Chapter 1

My mother-in-law destroyed the divorce papers with hot tea before I could sign my name.

She thought that would stop me.

She thought if the pages were ruined, I would stay trapped in that house, in that marriage, under her voice.

She was wrong.

The dining room was silent except for the sound of tea dripping from the edge of the table.

Dark liquid spread across the papers.

The ink bled.

My name blurred.

The signature line disappeared beneath brown stains.

Evelyn stood over the mess, breathing hard, her pearl necklace trembling against her throat.

“You will not sign anything,” she screamed.

Her voice hit the walls like glass breaking.

“I will not let you leave my son.”

My husband, Daniel, stood behind her.

Silent.

Always silent.

His hands hung at his sides.

His face was pale.

His eyes were fixed on the ruined papers like they were a body on the table.

Six months.

That was all it had taken for Evelyn to turn my marriage into a locked room.

Six months of insults.

Six months of orders.

Six months of Daniel looking away whenever his mother humiliated me.

I had asked for a quiet divorce.

No shouting.

No revenge.

No drama.

Just two signatures and freedom.

But Evelyn did not believe in quiet.

She believed in control.

I stared at the ruined papers.

Then I looked at her.

For the first time, I did not feel small.

I lifted my hand and slapped her across the face.

Once.

Sharp.

Clean.

The sound cracked through the room.

Evelyn stumbled back, one hand flying to her cheek.

Daniel finally moved.

Not toward her.

Toward me.

But I raised one hand to stop him.

“No.”

He froze.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the second set of papers.

Dry.

Clean.

Untouched.

Evelyn’s eyes widened.

“I knew you would do something like this,” I said.

My voice was calm.

That frightened her more than shouting would have.

I opened the packet to the final page.

Then I turned it toward her.

There, above the line waiting for my signature, was Daniel’s name.

Already signed.

Already dated.

Three days ago.

Evelyn stared at it.

Her mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Daniel lowered his head.

And in that terrible silence, I understood the truth.

May you like

He had wanted out too.

He had signed in secret because he was just as afraid of his mother as I was.
