Chapter 5: The File That Changed Everything

I stared at Daniel.

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The noise of the coffee shop disappeared.

The conversations around me.

The sound of cups touching tables.

The rain tapping against the window.

Everything faded.

There was only one sentence repeating in my head.

Nia isn’t the first child Claire tried to erase.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at the flash drive between us.

“It means Claire has done this before.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Not because I believed Claire.

Because some part of me was still fighting reality.

“She wouldn’t…”

Daniel didn’t interrupt.

He just watched me.

And somehow that was worse.

“You think I’m lying,” he said quietly.

“I think I need proof.””

“You deserve proof.””

He pushed the flash drive closer.

“That’s why I brought it.””

I picked it up.

It felt impossibly small for something that could destroy my entire life.

“What exactly is on here?””

Daniel looked down.

“Videos. Messages. Documents.””

“From when?””

“Before I lost my daughter.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t you show anyone?””

His expression changed.

Pain.

Anger.

Regret.

“I tried.””

He leaned back.

“I went to the police. I went to family court. I showed people messages where Claire manipulated my daughter. I showed them recordings where Claire twisted situations.””

“And?””

“They said it was a messy divorce.””

I looked away.

The answer hurt because it was familiar.

People always wanted simple stories.

A good person.

A bad person.

A clear victim.

But real life was usually hidden in the gray spaces.

“How did you find me?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Claire talked about you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She talked about me?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“At first, she said you were different.””

“Different how?””

“She said you were easier to control.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“She said you had one weakness.””

I already knew the answer.

“Nia.””

Daniel nodded.

“She said you would do anything to protect your daughter.””

I looked down.

“That’s not a weakness.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“It isn’t.””

He paused.

“But Claire saw it as one.””

My hands tightened around the flash drive.

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to go home.

I wanted to pretend the last twenty-four hours hadn’t happened.

But then I pictured Nia standing in that garden.

Her sleeve falling.

Her face changing.

The fear.

The silence.

And I knew I couldn’t walk away.

“What do I do now?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Watch the file.””

I didn’t go home immediately.

I sat in my car outside the house for almost an hour.

I watched the front door.

The place where I had built my life.

The place where I thought my family was safe.

Then I saw Claire through the window.

She was standing in the living room.

Waiting.

Watching.

I felt something inside me harden.

Not hatred.

Something colder.

Awareness.

I finally walked inside.

Claire looked up.

“Where were you?””

I ignored the question.

“Did you know Daniel contacted me?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You met him.””

It wasn’t a question.

I laughed quietly.

“You already knew.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“He’s manipulating you.””

“Why?””

“Because he wants revenge.””

“Revenge for what?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What happened to his daughter?””

Her expression froze.

“That’s not your business.””

My heart sank.

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Deflection.

“You’re telling me another child was involved, and I’m supposed to ignore that?””

“You don’t know the full story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Claire.””

She looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

The admission surprised me.

But not enough.

“What kind of mistakes?””

She sat down slowly.

“I was young.””

I stared at her.

“You’re talking about a child.””

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted any of this.””

I almost believed her.

Almost.

Because that was what Claire was good at.

Making people see the pain in her face before they saw the damage behind her actions.

“What happened to Daniel’s daughter?””

Claire whispered:

“She was difficult.””

My stomach turned.

“Difficult?””

“She hated me.””

“She was a child.””

“She blamed me for everything.””

“For what?””

Claire looked down.

And for the first time, she seemed genuinely broken.

“She blamed me for her mother leaving.””

I paused.

“What?””

Daniel had never mentioned that.

Claire continued.

“Her mother left before I met Daniel. She already had abandonment issues.””

“So you punished her for being hurt?””

“No.””

“You just grabbed my daughter because you were frustrated?””

Her face tightened.

“That was different.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

I stepped back.

“Where is Daniel’s daughter now?””

Claire looked toward the floor.

“She’s gone.””

The word hit me.

“Gone?””

“She left.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“Because of you?””

Claire’s silence was enough.

That night, after Nia fell asleep, I opened the flash drive.

I sat alone in my office.

The same room where I had signed marriage papers with Claire.

The same room where I had looked at photos and believed I had built a future.

The drive contained folders.

One was labeled:

*DANIEL CASE*

Another:

*MESSAGES*

Another:

*NIA*

My hand froze.

There was a folder with my daughter’s name.

I almost didn’t open it.

Then I remembered her asking:

Dad, do you believe me?

I clicked.

Inside were screenshots.

Texts between Claire and someone saved as “M.””

The first message was from months ago.

*She’s getting attached to Ethan.*

A reply came moments later.

*That’s the problem.*

My breathing slowed.

I kept reading.

*If she becomes his priority, we lose control.*

My hands shook.

Control.

That word again.

Then another message.

*I know how to handle her.*

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

But I did.

Because I needed the truth.

The next file was a video.

Recorded from a security camera.

The date was the night Nia got hurt.

I clicked play.

The image appeared.

My house.

My living room.

Nia standing near the doorway.

She looked smaller than usual.

Scared.

Claire was in front of her.

At first, I heard nothing.

Then the audio started.

Claire’s voice.

“You always do this.””

Nia’s voice was quiet.

“Do what?””

“Make him choose you.””

My stomach twisted.

“I’m not trying to.””

“Stop pretending.””

Nia looked down.

“I just wanted Dad.””

The video shook slightly.

Then Claire stepped closer.

“Your father doesn’t need you controlling everything.””

“I don’t control anything.””

“Don’t talk back.””

The image froze for a second.

Then continued.

Nia backed away.

“I want to call Dad.””

Claire grabbed her arm.

Hard.

I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.

“No.””

I watched the screen.

I watched my daughter’s face.

The fear.

The shock.

Then Claire let go.

Nia held her shoulder.

And that was the moment.

The moment.

The bruise happened.

But then something else happened.

A sound came from outside the camera’s view.

A man’s voice.

“Claire!””

She turned.

Daniel.

The camera didn’t show his face.

But his voice was clear.

“What are you doing?””

Claire stepped away from Nia.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“I knew you were doing this again.””

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

Again.

Again.

That word echoed.

Again.

I opened the next file.

A document.

A court report.

The name at the top:

*Brooks Family Custody Investigation*

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then I saw the photograph attached.

A little girl.

Around the same age Nia was when Claire entered our lives.

Below the photo was a name.

*Lily Brooks.*

And beneath it, one sentence from a witness statement.

I read it twice because I couldn’t believe it.

*“Lily said Claire told her that if she disappeared, everyone would finally be happier.””*

My hands went cold.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

The message contained only five words.

*You opened the Lily files.*

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*Now she knows you know.*

I slowly turned toward the office door.

Because it was slightly open.

And I was certain I had closed it.

Then I heard footsteps in the hallway.

Someone was standing outside.

Someone who had been listening.

I whispered:

“Who’s there?””

The footsteps stopped.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then a voice answered.

A voice I recognized.

Not Claire’s.

Not Daniel’s.

My daughter’s.

“Dad…”

I rushed to the door.

Nia was standing there, pale and shaking.

She held something in her hand.

Something old.

Something I had never seen before.

A photograph.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

She looked at it.

Then at me.

“I found it in Claire’s room.””

My heart stopped.

“What is it?””

Nia slowly handed it to me.

I looked down.

And I saw a picture of Claire standing beside a little girl.

Lily.

But on the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

A date from before Claire ever met me.

May you like

And underneath it were six words that made my blood run cold.

*She wasn’t her first victim.*
