Chapter 7

Evelyn left before the police arrived.

But she left poison behind.

Daniel stood in the foyer, staring at the closed door.

I knew what he was thinking.

I hated that I knew.

Sophia’s biological father, Aaron, had been gone since before her birth.

He had signed legal papers.

He had taken a small settlement from my late grandmother’s estate and disappeared.

I had never hidden that from Daniel.

But Evelyn’s words made it sound like something else.

Like I had lied.

Like Sophia could be taken.

Like Daniel was not really her father.

I turned to Priya.

“Can she do anything?”

Priya’s face was serious.

“Not without proof. But we need to review the adoption file.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You have copies?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In the fireproof box upstairs.”

He nodded.

“I’ll get them.”

“No,” I said.

He stopped.

“I’ll get them.”

The old me might have let him.

The new me needed to hold my own papers in my own hands.

I went upstairs and unlocked the box.

Sophia’s birth certificate.

The termination of Aaron’s parental rights.

Daniel’s adoption decree.

Letters from the court.

Medical records.

Everything was there.

Everything looked right.

But at the bottom, beneath a folder of old tax papers, I found an envelope I did not recognize.

Cream paper.

No return address.

My maiden name written across the front.

Claire Monroe.

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter dated five years earlier.

Two weeks before Daniel and I married.

Claire,

You do not know me, but my name is James Bennett. I am Daniel’s father.

My wife has learned about your daughter’s biological father. She has contacted him. I do not know what she offered him, but I believe she intends to use him against you if Daniel marries you.

I am ashamed to write this instead of saying it aloud.

Keep every document safe.

Never trust Evelyn with your child.

I am sorry.

James

I sat on the bedroom floor, shaking.

James had known.

Not everything.

But enough.

I carried the letter downstairs.

When Daniel read it, he looked at his father.

James covered his face.

“I sent it.”

My voice came out thin.

“You never told me in person.”

“I was afraid.”

I laughed once.

So many people had been afraid in this family.

Afraid of Evelyn.

Afraid of shame.

Afraid of losing money.

And somehow, Sophia and I were always the ones who paid.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Dad, what did Mom do?”

James lowered his hands.

“She found Aaron through a private investigator before the wedding. She wanted him to challenge custody.”

My heart pounded.

“He signed away his rights.”

“She thought if he came back, Daniel would leave you.”

Daniel looked sick.

“Why didn’t he?”

James swallowed.

“I paid him.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You what?”

“I paid him to stay gone.”

My hands began to tremble.

Daniel stood.

“You paid off Sophia’s biological father and never told us?”

James nodded, tears in his eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“No,” I said.

My voice was quiet.

Deadly.

“You were protecting your peace.”

He flinched.

Priya stepped forward.

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand.”

“Do you have proof?”

James nodded.

“Wire transfer. Signed agreement.”

Priya’s expression hardened.

“We need it.”

Daniel paced once, then stopped.

“Could Aaron come back now?”

Priya answered carefully.

“Legally, Daniel is Sophia’s father. Adoption is final. But if Evelyn is contacting Aaron again, she may be trying to create harassment, custody pressure, or public doubt.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered on speaker.

A man’s voice came through.

“Claire?”

My stomach dropped.

I knew that voice.

Older.

Rougher.

But I knew.

Aaron.

He laughed softly.

“Tell Daniel I’d like to meet my daughter.”

Sophia’s bedroom door opened upstairs.

“Mommy?”

I looked up.

She stood on the landing in pajamas, clutching her bunny.

May you like

Aaron spoke again.

“Or maybe I’ll just come by.”
