Chapter 8: The Person Behind My Mother-In-Law’s Plan
The words sat between us.
*She was trying to pay someone else.*
I stared at Michael.
For once, he didn’t look like someone trying to defend himself.
He looked terrified.
“Who?”” I asked.
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked down at the messages again.
Linda’s words were still burned into my mind.
*The first wife failed. This one has money. We won’t make the same mistake twice.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
“She was planning this.””
Michael didn’t respond.
“Before we even got married.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to say that like you’re discovering this with me.””
His eyes lowered.
“I didn’t know how far it went.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
For the first time, he didn’t argue.
That almost made it worse.
Because now I could see something I hadn’t allowed myself to see before.
Michael wasn’t just a victim of his mother.
He was someone who benefited from her actions.
Maybe he didn’t create the plan.
But he allowed it.
And that mattered.
I placed the papers back on the table.
“Where is Linda?””
Michael looked toward the stairs.
“She left after you went to the lawyer.””
“Did she say where?””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Did you ask?””
He hesitated.
And I knew.
“You didn’t.””
Michael rubbed his face.
“I needed time to think.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone in this family always needs time.””
A pause.
“But nobody ever gives me the truth.””
He looked hurt.
“I’m trying.””
I stared at him.
“Trying would have been telling me before I found out.””
He had no answer.
That evening, Robert came over.
Michael had called him after we discovered the messages.
The moment Robert saw the papers on the table, his face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You’ve seen these before.””
It wasn’t a question.
Robert slowly sat down.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“Of course you have.””
“Sarah—”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“I’m tired of finding out everyone knew something.””
Robert looked down.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You might understand the situation.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“But you don’t understand what it feels like to realize every person around you was making decisions about your life without you.””
Robert accepted that.
Because he knew he was guilty.
“I found out about Linda’s plan six months ago.””
Michael looked shocked.
“What?””
Robert looked at his son.
“I suspected something was wrong.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Robert’s expression hardened.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Michael stared.
“Of me?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Robert took a breath.
“I spent years protecting you from consequences. I thought I was helping my son.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“But I was helping him avoid becoming a better man.””
Michael looked away.
The room became quiet.
Robert continued.
“When I found those messages, I confronted Linda.””
“What did she say?”” I asked.
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“She said she was doing what she had to do.””
I felt a chill.
“She admitted it?””
“Yes.””
“What exactly was she doing?””
Robert looked at Michael.
Then me.
“She owed someone money.””
I leaned forward.
“Who?””
Robert shook his head.
“She wouldn’t tell me.””
“But you know.””
“I know who.””
Everyone went silent.
“Who?””
Robert looked at the papers.
Then whispered:
“Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Michael’s face changed instantly.
“You know him?””
I turned toward him.
Michael looked pale.
“I’ve heard the name.””
“From where?””
He swallowed.
“From my business.””
Robert nodded.
“Victor was one of the people Michael borrowed money from.””
My heart sank.
“Your debt.””
Michael nodded.
“But I thought that was over.””
Robert looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your mother paid him.””
Michael froze.
“How?””
Robert looked at me.
“With Sarah’s money.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
“So all of this…”
I looked at the papers.
“The debt.””
I looked at Michael.
“The payments.””
I looked at Robert.
“The inheritance.””
I took a breath.
“It was all connected.””
Nobody denied it.
The next day, I searched for Victor Hale.
Not because I wanted confrontation.
Because I needed answers.
I needed to know how deep this went.
Rachel, my lawyer, helped me understand the documents and recommended someone who could investigate the financial records.
By the afternoon, we discovered something unexpected.
Victor wasn’t just a person Michael owed money to.
He was connected to Linda.
A business partner.
A secret arrangement.
A relationship nobody had told me about.
Rachel placed the documents in front of me.
“Sarah, there’s something strange here.””
“What?””
“Linda wasn’t only paying Michael’s debt.””
I looked up.
“What else?””
“She was making regular payments to a company.””
“Whose company?””
Rachel turned the page.
I saw the name.
*Hale Financial Group.*
My stomach tightened.
“Victor.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Rachel hesitated.
“More than the debt.””
I stared at her.
“How much more?””
She pushed the document toward me.
The numbers made my breath stop.
Hundreds of thousands.
Not from my inheritance.
Not yet.
From somewhere else.
“Where did she get this money?””
Rachel looked serious.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
That night, Michael came to my apartment.
I almost didn’t open the door.
But when I saw his face through the window, I stopped.
He looked different.
Broken.
Not the dramatic kind.
The kind where someone finally understands the damage they caused.
“I need to tell you something.””
I kept the door halfway closed.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“Emily wasn’t the only person my mother tried to control.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
He looked down.
“Before Emily, there was another woman.””
My heart sank.
“Another?””
Michael nodded.
“My mother had been doing this for years.””
“Finding women?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Finding solutions.””
I didn’t understand.
“Explain.””
Michael looked ashamed.
“She always believed marriage was a transaction.””
The words were disgusting.
“She looked at people and saw what they could provide.””
I crossed my arms.
“And me?””
He looked at me.
“You were supposed to be the perfect solution.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Because of my inheritance.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But there’s something else.””
“What?””
Michael reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this hidden with the other documents.””
He handed it to me.
I looked at the handwriting.
It was Linda’s.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not to me.
To Victor.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Victor,*
*I have found the next opportunity. Her inheritance is larger than expected.*
I kept reading.
My hands trembled.
*Michael is willing to cooperate this time. He understands what is at stake.*
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked up.
“Cooperate?””
Michael’s face went pale.
“I swear I didn’t know about that letter.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I do.””
I looked back down.
The final paragraph was worse.
*Once Sarah transfers control of the account, we can finally settle what we owe you.*
I stared at the words.
Control of the account.
Not money.
Control.
They didn’t just want access.
They wanted ownership.
I looked at Michael.
“Did you ever ask me why my mother put restrictions on my inheritance?””
He froze.
“No.””
“Why?””
He looked confused.
“Because I never cared.””
The honesty was brutal.
I nodded slowly.
“Exactly.””
I folded the letter.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Calm.
Confident.
“You’re Sarah, correct?””
I said nothing.
The man continued.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
Michael immediately stepped closer.
I put the phone on speaker.
Victor laughed softly.
“I assume you’ve found the documents.””
My blood ran cold.
“You know who I am?””
“Of course.””
A pause.
“Your family has been discussing you for months.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“My family?””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“Your husband’s family.””
I looked at Michael.
Victor continued.
“You should understand something, Sarah.””
“What?””
“Your mother-in-law didn’t create this plan because she hated you.””
A pause.
“She created it because she was desperate.””
I frowned.
“Desperate for what?””
Victor’s answer made the room freeze.
“Because if she doesn’t pay me back soon…”
A pause.
“Your father-in-law loses everything.””
I looked at Robert.
Except he wasn’t there.
Victor continued.
“And Sarah?””
“Yes?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
My stomach tightened.
“What question should I ask?””
May you like
His voice became colder.
“Ask why your father-in-law’s name is already on the debt agreement.””
