Chapter 6: The Money They Thought I Would Never Protect

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

*She has the inheritance. Once they are married, we finally have access to the money.*

The words didn’t feel like they belonged to my life.

Inheritance.

Money.

Access.

Those weren’t words I associated with my marriage.

Not with Michael.

Not with the woman who called me “family” while secretly counting what I could provide.

I slowly lowered the paper.

The room felt different.

The walls.

The furniture.

The Christmas decorations that had looked warm only hours ago.

Everything suddenly looked like a stage.

A performance I had unknowingly been part of.

I looked at Michael.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

His face was pale.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I’m asking you one question.””

I held up the email.

“Tell me this isn’t real.””

Michael opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence was the final answer.

I nodded slowly.

“Wow.””

A strange calm came over me.

Not because I was okay.

Because I had finally reached the point where there was nothing left to deny.

“You knew.””

Michael stepped forward.

“I knew about the email.””

I stared at him.

“Not the money?””

He looked away.

That was all I needed.

“You knew your mother chose me because of my inheritance.””

“Sarah, listen—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“You don’t get to say that.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I never wanted your money.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me your mother was interested in my finances?””

Silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Emily?””

Silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the debt?””

Every question made him look smaller.

Not because I was attacking him.

Because the truth was finally standing in the room.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know if you know what love is anymore.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But for the first time, I didn’t rush to comfort him.

Because I had spent too long protecting his feelings while mine were being destroyed.

The front door suddenly opened.

Linda walked inside.

She stopped when she saw the papers in my hand.

Her face changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You found it.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She closed the door behind her.

“Sarah—”

“You knew.””

Her expression hardened.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

After everything.

After all the lies.

She finally admitted something.

I laughed softly.

“You don’t even look sorry.””

Linda placed her purse on the table.

“I’m sorry things happened this way.””

“That’s not an apology.””

She looked annoyed.

“You’re emotional.””

I stared at her.

There it was.

Again.

“You always do that.””

“What?””

“You make me seem irrational whenever I react to something horrible you did.””

Linda sighed.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“No.””

I looked at the email.

“I understand perfectly.””

She stepped closer.

“Michael had problems.””

“And?””

“And you could help.””

I blinked.

The way she said it was terrifying.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Like it was obvious.

Like my money was a solution waiting for them.

“You mean I could be used.””

Linda’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t be dramatic.””

I almost smiled.

“Dramatic.””

I nodded.

“That’s your favorite word.””

Michael stepped between us.

“Mom, stop.””

Linda looked at him.

“You’re defending her now?””

“No.””

Michael sounded exhausted.

“I’m saying this has gone too far.””

I stared at him.

The irony almost made me laugh.

Now.

Now he had found his voice.

After years of silence.

Linda looked at him.

“Do you know what she’s doing?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“She’s destroying this family.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“You destroyed this family when you decided I was a bank account before you decided I was a person.””

Linda’s face turned red.

“You should be grateful.””

I froze.

“What?””

She crossed her arms.

“Do you think Michael would have married you if I hadn’t encouraged him?””

The room went silent.

Even Michael looked shocked.

“Mom.””

But Linda continued.

“You were lonely. He was lonely. You both needed something.””

Something.

Not someone.

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Because that was the first time she had said it out loud.

I wasn’t a wife to them.

I was an arrangement.

I picked up my bag.

“I’m leaving.””

Michael immediately grabbed my arm.

Not hard.

But enough.

“Sarah, wait.””

I looked down at his hand.

He released me immediately.

“I need you to hear me.””

I looked at him.

“I’ve heard enough.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I know I messed up.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

He wiped his face.

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I shook my head.

“Michael, everyone is scared.””

A pause.

“But not everyone lies to the person they claim to love.””

He looked devastated.

“I can fix this.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

He had no answer.

“How do you fix two years of lies?””

Silence.

“How do you fix me finding out your mother married me for my money?””

Silence.

“How do you fix me realizing your father knew more about your life than I did?””

His eyes dropped.

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Robert walked into the room.

I hadn’t noticed him standing in the hallway.

He looked at his son.

“Michael.””

Michael looked up.

Robert’s expression was filled with disappointment.

“She’s right.””

Michael looked away.

“I know.””

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“You don’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

Robert stepped closer.

“You’re sorry because you got caught.””

Michael flinched.

“That’s not fair.””

Robert’s voice stayed steady.

“Isn’t it?””

The question hung there.

“You had years to tell her.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Michael said nothing.

Robert nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at Robert.

Despite everything, I felt a strange sadness.

Because he had known.

He had known and stayed quiet.

“You knew too.””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

“Why?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone in this family is afraid.””

I shook my head.

“And somehow I’m the only one who paid the price.””

Robert accepted that.

Because he knew he couldn’t argue.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” Michael asked.

Robert didn’t answer.

He walked away from us and answered.

“Hello?””

A pause.

Then his expression became serious.

“Yes, this is Robert Carter.””

Another pause.

His eyes moved toward me.

And I knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He covered the phone.

“Sarah…”

The way he said my name made my stomach tighten.

“What?””

Robert looked at Michael.

Then Linda.

Then back at me.

“The bank contacted me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because someone attempted to access the inheritance account.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Robert lowered the phone.

“The account your mother left you.””

I felt frozen.

Nobody knew about that account.

Nobody.

Not Michael.

Not Linda.

Not anyone in his family.

Except…

I looked at the email.

My hands began to shake.

“Wait.””

I looked at Michael.

“How did your mother know?””

Nobody answered.

Then Robert spoke quietly.

“Sarah…”

He looked terrified.

“Someone didn’t just find out about your inheritance.””

A pause.

“They already tried to take it.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Robert looked at Linda.

And Linda’s face turned completely pale.

Because she knew.

And before she could say a word, Robert finished the sentence.

“The person who attempted the transfer…”

May you like

He took a breath.

“Used Michael’s name.””
