again.
Not dramatically.
Just softly.
“I’m sorry her voice can still reach you.”
May you like
I leaned my cane against the sofa.
“It reaches me. It doesn’t own me.”
