Chapter 18

I retired from baseball earlier than people expected.
My shoulder gave me trouble.
My heart had shifted.
I loved the game.
But I loved the foundation more.
At my retirement press conference, a reporter asked if I felt cheated by injuries.
I smiled.
“No. I got to choose when to leave. That’s a gift.”
Mom sat in the front row.
Older now.
Proud.
Brandon sat beside her.
My wife, Lily, held our daughter, Sofia.
Yes.
I named her after the auntie energy I had admired in other families.
Our Sofia was two.
Loud.
Fearless.
Already throwing blocks with concerning accuracy.
After the press conference, Lily asked, “Are you okay?”
I looked at the field.
The mound.
The place where my life had both broken and begun.
May you like
“Yes.”
And I meant it.
