Chapter 5

Evelyn was not arrested that night.

That disappointed me.

But Mara explained justice did not always begin with handcuffs.

Sometimes it began with paperwork.

Restraining order.

Emergency financial injunction.

Forensic audit.

Fraud complaint.

Divorce filing.

Police report for assault.

By midnight, Evelyn was removed from the house.

She went screaming.

Not crying.

Screaming.

“You’ll crawl back to me, Daniel!”

He stood in the doorway, pale and shaking, while the officers escorted her down the front steps.

“You’ll be nothing without me!”

The door closed.

The house went silent.

For the first time since I moved in, Evelyn’s voice was not inside it.

Daniel sank into a chair.

I stayed standing.

I did not trust quiet yet.

He looked at me.

“Did you know everything?”

“No.”

“How much?”

“Enough to know I had to leave.”

His face twisted.

“I’m sorry.”

I wanted those words once.

I had wanted them after the first insult.

After the first dinner where Evelyn called me cheap.

After the first time Daniel let her search my purse because she claimed a bracelet was missing.

After the night she locked me out on the balcony for “fresh air” and Daniel said she had a strange sense of humor.

Now the apology arrived too late to be simple.

“I know,” I said.

He flinched.

“I should have protected you.”

“Yes.”

He lowered his head.

“I was afraid of her.”

“I know.”

“I hated myself for it.”

“I know that too.”

He looked up.

“Is there any chance—”

“No.”

The word came out gently.

That made it hurt more.

He nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I signed because I knew you deserved to leave.”

I sat across from him.

“Then why didn’t you tell her?”

He laughed once.

Broken.

“Because I thought if I signed quietly, maybe she would not explode.”

I looked at the shattered tea cup on the floor.

“How did that work?”

For the first time in months, he almost smiled.

Then he cried.

Not loudly.

Not theatrically.

Like someone whose cage had opened and who did not yet know how to walk out.

May you like

I did not hold him.

But I did not leave the room either.
