Chapter 6: The Account With My Name On It
I stared at the document on the table.
My name.
My address.
My information.
But an account I had never opened.
For a few seconds, my mind refused to process what I was seeing.
It was impossible.
I had spent the last hour believing I was finally uncovering Victoria’s secrets.
Now I was looking at evidence that seemed to point back at me.
Daniel looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“Claire?””
I couldn’t answer.
My throat felt dry.
“I don’t know what that is.””
Victoria’s expression changed instantly.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Relief.
A small flicker of relief.
And I noticed.
Because she had expected this moment.
Lauren saw it too.
“She wants you to panic,” Lauren said quietly.
Victoria turned toward her.
“You need to leave.””
Lauren didn’t move.
“No.””
The word was simple.
But it carried years of fear.
“I spent two years staying quiet because I was scared of you.””
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“And now?””
Lauren looked at the folder.
“Now I’m tired.””
The guests were still there.
Hundreds of people.
But the wedding no longer felt like a celebration.
It felt like a courtroom.
Everyone was watching.
Everyone was waiting.
Daniel picked up the document.
“What is this?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“Claire.””
His voice wasn’t accusing.
But I heard the question underneath.
How can this exist if you don’t know?
“I swear to you, Daniel. I have never opened an account like this.””
Victoria immediately stepped closer.
“Of course you haven’t.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her tone had changed.
She sounded almost sympathetic.
“She probably doesn’t remember.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria folded her arms.
“You were under a lot of stress before the wedding.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
“What?””
She shrugged.
“I’m just saying she has been hiding things.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
Not because she accused me.
Because she knew exactly how to twist the truth.
She always did.
“You’re trying to make me look guilty.””
Victoria smiled faintly.
“I’m trying to understand.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re trying to make everyone forget what you did.””
The room became quiet.
I pointed toward the screen still displaying the security footage.
“You tried to drug me.””
Then toward the folder.
“And now you’re changing the subject.””
Victoria’s face hardened.
For the first time, she looked less like a powerful businesswoman and more like someone cornered.
Daniel looked at Lauren.
“Where did you get these?””
Lauren opened the folder.
“From Victoria’s office.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Daniel stared.
“You went into my mother’s office?””
“I was looking for something else.””
“What?””
Lauren looked down.
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That she had been manipulating both of us.””
Victoria laughed.
A cold, humorless laugh.
“You expect my son to believe you?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””
That sentence hurt her.
I saw it.
Because Victoria had spent her entire life believing Daniel would always choose her.
Then she looked at me.
“You should be careful.””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because if those documents are real, you may not be the victim you think you are.””
I hated that a part of me wondered.
Not because I believed her.
Because the evidence was right there.
My name.
A bank account.
A mystery.
And I had no explanation.
Daniel noticed my expression.
He stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know what this is.””
He nodded slowly.
“I believe you.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
“You do?””
“Yes.””
No hesitation.
No doubt.
“But I need the truth.””
I swallowed.
“I know.””
He turned toward Lauren.
“Keep going.””
Lauren took a breath.
“The account was opened three months before Claire and I met.””
I looked at her.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I found the original paperwork.””
She flipped another page.
“This account received transfers from a company connected to Victoria.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What company?””
Lauren pointed.
“Whitmore Holdings.””
A murmur moved through the guests.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Why would your company send money to an account under Claire’s name?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
That was the first mistake she made.
She always had an answer.
A clever response.
A carefully prepared explanation.
But now?
Nothing.
I watched her.
And I realized something.
She wasn’t shocked by the accusation.
She was shocked that Lauren had proof.
“Mom.””
Daniel’s voice was lower.
“Answer me.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around.
At the guests.
At the cameras.
At the people who had spent years believing she was untouchable.
Then she looked back at her son.
“This is not the place.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You tried to poison my wife at our wedding.””
His voice broke.
“I think we passed the point where this stopped being a private conversation.””
Victoria flinched.
That was the first time I saw her wounded.
Not angry.
Wounded.
Because Daniel wasn’t defending her.
He wasn’t asking her to forgive herself.
He was demanding answers.
Victoria slowly walked toward the table.
She picked up the document.
“You want the truth?””
Everyone held their breath.
“Fine.””
She looked at me.
“The account was created because someone needed access.””
I frowned.
“Access to what?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“To your family.””
My stomach dropped.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“Your wife’s family was in financial trouble before you met her.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No, you don’t.””
Her eyes returned to me.
“Do you?””
I felt a cold feeling spread through my body.
“What are you saying?””
She smiled.
“I’m saying the business problems weren’t random.””
The room went still.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“My father’s business?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
“No, that was because of the market.””
Victoria tilted her head.
“That’s what you were told.””
My heart started racing.
Daniel looked confused.
“Mom, what are you saying?””
Victoria looked at him.
“I’m saying Claire’s family was already connected to us before she ever met you.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
She looked at Lauren.
“You found the records.””
Lauren nodded.
“But not all of them.””
Victoria smiled.
And suddenly, I understood.
She wasn’t afraid anymore.
Because she still had another secret.
Another weapon.
Another piece of the puzzle.
“Claire,” Victoria said softly.
“Do you know why your father’s company failed?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t want to.
Because I already knew I might not like what came next.
Victoria leaned closer.
“Because someone made sure it would.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Mom.””
But Victoria didn’t stop.
She looked directly at me.
“The person who destroyed your family’s business…”
She paused.
“And the person who opened that account in your name…”
Another pause.
“…are the same person.””
The room felt like it tilted.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Lauren.
Then Victoria.
“No.””
My voice was barely audible.
“That’s impossible.””
Victoria smiled.
And that smile terrified me.
Because it wasn’t the smile of someone winning.
It was the smile of someone revealing a truth she had been waiting years to tell.
Then my phone vibrated.
Once.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
There was a photograph attached.
A photograph of my father.
Standing beside Victoria Whitmore.
Taken five years before I met Daniel.
May you like
And underneath the image was one sentence:
*Your mother-in-law didn’t enter your life by accident. She was there long before your wedding day.*
