Chapter 19

Years later, the city championship field was renamed after Coach Martinez.

I brought Sofia.

She was eight.

She knew the story.

Not all the ugly details.

Enough.

She stood beside the plaque and read his name slowly.

“He helped you?”

“Yes.”

“When that bad man threw you in the trash?”

I looked at Mom.

She flinched less now.

“Yes.”

Sofia frowned.

“Why would anyone do that?”

Brandon, standing nearby, answered softly.

“Because some adults think a child’s shine belongs to them.”

Sofia considered that.

“That’s dumb.”

We laughed.

She was right.

The ceremony was beautiful.

Kids ran bases.

Parents cheered.

Coaches signed a new conduct pledge.

The Fair Game Foundation funded a reporting office beside the field.

At the ribbon cutting, I held the scissors with Mom on one side and Brandon on the other.

That picture made headlines.

Former rivals rebuild youth baseball safety.

Rivals was not the right word.

Survivors was closer.
