Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was There When My Father Died

The photograph appeared on the screen.

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody needed to.

We all saw the same thing.

The hospital hallway.

Twelve years earlier.

A younger version of the same building.

A security camera angle from above.

And standing near my father’s hospital room…

Celeste Morgan.

My mind struggled to process it.

Celeste.

The woman I hired to protect my mother.

The woman who claimed she barely knew our family.

The woman who appeared in our lives three weeks ago.

She had been there twelve years ago.

The night my father died.

I looked at her.

She didn’t look surprised.

That was the worst part.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for us to discover the truth.

My mother slowly turned toward her.

“Who are you?””

Celeste didn’t answer.

“Who are you?”” my mother repeated.

Her voice cracked.

Because this wasn’t just betrayal anymore.

It was something deeper.

A stranger had entered our family twice.

Once when my father was dying.

And once when my mother was vulnerable.

Celeste looked down.

Then she finally spoke.

“My name wasn’t always Celeste Morgan.””

The room went still.

Rachel immediately became alert.

“What does that mean?””

Celeste looked at the photo.

“It means I changed my name.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I needed to disappear.””

Daniel suddenly looked angry.

“You never told me this.””

Celeste turned toward him.

“You never asked.””

“You said you had experience.””

“I did.””

“You said you were recommended.””

“I was.””

Daniel stared at her.

“By who?””

Celeste didn’t answer.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Let’s start from the beginning.””

Celeste looked at her.

“Fine.””

She took a slow breath.

“My real name is Claire Whitmore.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to my mother.

Her face changed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Mom?””

My mother stared at Celeste.

Or Claire.

“No.””

Her voice became softer.

“You’re his daughter.””

My blood froze.

Celeste looked away.

Rachel frowned.

“Whose daughter?””

My mother didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Because she was staring at the woman who had spent weeks manipulating her.

The woman who had been standing beside her bed.

The woman who knew more about our family than she should.

Finally, Celeste spoke.

“Thomas Carter.””

The room became silent.

My father.

The word felt impossible.

“My father?””

Celeste nodded.

“I’m his daughter.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped back.

“You’re saying my father had another child?””

My mother closed her eyes.

Pain crossed her face.

Not surprise.

Pain.

That told me everything.

“You knew?””

I looked at her.

“Mom?””

She opened her eyes.

“Not everything.””

My voice broke.

“But you knew something.””

She swallowed.

“Your father told me.””

The room felt smaller.

“When?””

“Near the end.””

I stared at her.

“And you never told me?””

She looked devastated.

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed quietly.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protecting.

Protecting.

Protecting.

But every secret they hid became another wound.

“How?””

My mother looked at Celeste.

“Thomas discovered Claire’s existence shortly before he became sick.””

Celeste nodded.

“My mother contacted him.””

“Who was your mother?””

Celeste looked down.

“Rebecca Whitmore.””

The name meant nothing.

But my mother reacted.

“She worked with your father.””

Rachel looked confused.

“Worked with him?””

My mother nodded.

“Years ago.””

Celeste spoke quietly.

“My mother and Thomas had a relationship before he met Evelyn.””

My heart sank.

My father.

The man I believed I knew completely.

Suddenly had a hidden life.

A hidden daughter.

A hidden history.

But then I remembered the photo.

And the question that mattered.

“Why were you at the hospital?””

Celeste looked at me.

“Because my father asked me to be there.””

My mother whispered:

“What?””

Celeste looked at her.

“He knew he was dying.””

Nobody moved.

“He knew someone was watching him.””

Rachel looked at the video still paused on the screen.

“The account access.””

Celeste nodded.

“Thomas believed someone close to him was trying to take control of his assets.””

Daniel immediately said:

“I didn’t kill him.””

Everyone turned.

The words came out too quickly.

Too naturally.

A terrible silence followed.

Daniel’s face changed.

“I mean…”

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody had accused him.

Rachel watched him carefully.

“Why did you say that?””

Daniel looked away.

“I knew what you were thinking.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice was calm.

“I don’t think we know enough yet.””

My mother looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about Claire?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

He rubbed his face.

“Yes.””

The betrayal felt endless.

“How long?””

“Since Dad’s funeral.””

I felt sick.

“You knew I had a sister?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Half-sister.””

I flinched.

The correction hurt.

Because even now, he couldn’t say it simply.

“She’s still his daughter.””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because Dad didn’t want you to know.””

Celeste looked at him.

“That’s a lie.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“I was.””

The room went silent.

Celeste stepped closer.

“My father wanted Emily to know.””

My mother looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell her?””

Celeste’s expression changed.

For the first time, I saw real pain.

“Because I was angry.””

Nobody expected that answer.

“Angry?””

She nodded.

“I spent my entire life knowing I was a secret.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Then I watched him build a family with you.””

My heart softened slightly.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I understood the pain.

But pain didn’t erase choices.

“And that’s why you helped Daniel?””

Her face fell.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I wanted answers.””

“What answers?””

She looked at my mother.

“I wanted to know why he hid me.””

My mother looked broken.

“Thomas loved you.””

Celeste laughed sadly.

“Then why did he leave me?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

Celeste continued.

“When Daniel contacted me, he knew exactly who I was.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you used her.””

His silence confirmed it.

Celeste nodded.

“He promised he would help me find the truth about my father’s death.””

Rachel looked at her.

“And instead?””

“He used me to build a case against Evelyn.””

My mother looked away.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Then Rachel asked the question everyone was avoiding.

“What happened the night Thomas Carter died?””

Celeste looked at the photo.

“I arrived because he called me.””

My heart raced.

“He called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He said he had found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Celeste looked at Daniel.

“Someone had been trying to change his estate documents.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

Celeste continued.

“He told me not to trust anyone.””

My mother whispered:

“Not even me?””

Celeste looked at her.

“No.””

That hurt.

But then she added:

“Because he didn’t know who had access.””

Rachel asked:

“Did you see anyone else that night?””

Celeste went silent.

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

And I knew before she said it.

Because her face told me.

“It was your father’s doctor.””

Rachel frowned.

“Doctor?””

Celeste nodded.

“The doctor came out of his room minutes before Thomas stopped breathing.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“But the doctor said—”

“I know what he said.””

Celeste’s voice became cold.

“He said Thomas’s heart failed.””

The room froze.

“And you don’t believe that?””

Celeste looked at the photo.

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because your father was awake when I left.””

Nobody breathed.

My father.

Alive.

Awake.

After the time everyone believed he had already been dying.

Rachel immediately pulled out her phone.

“We need medical records.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“After twelve years?””

Celeste nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because Thomas left one more message.””

My mother stared.

“What message?””

Celeste reached into her bag.

This time, she didn’t look confident.

She looked afraid.

She pulled out a small old envelope.

Yellowed with age.

“I was supposed to give this to Emily when she discovered the truth.””

My hands shook.

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was never sure whether I was protecting you…”

A pause.

“Or protecting the person who killed him.””

Nobody moved.

I took the envelope.

My father’s handwriting was on the front.

My name.

*Emily.*

I opened it slowly.

Inside was one page.

Only one sentence was written.

And when I read it, the entire room changed.

*“The person who caused my death is not the person you suspect.””*

Below it was another line.

A name.

A name that made my mother gasp.

A name that made Daniel take a step backward.

May you like

A name I never expected.

*Evelyn Carter.*
