Chapter 2: The Warning My Family Never Knew Existed
```text My father told me to apologize to my university because my family had just made sure I couldn't attend my own thesis defense.
He expected me to cry.
My sister expected me to beg.
My mother expected me to obey.
Instead, I sat at the kitchen table with a roll of tape beside me and waited.
Five years of research had led to this morning.
My doctoral project wasn't flashy.
It was a low-cost diagnostic imaging model designed to help clinics identify certain retinal abnormalities without purchasing expensive new equipment.
Two hospital systems were considering pilot programs.
A medical technology company was discussing a possible licensing agreement.
For the first time, my work had a chance to reach patients who couldn't afford specialized testing.
That was when Lila's attitude changed.
She started asking about licensing fees and patent ownership.
She even joked that our family deserved a share if my invention made me rich.
I laughed it off at first.
Then I found my desk drawer open.
Then came the strange questions.
Then, at 8:07 on defense morning, she crushed my glasses and watched me struggle to see.
Mom pushed a roll of tape across the counter.
Dad announced that the university had already started without me.
My phone had disappeared.
Every detail pointed in the same direction.
They wanted me helpless, late, and unable to explain myself.
But Professor Adrian Shaw had warned me that my university account had been targeted three months earlier.
He helped me establish an emergency protocol requiring me to check in before my defense.
If I failed to do so by 7:45, the system would automatically send him my location, archived messages, and a warning.
I had hoped never to use it.
Now it had activated.
At 8:09, I watched my family carry on as though nothing had happened.
Lila poured herself another cup of coffee.
Dad muttered something about my irresponsibility.
Mom asked whether I wanted more toast.
I almost laughed.
They still believed they controlled the situation.
Then I heard a vehicle stop outside.
Lila glanced toward the window.
“Who's that?””
I folded my hands.
“I don't know,” I said.
“Maybe you should answer the door.””
The first knock was sharp.
The second rattled the frame.
Then someone began pounding so hard that the entire house seemed to shake.
My father's face went pale when he recognized the voice calling from outside.
And when Lila heard the name, she stopped smiling.
May you like
Professor Shaw wasn't alone.
