Chapter 9

Money changed everything around me.

Not inside me.

Around me.

Suddenly people who had ignored me wanted lunch.

Reporters wanted interviews.

Daniel’s relatives sent apology texts written like legal statements.

I answered none of them.

Richard offered me a mansion.

A driver.

A position in his foundation.

A trust account so large I stared at the numbers and felt nothing but panic.

“Too much,” I said.

He nodded.

“Then we go slower.”

That was his gift.

He could move mountains.

But with me, he learned to move one chair at a time.

My Ohio parents came to stay for a week.

Richard gave them the guest house.

My mom cried when she saw it.

“This is bigger than our whole home.”

Richard looked nervous.

“You can stay in the main house if you prefer.”

My dad laughed through tears.

“Sir, if this is the guest house, I’m afraid to see the pantry.”

For the first time, Richard laughed.

Real laughter.

I heard my birth mother’s name often that week.

Isabel liked lemon tea.

Isabel danced badly.

Isabel painted flowers on old furniture.

Isabel screamed at a senator once for insulting nurses.

I fell in love with a dead woman through stories.

Daniel moved out.

He did not fight the separation.

He did not ask for money.

He did not defend his mother.

One evening, he came to say goodbye.

“I love you,” he said.

“I know.”

“But I didn’t protect you.”

“No.”

“If there’s ever a chance—”

I shook my head gently.

“Daniel, I need to learn who I am without your family’s shadow.”

He nodded, crying.

“I hope you find her.”

May you like

I touched the old locket at my throat.

“I think she’s been here the whole time.”
