Chapter 4: The Secret She Didn’t Know

The signature belonged to my late husband.

James Carter.

My hands shook.

“That’s impossible.””

The attorney nodded.

“It looks impossible.””

She explained slowly.

Years before he died, James had created a trust.

A protection.

A backup plan.

Because my husband knew something I had forgotten.

People change.

Circumstances change.

But documents remember.

“He protected the house,” the attorney said.

Brian looked at me.

“Dad knew?””

I touched the paper.

“Your father always worried about me.””

James had been the kind of man who checked the locks twice before bed.

The kind of man who carried extra coats in his car in case someone needed one.

He wasn’t rich.

But he prepared.

And somehow, years after his death, he was still protecting me.

The attorney smiled slightly.

“Your husband included one condition.””

“What condition?””

She handed me the document.

I read the words.

If anyone attempts to take advantage of Evelyn Carter while she is vulnerable, the property remains protected.

I covered my mouth.

Brian looked away.

His eyes were wet.

“Dad saved Mom.””

The next few weeks were a storm.

Police interviews.

Court appointments.

Evidence reviews.

But this time, I was not alone.

Brian sat beside me every step.

One afternoon, he came home holding a letter.

“Mom.””

His voice was strange.

“What happened?””

He handed it to me.

A letter from Latoya.

I opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

I know what you’re doing. But you don’t know what I have.

I looked at Brian.

“What does that mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

That night, someone knocked on my apartment door.

Brian reached the door before me.

“Who is it?””

A voice answered.

“It’s Marcus.””

Brian opened it.

Marcus stood there holding an envelope.

“I found this.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

He swallowed.

“It was hidden in the garage.””

My heart tightened.

“Where?””

“In a box with Latoya’s things.””

Brian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

And a handwritten note.

He stared at it.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He looked up.

“She wasn’t planning to take your house.””

I frowned.

“Then what was she planning?””

Brian turned the photograph around.

It showed me.

Sitting in my kitchen.

Chained.

Filmed.

But behind me was something else.

Something I had never seen.

A second camera.

Hidden.

Recording everything.

And on the back of the photograph were four words.
