Chapter 8: The Girl Who Survived Them

For several seconds, nobody touched the phone.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

*Emily Parker.*

The girl who had been silenced.

The girl everyone spoke about in past tense.

The girl whose story had been buried beneath years of money, fear, and carefully controlled lies.

But she was alive.

And she was calling us.

Carol’s hand trembled as she held the phone.

“She shouldn’t have this number.””

Rachel looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Carol swallowed.

“I changed my number three years ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then how does she have it?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was only one possibility.

Someone had given it to her.

Someone wanted this conversation to happen.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, I reached out.

“Answer it.””

Carol looked at me.

“Chloe…”

“If she’s calling, we need to hear her.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Maybe we should think first.””

I turned toward him.

“Think?””

His expression fell.

“I mean we don’t know who’s listening.””

I held his gaze.

“Your father already broke into our home.””

He flinched.

“Thinking time is over.””

Carol pressed accept.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Older than I expected.

Careful.

Afraid.

“Carol?””

Carol’s eyes filled immediately.

“Emily?””

A shaky breath came through the speaker.

“I didn’t know if I should call.””

“You should have called years ago.””

The sadness in Carol’s voice surprised me.

“I know.””

“No,” Carol whispered.

“You don’t.””

A pause.

Then Emily said:

“I remember what you did.””

Everyone looked at Carol.

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What did she do?””

Carol didn’t answer.

She just listened.

Emily continued.

“You were the only one who looked at me like I was a person.””

Carol covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

The words came out broken.

“I’m so sorry.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Not uncomfortable.

Painful.

Because some apologies came too late.

Finally, Emily spoke again.

“Is Chloe there?””

My heart jumped.

I stepped closer.

“Yes.””

There was another pause.

“She’s Lily’s mother?””

“Yes.””

Emily exhaled.

“Then I need to talk to her.””

Carol handed me the phone.

My fingers felt cold as I took it.

“Hello?””

“Chloe?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Emily Parker.””

“I know.””

A small, sad laugh.

“I guess everyone knows my name now.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because there was nothing I could say that would erase what happened to her.

“Emily…”

“I heard about your daughter.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

“I saw the video.””

“What video?””

“The one Megan posted.””

Of course.

Megan’s attempt to control the story had done the opposite.

It had exposed everything.

“She made it look like I attacked her.””

Emily’s voice became quiet.

“That’s what they do.””

The sentence sent a chill through me.

“They make you look like the problem.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

“Emily, what happened to you?””

She was silent for a long time.

Then:

“I was eleven years old, and I found something I wasn’t supposed to find.””

I listened.

“My father was sick for months. He knew something was wrong at Peterson Holdings.””

“The money?””

“Yes.””

Emily’s voice was steady now.

“My father kept copies of documents because he thought he might need proof.””

“Did he show anyone?””

“He showed me.””

I closed my eyes.

An eleven-year-old girl carrying an adult’s burden.

“He didn’t mean to involve me,” Emily continued.

“He just trusted me.””

“What happened next?””

“I overheard Robert and Megan talking.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“About what?””

“About my father.””

“What did they say?””

Emily paused.

“They knew he was going to report them.””

The room was completely silent.

“They said they needed to make him look unstable.””

Rachel whispered:

“Exactly.””

Emily continued.

“They started telling people my father was under stress. That he was confused. That he was making mistakes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“They destroyed his reputation before they destroyed the evidence.””

“What happened to your father?””

Another pause.

“He died six months later.””

I felt my breath catch.

“Was it related?””

“I don’t know.””

The uncertainty was heartbreaking.

“But I know he lost everything before he died.””

I looked at the floor.

A family’s secret had become a child’s trauma.

“Emily, what happened the night you disappeared?””

Her breathing changed.

Even through the phone, I could feel the memory hurting her.

“I went to Robert’s office.””

“Why?””

“I thought I could get the documents.””

My eyes widened.

“You were trying to help your father?””

“Yes.””

A child trying to fix an adult’s disaster.

“What happened there?””

“I found Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Emily’s voice softened.

“He was scared.””

Daniel looked up.

“He was just a kid too.””

I didn’t expect that.

Not from her.

“He told me I should leave.””

My heart tightened.

“And did you?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought he could help me.””

Silence.

“But then Robert came in.””

I felt the room change.

Even now, years later, Robert’s presence haunted everyone.

“What did he do?””

Emily took a slow breath.

“He asked me what I knew.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“And?””

“I told him.””

Rachel whispered:

“Emily…”

“I was eleven. I thought telling the truth would make him stop.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought adults protected children.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

“But Robert didn’t yell.””

That surprised me.

“He smiled.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“He told me something I never forgot.””

“What?””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“He said, ‘People don’t believe children when powerful people tell them not to.’”

My stomach turned.

That sentence explained everything.

The Peterson family didn’t just use money.

They used disbelief.

They convinced people the truth was impossible.

“What happened after?”” I asked.

“They kept me there.””

“How long?””

“Two days.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where?””

“In a guest house they owned.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“To scare me.””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“They wanted me to say I made everything up.””

“And you did?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I stopped talking instead.””

The words hurt.

Because silence had been her survival.

“Then how did you escape?””

“Carol.””

Everyone looked at her.

Carol covered her mouth.

“I found her.””

Her voice broke.

“I found Emily.””

Emily continued.

“She helped me leave.””

I looked at Carol.

“But you said you failed her.””

Carol wiped her eyes.

“I got her out.””

She looked at the floor.

“But I didn’t expose Robert.””

“Why?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because I was afraid.””

Nobody judged her.

Because everyone in that room knew what fear could do.

Emily spoke again.

“Carol gave me money. She helped me disappear.””

“Why come back now?””

There was a long pause.

Then Emily said:

“Because Robert made the same mistake twice.””

I froze.

“What mistake?””

“He underestimated a mother.””

My eyes filled.

“He thought because Lily was young, nobody would believe her.””

My heart pounded.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw the reports.””

“What reports?””

“The ones Robert kept.””

My blood went cold.

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Emily continued.

“He has been tracking her because of something Daniel doesn’t know.””

Everyone turned toward Daniel.

His face changed.

“What?””

Emily spoke directly to him.

“Your father found out that your daughter inherited something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“The documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones your father thought disappeared.””

I looked at the folder on the table.

“What is it?””

Emily answered.

“Proof.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Proof of what?””

“That Robert’s entire empire was built on stolen money.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“But why Lily?””

Emily’s answer came softly.

“Because the missing evidence was hidden years ago.””

A pause.

“And Robert believes Lily has it.””

I stared at my sleeping daughter’s bedroom door.

“She’s five years old.””

“I know.””

“She doesn’t have anything.””

Emily’s voice became serious.

“That’s what makes this so dangerous.””

“What?””

“He doesn’t know where it is.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“He only knows one thing.””

I held my breath.

“What?””

Emily whispered:

“The person who hid it trusted Daniel more than anyone.””

My eyes moved to my husband.

Daniel went completely still.

“No.””

Emily said nothing.

Daniel shook his head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What?””

His face had lost all color.

Because suddenly, he remembered something.

Something from six years ago.

Something he had buried.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

And whispered:

“When Lily was born…”

His voice broke.

“My father gave me a gift.””

I waited.

“A gift I never opened.””

The room went silent.

“What kind of gift?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Something I thought was just sentimental.””

He looked toward the stairs.

Toward our daughter.

“But now I think…”

He stopped.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel’s eyes met mine.

“I think my father has been looking for that gift for five years.””
