Chapter 6: The Secret Celeste Was Paid To Hide
Celeste didn’t run.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Most people, when caught, reacted with panic.
They denied.
They shouted.
They tried to escape.
But Celeste simply stood there.
Quiet.
Almost disappointed.
Like she had expected this moment to come eventually.
Rachel looked at her.
“Did you alter the recording?””
Celeste’s eyes moved toward the device in my mother’s hand.
Then toward Daniel.
For a brief second, I saw something I had not seen before.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Regret.
But it disappeared quickly.
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Rachel raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
“No. I didn’t alter anything.””
My mother gave a tired laugh.
“You expect us to believe that?””
Celeste looked at her.
“I expect you to believe the truth.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“The truth?””
I stepped closer.
“You lied about my mother being confused.””
“I reported what I observed.””
“You manipulated her.””
“No.””
“You recorded her without telling her.””
“For her safety.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“For her safety?””
Celeste’s expression remained calm.
“Yes.””
She looked around the room.
“Everyone here wants a simple villain.””
Her eyes stopped on Daniel.
“But the truth is more complicated.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you doing?””
She ignored him.
I noticed something then.
The way she looked at him.
Not like a partner.
Like someone she blamed.
“You said you would handle it.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“I did.””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“You failed.””
The room changed.
Because suddenly, Daniel wasn’t controlling her.
She was angry at him.
Rachel noticed too.
“Mr. Carter, Ms. Morgan, I suggest both of you be careful with what you say.””
Celeste smiled faintly.
“Why?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Because every word matters.””
Celeste looked at my mother.
“Then maybe everyone should hear everything.””
My mother stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Celeste reached into her bag.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Everyone looked at him.
Again.
That single word.
That panic.
It told us more than any confession could.
Celeste pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept a copy.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What did you do?””
She looked at him.
“What you should have done.””
My heart started pounding.
Rachel held out her hand.
“What’s inside?””
Celeste walked forward and handed her the envelope.
“Documents.””
Rachel opened it carefully.
She pulled out several pages.
Her eyes moved across the first one.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Her expression became more serious with every line.
“What are these?””
I asked.
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Daniel.
“These are payments.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Rachel held up a page.
“Multiple transfers.””
My mother looked at me.
“What payments?””
Rachel turned the paper.
“Payments from Daniel Carter to Celeste Morgan.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my brother.
He looked trapped.
“It’s not what you think.””
I almost laughed.
“That sentence should be illegal in situations like this.””
Daniel ignored me.
“Those were consulting fees.””
Rachel looked at him.
“For what service?””
He hesitated.
“Care assistance.””
Celeste laughed.
A cold laugh.
“Care assistance?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Stop.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
Nobody answered.
But she continued anyway.
“I wasn’t hired because your mother needed a caregiver.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
Celeste looked at Daniel.
“I was hired because he needed someone inside the house.””
My brother looked away.
My mother closed her eyes.
Like she already knew.
I turned toward Daniel.
“You used her.””
He didn’t respond.
“You put someone in Mom’s home to watch her.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“What was it like?””
Daniel’s silence was enough.
Celeste continued.
“He wanted information.””
Rachel looked at the documents.
“Information about what?””
Celeste smiled.
“About her health.””
“Why?””
She looked at my mother.
“Because he needed proof that she wasn’t capable.””
My hands curled into fists.
“So the plan was to make her look sick.””
Celeste didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
He stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
His voice became louder.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
My mother looked at him.
“You wanted a court to take away my rights.””
“Because I thought you needed help.””
“You thought?””
Daniel’s face became emotional.
“Yes.””
For the first time, he looked less like a criminal and more like a desperate man defending himself.
“I watched you struggle.””
My mother’s expression softened slightly.
“I struggled because I was grieving.””
Daniel looked at her.
“After Dad died, you became obsessed with proving you were fine.””
“Because I had to be.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Because you never let anyone help you.””
The room became quiet.
There it was.
The real wound.
Not money.
Not paperwork.
Something deeper.
Daniel looked at her.
“You pushed me away.””
My mother stared at him.
“You stopped visiting because I wouldn’t sign your papers.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you come every time with documents?””
He had no answer.
I watched my brother.
And for a moment, I felt something complicated.
Anger.
Sadness.
Disappointment.
Because somewhere beneath all of this was still my little brother.
The person I loved.
But love didn’t erase what he did.
Rachel looked at Celeste.
“You said you kept copies. Why?””
Celeste looked down.
“Because I realized I was being used.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You’re blaming me?””
“Yes.””
“You agreed.””
“I was paid.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
She didn’t even try to deny it.
“You knowingly participated.””
“Yes.””
Rachel nodded.
“Then why expose him now?””
Celeste looked at my mother.
“Because she figured it out.””
My mother didn’t respond.
Celeste continued.
“Mrs. Carter stopped taking the medication I was giving her.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
My mother looked at me.
“I wasn’t sure what was happening.””
Celeste immediately corrected.
“It was prescribed medication.””
“Prescribed by who?”” Rachel asked.
Celeste hesitated.
“Her doctor.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“He changed it.””
She pointed at Daniel.
“Daniel asked the doctor to adjust my medication.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“That was for your recovery.””
My mother looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“You wanted me tired.””
The accusation hung there.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“Did you request medication changes?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I discussed concerns.””
“That is not an answer.””
He said nothing.
My mother looked at Celeste.
“And you helped him.””
Celeste looked away.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
All those days when Mom sounded tired on the phone.
All those times I thought she was losing herself.
They had been creating the image they needed.
A weak woman.
A confused woman.
A woman who needed someone else to speak for her.
Rachel gathered the documents.
“This changes the guardianship review.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Rachel.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“You submitted evidence claiming incapacity while withholding information about your involvement.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“This is a family matter.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“This became a legal matter when you filed.””
Silence.
Then Celeste spoke quietly.
“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””
Everyone looked at her.
My mother’s expression changed.
“What?””
Celeste looked at Daniel.
“You never told her, did you?””
Daniel froze.
“Don’t.””
Rachel noticed.
“Told her what?””
Celeste took a breath.
“The reason he needed guardianship approved so quickly.””
My heart started beating faster.
I looked at Daniel.
“What reason?””
He didn’t answer.
Celeste smiled sadly.
“Because he was running out of time.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked angry.
“Enough.””
But Celeste continued.
“Daniel wasn’t just trying to get control of your mother’s money.””
She looked at me.
“He was trying to stop someone else from taking everything first.””
The room became silent.
I looked at my brother.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel looked away.
And that scared me.
Because I had never seen him look ashamed before.
My mother whispered:
“Emily…”
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“There’s something about your father’s estate that you were never told.””
My heart stopped.
“My father’s estate?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
The secret was finally coming out.
My mother reached for the envelope Rachel was holding.
Inside was one more document.
A document nobody had noticed.
She pulled it out.
And when I saw the name written at the top…
I forgot how to breathe.
Because it wasn’t Daniel’s name.
It wasn’t my mother’s.
It was mine.
*Emily Carter.*
May you like
And underneath my name was a sentence that changed everything.
*Primary beneficiary of the Carter family trust.*
