Chapter 9: The Secret She Thought Would Break Us

I read Linda’s message three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I couldn’t understand why she still believed she had power over us.

After everything.

After the birthday.

After the messages.

After the folder.

After admitting she had spent years trying to destroy my marriage.

She still believed there was one final thing she could reveal.

One final weapon.

I looked at David.

“What does she know?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

His voice sounded different.

Not afraid.

Just exhausted.

For years, Linda had been a shadow over our marriage.

A voice in the background.

A person we constantly tried to keep happy.

And now, after everything came out, she was still trying to pull us back into the same cycle.

Fear.

Doubt.

Guilt.

But this time, something was different.

We weren’t alone anymore.

The next morning, David received an email.

No message.

No explanation.

Just one attachment.

A video file.

The subject line said:

*The truth Sarah never told you.*

My stomach dropped.

David stared at the screen.

“She’s really doing this.””

I sat beside him.

“Open it.””

He looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

No.

I wasn’t sure.

I was terrified.

But after fourteen years of secrets, I was tired of being afraid of what someone else might say about me.

“Yes.””

He opened the file.

The video began.

It showed a room I recognized.

Linda’s living room.

The camera angle was strange.

Hidden.

Then Linda appeared on screen.

Talking to someone.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

I immediately felt uncomfortable.

Because I knew this was exactly what Linda did.

She collected things.

Recorded things.

Saved things.

Linda on the screen said:

“I’m telling you, something is wrong.””

The other woman asked:

“What do you mean?””

Linda leaned forward.

“Sarah isn’t who everyone thinks she is.””

My hands tightened.

Not again.

The woman asked:

“Do you have proof?””

Linda smiled.

And that smile made my stomach turn.

“I have enough.””

The video continued.

She talked about me.

About my personality.

About my marriage.

About how she believed David was trapped.

But then something happened.

Something I didn’t expect.

The woman across from her interrupted.

“Linda, you don’t have proof. You just don’t like her.””

Linda’s face changed.

“I know my son.””

“No,” the woman replied.

“You know how you feel.””

The video ended.

David and I sat silently.

I looked at him.

“That was it?””

He nodded slowly.

“That was supposed to destroy us?””

A strange laugh escaped me.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything, it was almost sad.

Linda had spent years searching for evidence.

And all she had was her own resentment.

But then David noticed something.

“Wait.””

He rewound the video.

“What?””

He paused near the beginning.

There was a small sound.

A voice in the background.

Someone else.

David increased the volume.

A few seconds later, we heard it.

A man’s voice.

Not Linda.

Someone else.

“Linda, you need to stop.””

David looked at me.

“Who is that?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

He replayed it again.

The voice sounded familiar.

Then David suddenly went still.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked at the screen.

“That’s my dad.””

I froze.

His father had passed away five years earlier.

“What?””

“That’s my father’s voice.””

We watched again.

The conversation was different now.

Because hidden behind Linda’s words was something else.

Her husband.

The man who had always stayed quiet.

The man who, even when he was alive, rarely challenged Linda.

But in that recording, he was different.

He sounded tired.

“Linda, this has gone too far.””

She responded:

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“You’re taking her side?””

“I’m taking the truth’s side.””

I felt a chill.

Because suddenly, there was another person who had seen it.

Someone who had known.

Someone who had been there.

David leaned back.

“My dad knew.””

I touched his arm.

“Apparently.””

He looked devastated.

Not because his father had done something wrong.

Because he realized his father had tried to stop Linda.

And failed.

We spent the next few hours going through everything.

The documents.

The messages.

The timeline.

And slowly, a picture formed.

Linda’s behavior had escalated after one specific moment.

The birth of our first child.

That was when David’s life changed.

That was when his priorities changed.

That was when Linda started saying I had “taken him away.””

But the truth was simpler.

He became a husband.

Then a father.

He grew up.

And she couldn’t accept it.

That evening, David called Linda.

I expected anger.

I expected yelling.

But he sounded calm.

“Mom.””

A pause.

“I saw the video.””

Silence.

Then:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

My eyes widened.

David looked at me.

“What?””

Linda continued.

“I deleted it.””

David frowned.

“You knew about it?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you send me something with Dad in it?””

Another silence.

Then Linda said:

“Because I thought you would understand.””

David closed his eyes.

“Understand what?””

“That I was right.””

His voice became softer.

“Mom.””

“No, listen.””

She sounded desperate now.

“Your father never understood.””

“Because he disagreed with you?””

“Because he was weak.””

I felt sick.

David stood up.

“You’re saying Dad was weak because he told you to stop hurting my wife?””

“He didn’t know everything.””

“No.””

David shook his head.

“He knew enough.””

Linda became quiet.

Then she said:

“Fine.””

The word sounded dangerous.

“Maybe you don’t want the truth.””

“What truth?””

The pause was long.

Too long.

Then:

“The reason Sarah is still with you.””

My body went still.

David looked at me.

“Mom.””

“I’m serious.””

“What are you talking about?””

Linda’s voice lowered.

“Ask her.””

My heart started pounding.

“Ask her what?””

But Linda had already ended the call.

The silence afterward felt heavier than before.

David looked at me.

“Do you know what she means?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

And I didn’t.

I truly didn’t.

But I knew Linda.

She didn’t reveal secrets to help people.

She revealed them to create damage.

Still, one question remained.

Why was she so confident?

Why did she believe there was something she could say that would make David question our entire marriage?

That night, I barely slept.

Around 2:00 a.m., I heard David get out of bed.

I found him sitting downstairs.

The folder was open again.

The documents were spread across the table.

“What are you doing?””

He looked up.

“I found something.””

I walked closer.

“What?””

He pointed to one page.

A handwritten note.

Something we had missed before.

A sentence written in Linda’s handwriting.

*The truth about Sarah’s past will change everything.*

I stared at the words.

My heart started racing.

“My past?””

David looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I could hear the worry in his voice.

“What?””

He turned the paper around.

“Did you ever tell my mother something about before we met?””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Anything she could use against you?””

I thought back.

My childhood.

My college years.

My first job.

Everything.

Then one memory surfaced.

A memory I hadn’t thought about in years.

A memory I had never told Linda.

A memory only a few people knew.

I looked at David.

“I think I know what she means.””

His face changed.

“What?””

I swallowed.

“Sixteen years ago, before we got married…”

I paused.

“There was something that happened.””

David stared at me.

“Something I never told you?””

The words hung between us.

Because suddenly, the person I trusted most was asking the one question I had spent years avoiding.

May you like

And the secret I thought I had buried forever…

Was the one thing Linda had been waiting to use against me.
