Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal
The world became sirens.
Police flooded the building.
Doors slammed.
Phones rang.
Everyone shouted questions at once.
I couldn't hear any of it.
Lily was gone.
My four-year-old daughter.
My little girl with the pink suitcase.
I kept seeing her face.
The way she smiled when she asked for pancakes.
The way she held my hand.
The way she trusted me to keep her safe.
I collapsed against the wall.
Dad caught me.
“Emma.””
“She was right there.””
“I know.””
“She was right there.””
“I know.””
I pushed away from him.
“This is my fault.””
“No.””
“I should never have left her.””
“Emma, listen to me.””
“She was taken because of me.””
Dad grabbed my shoulders.
“We are bringing her home.””
A detective approached.
“We found security footage.””
We rushed into a nearby office.
The footage showed the hallway.
A man in a maintenance uniform entered.
He carried a toolbox.
He walked past Daniel's office.
Then returned twenty minutes later.
Lily followed him.
She wasn't crying.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit.
The detective froze the image.
The man's face was partly visible.
Dad stared.
“Frank.””
I couldn't breathe.
The detective zoomed in.
Frank was smiling.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
Frank laughed softly.
“Hello, Emma.””
“If you touch her—”
“She's fine.””
“Put her on the phone.””
“No.””
“Please.””
There was a pause.
Then I heard a tiny voice.
“Mommy?””
I broke.
“Lily!””
“Mommy, I'm okay.””
Frank took the phone back.
“You see? She's perfectly safe.””
“Let her go.””
“I will.””
“When?””
“When your father gives me what I want.””
Dad stepped closer.
“What?””
Frank laughed.
“The evidence.””
Dad's face hardened.
“You already know we have it.””
“I want the original drive.””
Mom looked at me.
The encrypted drive.
The evidence from the fire.
“Where is it?”” Frank asked.
I looked at Dad.
He shook his head.
“We don't have it.””
Frank laughed.
“You're lying.””
Then I heard Lily crying.
“Mommy!””
“Frank!””
The line went silent.
I screamed into the phone.
“Where are you?””
He answered.
“At the place where this all began.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“The old house.””
We drove there with police following.
The house had been abandoned for years.
The windows were boarded.
The garden was overgrown.
The driveway was covered in weeds.
But the garage door was open.
Inside, a single light hung from the ceiling.
Frank stood beside a chair.
Lily was sitting in it.
Her hands were tied loosely with a scarf.
I stepped forward.
“Lily.””
She looked at me.
“Mommy!””
Frank raised a hand.
“Stay where you are.””
I stopped.
Dad moved beside me.
“You're finished, Frank.””
Frank smiled.
“You always were a sentimental man, Richard.””
Mom stepped forward.
Frank's expression changed.
“Margaret.””
She stared at him.
“You destroyed our family.””
“I gave you a chance to disappear.””
“You murdered my son.””
Frank's face hardened.
“I didn't murder Daniel.””
Mom froze.
“What?””
“He died because Richard chose you.””
Dad stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Frank laughed bitterly.
“You were supposed to sign the documents. You were supposed to give me control of the company.””
Dad shook his head.
“I refused.””
“You refused because she found out.””
Frank pointed at Mom.
“She threatened to expose me.””
“I did.””
“So I gave you a choice.””
Mom's eyes filled with tears.
“What choice?””
“Leave your husband and disappear.””
“And if I didn't?””
Frank looked toward Lily.
“You know the answer.””
I felt sick.
“You've been doing this for sixteen years.””
Frank nodded.
“Vanessa was useful.””
“Where is she?””
He smiled.
“She'll be here soon.””
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Frank's smile disappeared.
He grabbed Lily's chair.
“Don't.””
I stepped forward.
“Please.””
He looked at me.
“You have something I want.””
I reached into my coat.
The encrypted drive was in my pocket.
I had found it that morning, hidden inside the old brass key's hollow handle.
I held it up.
“Here.””
Dad whispered, “Emma, no.””
Frank's eyes locked onto it.
“Throw it.””
I did.
He bent to catch it.
That was when Daniel tackled him.
The chair tipped.
I grabbed Lily.
Police rushed inside.
Frank fought desperately.
Then Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
She stopped when she saw the officers.
Her face went white.
“You promised me,” Frank shouted.
Vanessa stared at him.
“I didn't know you'd take the child.””
“You knew everything!””
“I never agreed to this!””
The police arrested both of them.
I held Lily so tightly she complained.
“Mommy, you're squeezing me.””
I laughed and cried at the same time.
“Sorry, baby.””
Dad walked toward us.
Then he stopped.
He was holding a document.
His face had gone pale again.
“Emma.””
“What?””
He handed it to me.
It was a copy of the original insurance file.
There was a signature at the bottom.
Not Frank's.
Not Vanessa's.
Mine.
I stared.
“I was twelve.””
Dad's voice shook.
“You never signed this.””
“Then who did?””
He looked toward Vanessa as police led her away.
May you like
She turned her head.
And smiled.
