Chapter 8: The Father Who Stayed Silent

The message came from a number I had saved three years ago.

A number I had never expected to see again.

*Richard Carter.*

Ethan’s father.

For several seconds, I simply stared at the screen.

The name felt impossible.

Richard had always been the quiet one.

The man who sat at family dinners and rarely spoke.

The man who watched Marianne criticize me and never interrupted.

The man who watched Ethan dismiss my feelings and called it “marriage.””

I had spent years thinking he was harmless because he was silent.

Now I wondered if silence had been his way of participating.

“What did he send you?”” Claire asked.

I showed her the picture.

Her eyes narrowed.

“He took this?””

“I don’t know.””

The image showed Ethan and Marianne in my kitchen.

The camera was visible in Ethan’s hand.

Both of them were looking directly at it.

Like they knew it was there.

Like they knew exactly what they were doing.

Claire read the message again.

*You need to know what happened before the dinner.*

I typed a response.

*Who are you?*

Then deleted it.

Of course he knew who I was.

Instead, I wrote:

*What do you mean?*

The reply came almost instantly.

*I should have told you sooner.*

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Claire.

“He knew.””

She nodded.

“Ask him what.””

I typed.

*What did you know?*

The three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally, the answer came.

*Everything.*

The word felt heavier than it should have.

Everything.

I had spent years searching for one person who would admit the truth.

Now the person who had known the most had been standing quietly in the background.

I typed:

*Call me.*

My phone rang before I could put it down.

I answered.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I heard his voice.

Older.

Tired.

Different from the man I knew at family gatherings.

“Elena.””

I closed my eyes.

“Richard.””

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

Not because they fixed anything.

Because I had never heard him apologize for anything.

“Why are you calling me?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Because Ethan is going to destroy himself trying to control this.””

My jaw tightened.

“Control what?””

“The story.””

I looked at Claire.

“What story?””

Richard exhaled.

“The one he created.””

The anger I had been holding for days finally broke through.

“Your son left me injured on the floor.””

“I know.””

The answer was immediate.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

His silence was painful.

Because it was an answer.

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You weren’t wrong. You chose.””

Richard didn’t argue.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“I told myself staying quiet protected my family.””

“You protected Ethan.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“I thought if I stayed out of it, things would calm down.””

I laughed bitterly.

“They don’t calm down when people are allowed to hurt others.””

“I know that now.””

“No.””

I looked toward the street.

“You know that because it happened to someone you care about.””

Silence.

Richard had no defense.

Because there was none.

“Tell me what happened before dinner,” I said.

He took a breath.

“Three days before.””

I waited.

“Ethan came to see me.””

“Why?””

“He wanted advice.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“He said you were becoming impossible.””

The same words.

Again.

Like a script.

“He said you were disrespecting Marianne.””

I shook my head.

“Of course he did.””

“But I knew something was different.””

“What?””

“He wasn’t angry.””

That confused me.

“What do you mean?””

“Ethan wasn’t venting.””

Richard paused.

“He was planning.””

The word sent a chill through me.

“What was he planning?””

“I asked him that.””

“And?””

“He said he needed to teach you a lesson.””

My hands went cold.

“Your son said that?””

“Yes.””

“What did you do?””

The silence returned.

A painful one.

“I told him to be careful.””

I closed my eyes.

“You told him to be careful?””

“Yes.””

“That’s it?””

“I was afraid of confronting him.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Richard, you are his father.””

“I know.””

“You raised him.””

“I know.””

“And you were afraid?””

His answer came quietly.

“Yes.””

That stopped me.

Because anger was easier when people were simple.

When they were just villains.

But Richard was not innocent.

He was weak.

And weakness could still cause damage.

“Why are you telling me now?””

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“The original recording.””

My heart started racing.

“What recording?””

“The one from your house.””

I stood still.

“The kitchen camera?””

“Yes.””

“But Ethan thought he controlled it.””

“He did.””

“Then how do you have it?””

Richard paused.

“Because he didn’t know there was a backup.””

Twenty minutes later, Richard arrived.

He looked older than I remembered.

The confident businessman from family gatherings was gone.

In his place was a tired man carrying years of regret.

He handed Claire a small storage device.

“This is everything.””

Aaron, the detective, had been contacted and arrived shortly after.

He examined the device carefully.

“What exactly is on this?””

Richard looked at me.

“The truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Aaron connected it to his laptop.

A video appeared.

The timestamp showed the day before the dinner.

The kitchen.

Empty.

Then Ethan entered.

My heart started pounding.

He was alone.

He looked around.

Then placed the camera.

Not hidden.

Not rushed.

Careful.

Intentional.

A few minutes later, Marianne entered.

They spoke.

The audio was faint at first.

Aaron adjusted it.

Then Ethan’s voice came through.

“She’s too comfortable.””

Marianne replied:

“She always has been.””

My hands tightened.

“She thinks because she earns more, she has power.””

“She needs to remember who family belongs to.””

Ethan laughed.

“I know.””

The recording continued.

My entire body felt numb.

They weren’t arguing.

They weren’t reacting.

They were discussing.

Planning.

Marianne asked:

“What if she refuses?””

Ethan answered:

“She won’t.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I know her.””

A pause.

“She’ll blame herself.””

I looked away.

Because he was right.

He knew me.

He knew exactly how much I would tolerate.

Exactly how many times I would forgive.

Exactly how long I would try to save the marriage.

The recording continued.

Marianne said:

“And if she doesn’t?””

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“Then we make sure everyone sees what she’s really like.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Aaron spoke.

“This changes everything.””

Richard looked down.

“I should have stopped him.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For once, I didn’t need an excuse.

I didn’t need an explanation.

Because the truth was simple.

People had choices.

And they lived with them.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message from Ethan.

I opened it.

*I know my father talked to you.*

My heart dropped.

Another message appeared.

*You should ask him why he never protected his first wife.*

I froze.

Claire noticed.

“What?””

I showed her.

Richard’s face changed.

“What did he say?””

I looked at him.

“Your first wife?””

The room became silent.

Richard looked away.

And that was the moment I realized.

There was another story.

Another woman.

Another secret.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Richard didn’t answer.

“Richard.””

His voice was barely audible.

“My first wife left me because of Ethan.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

“She saw what he was becoming.””

Claire stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“It means Marianne wasn’t the only person who taught him those behaviors.””

I stared.

“Who was?””

He looked at me.

And the sadness in his eyes told me the answer before he spoke.

“Me.””

The room went completely quiet.

Then Richard said the words that changed the entire case.

“Ethan didn’t become this way because of his mother.””

He looked at the video on the screen.

“He became this way because he learned that hurting people could be hidden.””

My phone buzzed again.

A new message.

From Ethan.

One sentence.

*You think you know the truth, Elena. But you have no idea what your own family has been hiding from you.*

I stared at the screen.

Because for the first time…

I wondered if Ethan was telling the truth about one thing.

May you like

There was still a secret.

And it was closer to me than I realized.
