Chapter 9

My father recovered quickly.
He was tough.
Within a few weeks, he was back on his feet.
His arm was still in a sling, but that didn't slow him down.
The enemies were gone.
The threat was over.
And our family...
Our family was finally whole.
My mother and father were together again.
They were happy.
They held hands. They kissed. They laughed.
They were like newlyweds.
It was beautiful to watch.
One night, I came downstairs to get a glass of water.
They were sitting on the couch in the living room.
The lights were low.
They were talking quietly.
"I never thought I'd have this again," my father was saying. "You. Our son. A real home. I thought I'd lost it forever."
"You almost did," my mother said. "But you came back. And you fought for us. And I'm so grateful."
She kissed him.
"I love you, Vincent Moretti," she said.
"I love you too, Elena Moretti," he said.
I smiled.
I went back to my room.
Everything was perfect.
A few weeks later, my parents renewed their vows.
It was a small ceremony.
Just family.
Just us.
Marco was there. Maria was there. A few of my father's closest men.
My father looked at my mother like she was the most precious thing in the world.
My mother looked at my father like he was her whole world.
I was the best man.
I stood beside my father.
I was so proud.
When they kissed, everyone cheered.
After the ceremony, we had a big party.
My father danced with my mother.
He danced with me.
We laughed. We ate. We celebrated.
It was the happiest day of my life.
That night, my father pulled me aside.
"Son," he said. "I have something to give you."
He pulled something out of his pocket.
It was a ring.
A silver ring with a small black stone.
"This was my father's ring," he said. "His father gave it to him. And I'm giving it to you."
He put it on my finger.
It was a little big, but it would fit me someday.
"It represents loyalty," he said. "Family. Honor. Strength. Everything that matters. Wear it with pride."
I looked at the ring.
Then I looked at my father.
"Thank you, Dad," I said. "I will."
He pulled me into a hug.
"I'm so proud of you, son," he said. "You're going to be a great man someday. I know it."
I felt tears in my eyes.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged.
Like I was part of something.
Something big. Something important.
May you like
Something that would last forever.
