Chapter 15

I graduated from high school.

Top of my class.

Valedictorian.

My parents were so proud.

My father cried during my speech.

I went to college.

I studied business.

I continued to run Moretti & Son.

It was hard. Balancing college and the business.

But I did it.

And I thrived.

Sophia went to the same college.

We were still together.

Happy. In love.

My parents were still happy.

They traveled. They spent time with family. They enjoyed their lives.

My father was enjoying his retirement.

He spent his days gardening. Reading. Spending time with my mother.

He was at peace.

And so was I.

But then...

Something happened.

Something that would test everything I had learned.

Everything I believed in.

The son of my father's old enemy.

The man who had made my father fake his death.

He came back.

He wanted revenge.

He wanted to destroy everything my father and I had built.

His name was Dominic.

And he was just as dangerous as his father.

Maybe more so.

He started by attacking our businesses.

Vandalism. Theft. Sabotage.

Then he started threatening our people.

Our employees. Our friends. Our family.

He wanted to start a war.

And he was getting what he wanted.

My father wanted to handle it the old way.

With violence. With force.

"Dominic understands only one thing," my father said. "Strength. We need to show him we're stronger. We need to destroy him."

But I had a different idea.

"No," I said. "We're not going to do that. We're not going to go back to the old ways. We've worked too hard to build something good. Something legitimate. We're not going to throw it all away for revenge."

My father stared at me.

"Then what do you suggest we do?" he asked. "Let him destroy us?"

"No," I said. "We fight him. But we fight him with the law. With evidence. With the truth. We're not criminals anymore, Dad. We're business people. Community leaders. We fight our battles in the courtroom now. Not in the streets."

My father was quiet for a long time.

Then he nodded.

"Okay," he said. "Show me what you've got."

And I did.

I gathered evidence.

I worked with the police.

I worked with the FBI.

I built a case against Dominic.

For racketeering. For extortion. For vandalism. For threats.

For every crime he had committed.

And when I was ready...

I struck.

Dominic was arrested.

He was charged with multiple felonies.

The evidence was overwhelming.

The trial was quick.

He was found guilty on all counts.

He was sentenced to twenty years in prison.

He would never hurt anyone again.

I had won.

Not with violence.

But with intelligence. With honor. With the law.

My father was proud.

So proud.

"You did good, son," he said. "You showed me that there's a better way. A way I never could have imagined. You've made this family something better. Something I could never have made it on my own. Thank you."

He hugged me.

And I knew.

I had done it.

I had changed our legacy.

May you like

Forever.
