Chapter 5: The Plan That Used My Name

I backed away from the railing so quickly that my shoulder struck the wall.

For several seconds, I stood frozen in the upstairs hallway.

Then we'll have to use Maya.

The words replayed in my mind.

I wanted to believe I had misunderstood.

Maybe Mom meant she would ask me to talk to Chris. Maybe she meant she would explain how important the agreement was to my future.

But the stranger's response destroyed those possibilities.

"That would be unwise," he said.

"A minor should not be used as leverage in a property dispute.""

Mom's voice sharpened.

"She's my daughter.""

"That doesn't change the risk.""

I crept closer to the railing again.

The man closed his briefcase.

"You asked me to prepare the agreement based on the information you provided. If there are undisclosed debts or conflicting promises, I need to know before anyone signs.""

Mom lowered her voice.

"Everything is being handled.""

"Then why haven't you told your husband about the original loan?""

My breath caught.

The man knew.

He knew about Andre's money.

Mom looked toward the kitchen.

"Because he doesn't need to know every detail of my life before I married him.""

"He does if you're asking him to sign a document that may affect his property.""

She pressed her lips together.

The stranger stood.

"I'll give you until tomorrow morning. After that, I won't be involved unless you provide complete disclosure.""

He picked up his briefcase and walked toward the front door.

Mom followed him.

"Please. You said you could help.""

"I said I could review the paperwork. I didn't say I could make your husband sign it.""

He opened the door.

"And Mrs. Miller? Do not ask your daughter to pressure him. If she has already been involved in these discussions, you need to stop immediately.""

Then he left.

Mom shut the door so hard the framed photograph beside it rattled.

I hurried into my bedroom and closed the door.

My heart pounded against my ribs.

I had spent seventeen years thinking my mother was the person who would protect me from anything.

Now I had overheard her discussing me like a tool.

I didn't know what hurt more.

The fact that she might use my name to get money.

Or the possibility that she had already done it.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Chris.

*Chris:* Can you come downstairs? I want you to hear something directly from your mother.

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed.

*Me:* I heard the man in the suit.

Three dots appeared.

*Chris:* How much?

*Me:* Enough.

His reply came quickly.

*Chris:* Please come down. You deserve the truth.

I took a deep breath and went downstairs.

Mom was sitting at the kitchen island, her face buried in her hands. Chris stood by the sink, holding two glasses of water.

When I entered, she looked up.

Her eyes were swollen.

"Maya, honey.""

I remained near the doorway.

"Who was that man?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Someone helping us with a financial matter.""

"What financial matter?""

"Nothing that concerns you.""

I laughed without humor.

"Then why did you say you would use me?""

Her face went blank.

Chris set the glasses down.

"Natasha, answer her.""

Mom looked between us.

"I didn't mean it the way it sounded.""

"How did you mean it?"" I asked.

She stood.

"I meant that you could help Chris understand why the agreement matters.""

"By telling him he has to sign it because I'm his daughter?""

Her eyes filled again.

"I never said that.""

"You said, 'Then we'll have to use Maya.'' I heard you.""

She covered her mouth.

Chris pulled out a chair.

"Sit down, Natasha.""

She stared at him.

"Don't order me around.""

"I'm asking you to sit down and explain what you're doing.""

For a moment, I thought she would walk away.

Instead, she sat.

She folded her hands on the counter.

"The agreement is supposed to protect Maya's future.""

"Then why is there a loan agreement from before our marriage?"" Chris asked.

Her face changed.

"Andre showed you that?""

I shook my head.

"He showed me.""

Mom turned toward me.

"He's trying to turn you against me.""

"He gave me a document with your signature.""

"He has no right to keep dragging up something that happened years ago!""

Chris leaned forward.

"Did you borrow thirty-five thousand dollars from Andre?""

She didn't answer.

"Natasha.""

"Yes.""

The word was barely audible.

"Did you repay it?""

She shook her head.

Chris sat back.

For several seconds, he looked as if he couldn't find the words.

Then he asked, "Why didn't you tell me before we got married?""

Mom's eyes filled.

"Because I was ashamed.""

"That doesn't explain why you're asking me to sign a property agreement now.""

She wiped her nose.

"Things have become difficult.""

"How difficult?""

She hesitated.

Chris waited.

Finally, she said, "I have debts.""

I stared at her.

"What kind of debts?""

"Credit cards. A personal loan. Some expenses from when my business failed.""

"You had a business?""

She looked at me.

"Before I married Chris. I tried selling event decorations online. It didn't work.""

I remembered Mom's storage boxes filled with artificial flowers, ribbons, and glass vases.

She had told me they were leftovers from a friend's wedding.

I had never questioned it.

"How much do you owe?"" Chris asked.

Mom looked down.

"About eighty thousand dollars.""

The kitchen went silent.

Chris's expression changed so slowly that it frightened me.

"Eighty thousand?""

"That's not including the mortgage expenses I cover.""

"You don't pay the mortgage," he said.

She flinched.

"I pay for groceries, utilities, and things for Maya.""

"Yes. You contribute to the household. But that isn't the same as eighty thousand dollars in debt.""

"I didn't ask for this to happen!""

"No one said you did.""

Mom began crying.

"I thought I could fix it. I thought if I got the agreement signed, I could borrow against the house and consolidate everything. I'd make the payments, and nobody would have to know.""

