Chapter 9

The jury deliberated four hours.

I sat in the courthouse cafeteria with Maya and Ray. I couldn't eat.

Delia came in. She was smiling.

"They have a verdict."

We walked back into the courtroom.

Nolan was already there. He looked gray.

The foreman stood.

"On the count of fraud, how do you find?"

"Guilty. In favor of the plaintiff."

"On the count of forgery?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of conversion of separate property?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of breach of fiduciary duty?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of dissipation of marital assets due to adultery?"

"Guilty."

Five counts. Five guilty.

The judge awarded me the house. Free and clear. The HELOC was voided.

Nolan was ordered to repay every dollar. Plus punitive damages.

Total: $418,000.

And because the forgery was criminal, the district attorney took the case.

Nolan was indicted on two felony counts.

He was arrested in the courtroom.

I watched them put handcuffs on him.

He looked at me. For the first time, there was no mask.

Just fear.

I didn't look away.
