Chapter 6

The first court hearing happened when Noah was ten days old.
I wore loose black pants and moved like my body was still negotiating with gravity.
Dana offered to request remote testimony.
I refused.
Evelyn wanted me invisible.
I would not give her that.
The courtroom was packed.
Evelyn wore navy.
Richard wore gray.
They looked respectable.
That was the most dangerous thing about them.
Respectable people can do terrible things and still be handed sympathy at the door.
The prosecutor presented the forged signature.
The hospital admission form.
The security footage.
The prayer room lock.
The fake social worker complaint.
The baby transfer request.
Evelyn’s attorney called it “overprotective family intervention.”
I nearly laughed.
Dana whispered, “Don’t react.”
I whispered back, “No promises.”
Dr. Martin testified.
He looked straight at the judge.
“In twenty-eight years of obstetrics, I have never seen anyone attempt to force a postpartum patient to sign away parental rights minutes after delivery.”
Evelyn looked offended.
Not ashamed.
Caleb testified next.
His voice broke when he described hearing the lock click behind him.
“I thought my wife was resting,” he said. “I didn’t know my mother was in the room with papers.”
The prosecutor asked, “Did you sign those documents?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize your mother to obtain custody of your child?”
“No.”
“Did you want your wife separated from your newborn son?”
Caleb looked at me.
Tears filled his eyes.
“Never.”
Then it was my turn.
I walked to the stand slowly.
Every eye followed.
I told the truth.
The labor.
The exhaustion.
The papers.
The forged signature.
The threat.
Sign now or you will never see him again.
Evelyn finally looked at me.
Cold.
Still certain.
The defense attorney stood.
“Mrs. Whitmore, isn’t it true you come from a financially unstable background?”
“Yes.”
“And isn’t it true the Whitmore family has resources you do not?”
“Yes.”
“Then isn’t it possible Evelyn was trying to protect the child?”
I leaned toward the microphone.
“From his mother?”
The courtroom went silent.
The attorney tried again.
“You threw a pen at my client.”
“Yes.”
“Violently.”
“She was stealing my baby.”
Dana lowered her head to hide a smile.
The judge granted emergency protective orders.
Evelyn and Richard were barred from contact.
Criminal proceedings continued.
Noah stayed with me and Caleb.
When the ruling came, my knees nearly gave out.
May you like
Caleb caught me.
For the first time in days, I let him.
