Chapter 1: The Morning They Tried to Ruin My Future
```text At 8:07 a.m., my sister smashed my glasses and laughed, “I guess you'll have to fail.””
My doctoral thesis defense was supposed to begin that morning after five years of research.
Mom handed me a roll of gray tape.
“Fix them yourself.””
Dad glanced at his phone and delivered the words that were supposed to finish me.
“They've already started without you.””
I looked at the broken frames in my hands.
Without my glasses, anything beyond three feet became a blur.
Lila knew that.
She had waited until the morning that mattered most, when I had no time to find a replacement and no way to navigate campus safely.
My mother returned to her toast.
My father went back to scrolling.
And Lila stood in her silk robe, looking like she'd just won something.
What they didn't understand was that my research had become more valuable than any of us had anticipated.
I'd developed a low-cost diagnostic imaging model that could detect certain retinal abnormalities using equipment clinics already owned.
Two hospital systems were discussing pilot programs.
A medical technology company had expressed interest in licensing it.
Suddenly, my sister wanted to know everything.
How much was it worth?
Who owned the patent?
Would I share the money with family?
Then I discovered an open drawer in my bedroom.
After that, I stopped keeping important files where anyone could find them.
Now, standing in the kitchen with my shattered glasses, I finally understood why Lila was so desperate to stop me.
She didn't merely want me to miss my defense.
She wanted something I possessed.
My phone was missing from its charging stand, too.
I looked at her.
She smiled.
I didn't scream, beg, or accuse anyone.
I simply picked up the tape and sat down.
Lila's smile faltered.
“Aren't you going to panic?””
“No,” I replied.
“I think someone else is about to.””
Because three months earlier, my advisor had helped me prepare for exactly this kind of interference.
And by 8:09, the emergency protocol had already sent its warning.
Lila thought she had destroyed my future.
She had no idea who was about to arrive at our front door.
