Chapter 4

Evelyn was banned from the hospital.

Richard was banned too.

But rich people do not need doors when they have phones.

The calls started that night.

Unknown numbers.

Blocked numbers.

Nurses receiving “family instructions.”

A fake pediatric transfer request.

A social worker who arrived with incomplete paperwork and too much confidence.

Dana stopped her at the door.

“Who sent you?”

The woman hesitated.

“An anonymous concern was filed.”

“By whom?”

“I can’t disclose that.”

Dana held up the forged forms.

“Then you can wait with the police.”

The woman left quickly.

By morning, Dana had filed emergency protection orders.

The hospital locked down my room.

Noah’s ankle monitor was checked every hour.

Caleb slept in a chair beside my bed with one hand on the bassinet.

I watched him.

His face was drawn.

His cheek still marked from whatever happened when he fought his way out of that prayer room.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“You keep saying that.”

“I keep meaning it.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“But?”

“But sorry is not safety.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

I loved him.

That made everything harder.

Because love does not erase the years I spent begging him to see what his mother was doing.

Love does not erase holidays where I cried in bathrooms.

Love does not erase him saying, “That’s just how she is.”

That sentence had been the first lock on the door.

Dana came back with hospital footage.

Evelyn entering my room.

Richard’s assistant handing her the documents.

A nurse stopping Caleb in the hallway.

Evelyn leading Caleb away.

Then later, Richard’s driver closing the prayer room door from the outside.

Caleb watched the clip in silence.

His hands shook.

“My own father locked me away from my son’s birth.”

Dana nodded.

“And that proves intent.”

That afternoon, Evelyn tried one more time.

A luxury gift basket arrived.

Inside were baby blankets.

Silver rattles.

A card.

For Noah Whitmore. May he be raised properly.

Caleb threw the card into the trash.

Then called his parents on speaker with Dana recording.

Evelyn answered.

“Have you come to your senses?”

Caleb’s voice was cold.

“I am filing criminal charges.”

Silence.

Then Richard came on the line.

“You ungrateful boy.”

“No,” Caleb said. “I’m a father now.”

Evelyn whispered, “That girl will ruin you.”

May you like

Caleb looked at me.

“No. She gave me the only family in this room worth protecting.”
