Chapter 2

For a moment, I could not speak.

The hallway seemed to stretch around me.

The wet clothes clinging to my skin.

Margaret’s hand still half-raised.

The strangers in black suits.

The diamond locket shining like a memory I had never been allowed to keep.

“My father?” I whispered.

The man nodded.

“My name is Adrian Cole. I represent Richard Vale.”

Margaret made a choking sound.

“Richard Vale?”

She knew the name.

Everyone knew the name.

Billionaire real estate titan.

Hotels.

Airports.

Private hospitals.

Luxury towers in five countries.

His face had been on business magazines in Daniel’s office.

Margaret had once pointed at him during dinner and said, “That is what real breeding looks like.”

Now his lawyer was standing at her door, looking for me.

Adrian’s eyes moved over my soaked hair and ruined clothes.

His expression tightened.

“Ms. Carter, are you safe here?”

Margaret laughed too loudly.

“She spilled water on herself.”

I looked at her.

Slowly.

The hallway went quiet.

“No,” I said.

“She poured it over me.”

Margaret’s smile died.

Adrian’s face hardened.

One of the men behind him stepped forward, not touching anyone, but somehow making the entire house feel smaller.

“Would you like us to call someone?” Adrian asked.

I almost said no.

That had been my instinct for years.

No trouble.

No scene.

No shame.

Then water dripped from my hair onto the marble floor, and I heard Margaret’s voice in my head.

Know your place.

I lifted my chin.

“Yes.”

Margaret snapped, “Emily, don’t you dare.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Call my husband.”

Margaret smiled with relief.

That was her mistake.

Daniel would usually soften everything for her.

But this time, I wanted him to see the water.

The locket.

The witnesses.

The truth.

Adrian dialed.

When Daniel answered, Adrian put him on speaker.

“Mr. Harris, this is Adrian Cole, legal counsel for Richard Vale. I am standing in your mother’s home with your wife. She is soaked in dirty water and says your mother assaulted her.”

Silence.

Then Daniel’s voice.

“What?”

Margaret lunged toward the phone.

“That is a lie!”

I stepped back.

Adrian did not move.

Daniel’s voice changed.

“Mom?”

Margaret’s face twisted.

“She was disrespectful.”

Daniel went silent again.

And in that silence, I heard eighteen months of cowardice.

Then Adrian spoke.

May you like

“Mr. Harris, there is something else. Your wife is Richard Vale’s daughter.”

Daniel stopped breathing.