I stared at her.

"You wanted Chris to put his house at risk without telling him about your debt?""

"I was going to pay him back!""

"With what money?""

She looked at me as if I had slapped her.

"Maya, please.""

"No. You don't get to tell me to stop asking questions now.""

Chris placed his hands flat on the counter.

"Why did you involve Andre?""

Mom looked away.

"He knows about the loan. I thought he might help.""

"Help how?"" Chris asked.

"By convincing you to sign.""

Chris shook his head.

"So you went to the man you kept away from Maya, asked him for money, and then asked him to help pressure me into giving you access to my property.""

"When you say it like that, it sounds terrible.""

"It sounds exactly like what happened.""

Mom's face crumpled.

I felt a strange mixture of anger and pity.

She had worked hard when I was young. She had kept food on the table and made sure I had clean clothes for school.

But she had also built a wall of secrets around us, and every time someone tried to open a door, she insisted it was for our own good.

I sat across from her.

"Why did you tell me Chris could afford the prom?""

She looked confused.

"What?""

"Why did you promise me the expensive dress if you knew things were difficult?""

"Because I wanted you to have something special.""

"You could have bought me a fifty-dollar dress and I would have been happy.""

"I wanted you to have the experience you deserved!""

"Then why make Chris feel like he had to prove he loved me by paying for it?""

Mom stared at me.

I continued.

"You told me I wasn't his daughter whenever you were angry with him. But when you wanted money, suddenly I was his responsibility.""

Her tears fell silently.

Chris looked away.

I had never spoken to my mother like that.

Part of me expected lightning to strike.

Instead, the kitchen remained quiet.

Finally, Mom whispered, "I didn't realize how it sounded.""

"That's the problem. You never stop to think about how your words sound to anyone else.""

She lowered her head.

For the first time that evening, I believed she understood at least a small part of what she had done.

Then Chris asked the question that changed everything.

"Natasha, is the eighty thousand dollars the full amount?""

Mom stopped crying.

She looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

"Are there any other debts? Any other agreements? Anything else that could affect this house?""

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.

"No.""

Chris studied her face.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

I wanted to believe her.

I desperately wanted her to tell the truth, apologize, and let us begin repairing the damage.

But something was wrong.

Her eyes kept moving toward the folder beside her.

Chris noticed it too.

"What's in that folder?""

"Nothing.""

He held out his hand.

"Then let me see it.""

She snatched the folder and pressed it against her chest.

"No!""

The single word echoed through the kitchen.

Chris went still.

I stared at my mother.

If the folder contained nothing important, why was she so afraid to let us see it?

Chris lowered his hand.

"Natasha, I won't sign anything until I've had a chance to review every document with an independent attorney.""

"You can't do that!""

"Of course I can.""

"You promised you would help me!""

"I promised to support this family. I never promised to put our home at risk without understanding why.""

Mom stood abruptly.

"You think you're so righteous because you have money!""

Chris didn't respond.

She pointed at him.

"You've spent nine years acting like Maya is your daughter whenever it makes you look good. Now you're using her against me!""

I felt my face burn.

"Stop using me as an excuse!""

She turned toward me.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed for you!""

"Then stop making me pay for it!""

The words burst out before I could stop them.

Mom froze.

I had never seen her look so wounded.

But I couldn't take the words back.

Chris stepped between us.

"That's enough for tonight.""

Mom grabbed the folder and stormed toward the stairs.

At the landing, she stopped and looked down at us.

"I hope you're both happy.""

Then she disappeared into the bedroom.

I sat down, shaking.

Chris poured me a glass of water.

"Drink some.""

I obeyed automatically.

After a moment, I asked, "Are you going to leave her?""

He sat across from me.

"I don't know.""

The honesty hurt.

"Do you still love her?""

He looked toward the stairs.

"Love isn't the same as trust, Maya.""

I held the glass between my hands.

"What happens if you get divorced?""

"We'll figure it out.""

"What happens to me?""

He leaned forward.

"You will still have a home. You will still have people who care about you. And you will never be responsible for solving an adult's financial problems.""

I nodded, but the words didn't erase my fear.

Chris had been my safe place for nine years.

If he left, I didn't know what our family would look like.

Before I went upstairs, he stopped me.

"One more thing. I want you to understand that the prom money is not the issue anymore.""

I looked at him.

"What is?""

"Whether I can trust your mother with decisions that affect all of us.""

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At 1:14 a.m., I heard footsteps outside my bedroom.

Someone stopped at my door.

I held my breath.

Then I heard the soft click of my mother's bedroom door opening farther down the hall.

She walked downstairs.

A few minutes later, I heard her voice from the living room.

"I need you to do exactly what we discussed.""

A man's voice answered through her phone.

"Are you sure you want to go through with it?""

"Yes.""

"What about Chris?""

Mom's reply was immediate.

"He'll sign when he realizes he has no choice.""

I sat up in bed.

Then she said the words that made my stomach turn.

"And if Maya asks questions, tell her nothing. She cannot find out who really owns the money.""

Who really owns the money?

I grabbed my phone and opened the recording app.

But before I could press record, Mom said another name.

A name I had never heard before.

"Because if Daniel discovers the transfer, he'll know I lied about the account.""

I froze.

Daniel.

May you like

Who was Daniel?

And what transfer was my mother talking about?
