Chapter 6: The Lie Hidden in Plain Sight
“I need you to explain this.””
Those were the words that broke me.
Not because Mark was angry.
Not because he raised his voice.
Because he sounded confused.
And confusion was worse.
Anger meant there was still certainty.
Confusion meant something had shaken the ground beneath us.
I looked at the papers in his hand.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at me.
Then he looked down again.
“Where did you get this?””
I blinked.
“Me?””
He held up the papers.
“This was found in my office.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t put it there.””
“Then why does it have your name?””
My heart stopped.
“My name?””
Mark walked toward the kitchen counter and placed the papers down.
I followed.
The first page was a financial document.
A bank statement.
The second was an authorization form.
The third was something that made my hands go numb.
A signature.
Mine.
Except it wasn’t mine.
I stared at it.
“That’s not my signature.””
Mark looked at me.
“You’re sure?””
The question hurt.
More than I expected.
Because after everything we had been through, after the way he had protected Rosie, after the way we had stood together…
For a brief second, he was asking if I was lying.
“Yes.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m sure.””
The room went quiet.
Diane stood near the doorway, watching.
Almost waiting.
I turned toward her.
“What is this?””
She crossed her arms.
“I was hoping you could tell us.””
Us.
That word bothered me.
Because she wasn’t here to help.
She was here to create doubt.
Mark looked at his mother.
“You knew about this?””
Diane hesitated.
“I found out recently.””
“When?””
She looked away.
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
Mark’s voice sharpened.
“It matters.””
Diane sighed.
“After Bethany told me she was worried about your finances.””
I frowned.
“My finances?””
Mark looked at me.
“What did Bethany tell you?””
Diane avoided his eyes.
“That things weren’t as stable as you claimed.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t about the documents.
This was about planting a seed.
Making Mark question me.
Making him think I had been hiding something.
“I don’t understand,” I said.
Diane looked at me.
“Bethany said you had been asking about transferring money.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“I have never asked to transfer anything.””
Mark looked at me.
“I know.””
That surprised me.
I looked at him.
“You believe me?””
His expression softened.
“I know you.””
The relief lasted only a second.
Because Diane immediately spoke.
“Do you?””
We both looked at her.
She stepped closer.
“People change.””
Mark’s face hardened.
“Enough.””
But Diane continued.
“I’m not trying to attack her.””
“Yes, you are.””
“No.””
She pointed toward the papers.
“I’m trying to make you see that maybe you’ve been too trusting.””
I stared at her.
The irony almost made me sick.
The woman defending the person who hurt my daughter was warning my husband not to trust me.
Mark picked up the documents again.
“Where is Bethany?””
Diane went quiet.
That silence told us something.
“She’s not here.””
“Where is she?””
“I don’t know.””
Mark looked at her.
“You’re lying.””
Diane’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You always think you know everything.””
“No.””
Mark stepped closer.
“I know when my mother is protecting my sister.””
Diane’s eyes filled with frustration.
“Because she needs help.””
Mark froze.
“What?””
Diane sighed.
“She made mistakes.””
“Stop calling them mistakes.””
His voice was low.
“Stop making everything sound accidental.””
Diane looked at him.
“She’s struggling.””
“So she hurts Rosie?””
“No.””
“Then what exactly are you saying?””
Diane had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
There was never one.
That was the thing about people who constantly excuse bad behavior.
Eventually, they run out of excuses.
A small sound came from upstairs.
Rosie.
We all looked toward the stairs.
I immediately moved.
But before I reached the first step, Mark was already there.
He went upstairs.
A few seconds later, I heard his voice.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
I followed.
Rosie was sitting up in bed.
Her eyes were half open.
“Daddy?””
“I’m here.””
She looked at his forehead.
“Does your head still hurt?””
Mark smiled sadly.
“A little.””
She frowned.
“Because of me?””
His face changed.
“No.””
He sat beside her.
“Never because of you.””
“But Aunt Bethany got mad because of me.””
I watched Mark struggle.
Because he wanted to protect her from everything.
Even the truth.
“Rosie,” he said gently, “sometimes adults do wrong things.””
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because some people forget how important it is to be kind.””
She thought about that.
Then asked the question that broke all of us.
“Did I do something wrong?””
Mark immediately shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became emotional.
“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””
Rosie reached out and touched his face.
“You’re my best daddy.””
Mark closed his eyes.
And for a moment, everything was quiet.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something told me not to.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Are you alone?””
My body went still.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Laura.””
I looked at Mark.
He heard the name.
His entire expression changed.
“Put it on speaker.””
I did.
Laura’s voice came through.
“I know what Bethany did.””
Mark stepped closer.
“What did she do?””
Laura was quiet.
“I know about the messages.””
His jaw tightened.
“Why are you calling?””
“Because I found out she lied to me too.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Laura continued.
“She told me you were planning to leave your wife.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
Mark looked at me.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know that now.””
Laura sounded ashamed.
“She told me you were unhappy. She said your marriage was falling apart.””
I felt sick.
Mark looked at the floor.
“And you believed her?””
“At first.””
Laura took a shaky breath.
“She showed me things.””
“What things?””
“Private conversations.””
My eyes widened.
Mark looked at me.
“What?””
Laura continued.
“She had screenshots.””
“Of what?””
“Your messages.””
The room became silent.
Because that changed everything.
Someone had been pretending to be us.
Someone had been creating a fake story.
A fake marriage.
A fake betrayal.
Laura’s voice became softer.
“I thought I was helping her.””
Mark’s face hardened.
“Helping her do what?””
A long pause.
Then Laura said:
“She said once you lost your family…”
She stopped.
“Once you were alone…”
Another pause.
“She would finally get what she deserved.””
Mark stared at the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Laura whispered:
“Bethany wanted your life.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Mark slowly looked at me.
Not with doubt this time.
With realization.
Because the truth was finally becoming clear.
Bethany wasn’t trying to destroy our family because she hated us.
May you like
She was trying to replace it.
And the next message that arrived on my phone proved she wasn’t finished.
