brave

Chapter 6

By noon, Detective Vega was back at our house.

This time she brought another officer and an evidence bag.

She stood in our kitchen with the calm expression of a woman who had seen rich families behave badly and poor families get blamed for it.

“Mrs. Bennett,” she said, “your attorney sent the insurance documents.”

I nodded.

“James found them.”

Daniel’s father stood by the sink, looking like the floor might open beneath him.

“I should have told someone sooner,” he said.

Detective Vega looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?”

James swallowed.

“Because my wife told me I misunderstood.”

No one spoke.

That sentence explained thirty-five years of marriage.

Detective Vega bagged Evelyn’s ring, took another copy of the kitchen footage, and asked Daniel to forward all messages from family members since the party.

There were many.

Most were ugly.

Some were threats.

Lisa had written twelve times.

Tell Claire to admit it.

Mom can still make this go away.

Sophia is a liar.

That last one made Daniel stand up so quickly his chair scraped the floor.

“I’m going to my sister’s apartment.”

“No,” Detective Vega said.

He turned.

“She called my daughter a liar.”

“And if you go angry, you give her another story to tell.”

I watched him force himself to sit.

That was new.

Daniel had spent years avoiding conflict.

Now he had to learn the difference between courage and explosion.

Priya arrived at two.

She wore a navy suit and carried a folder thick enough to make Evelyn nervous from across town.

She hugged me first.

Then she crouched to Sophia’s level.

“I heard you were very brave.”

Sophia hid behind my leg.

Priya smiled gently.

“Brave people can be shy too.”

Sophia peeked out.

“Are you going to make Grandma stop being mean?”

“I’m going to help your mom keep you safe.”

Sophia considered that.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.”

Priya stood and turned to Daniel.

“We need temporary protective orders.”

His face tightened.

“Against my mother and sister?”

“Yes.”

He looked at Sophia.

Then at me.

“Do it.”

The words came faster this time.

My chest loosened a little.

Not forgiveness.

But a little air.

That evening, Evelyn came.

Of course she did.

She pulled into our driveway in a silver Mercedes, dressed like she was arriving for brunch.

Lisa was with her.

So was Carol, the aunt who posted the video.

I watched them through the front window.

Daniel came to stand beside me.

“Don’t open the door,” I said.

He nodded.

Evelyn rang the bell.

Once.

Twice.

Then she pounded.

“Daniel. Open this door.”

Sophia was upstairs with Mark and his wife.

Safe.

Still, my pulse climbed.

Daniel opened the security app and tapped the intercom.

“Leave.”

Evelyn looked up at the camera.

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You are trespassing.”

Lisa stepped forward.

“Claire is manipulating you.”

I took the phone from Daniel.

My hand was steady.

“Lisa, the police have the footage.”

Her face flickered.

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“Good. Then they know you attacked me.”

“They also know you tried to file a false insurance claim.”

Carol’s mouth dropped open.

Lisa turned sharply toward Evelyn.

“What?”

Evelyn’s eyes flashed.

“Shut up.”

Daniel took the phone back.

“Mom, leave before we call the police.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“You think you can cut me out? I made you. I protected you. I kept that little girl’s real father from ruining your marriage.”

The world stopped.

Daniel went still.

My blood turned cold.

“What did she just say?” I whispered.

Evelyn realized she had gone too far.

She stepped back.

Lisa grabbed her arm.

“Mom.”

Daniel’s voice came through the speaker like ice.

“What real father?”

Evelyn smiled, but it shook.

“Ask your wife.”

My body felt hollow.

Daniel turned to me.

“Claire?”

I could barely breathe.

“Sophia’s biological father signed away his rights before she was born.”

Evelyn laughed through the intercom.

“Did he?”

I stared at the screen.

At her smug face.

At the secret she had been saving like a knife.

Then Priya’s voice came from behind us.

“She’s lying to destabilize you.”

But even Priya looked uncertain.

And Evelyn saw it.

May you like

She smiled wider.

“The truth is expensive, Claire. Are you sure you can afford it?”
