Chapter 6: The Person I Trusted Most
The photograph was only one page.
One small piece of paper.
Yet the moment I saw it, it felt heavier than everything else in the folder.
I stared at the image.
Then I looked at Claire.
Then back at the image.
My mind refused to process what I was seeing.
“Why is my sister there?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me more than the photograph itself.
Because Claire always had an answer.
She was the person who had walked into my kitchen when nobody else came.
The person who took me to the hospital.
The person who told me I wasn’t imagining things.
But now she was silent.
“Claire.””
She swallowed.
“I wanted to tell you when I had more information.””
I picked up the photograph with shaking fingers.
It showed my house.
The same house where I had spent three years building a life.
The same front porch where Ethan kissed me after our wedding.
The same driveway where he had watched me leave for work every morning.
And standing beside him was my younger sister, Lily.
My own sister.
“When was this taken?””
“Two weeks before the dinner.””
I looked at her.
“Two weeks?””
Claire nodded.
“Security footage from a neighbor’s camera.””
I stared at the image again.
“They were meeting?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know yet.””
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Claire, my sister was standing with my husband behind my back.””
“I know.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
“Do you?””
Claire looked hurt.
But she didn’t look away.
“You’re right. I don’t know what you’re feeling.””
I stood up too quickly.
Pain shot through my shoulder.
I ignored it.
“I spent years protecting Ethan from everyone.””
My voice cracked.
“I defended him when people said he was controlling.””
I looked at the photograph.
“I defended him when my friends told me he treated me differently in public than in private.””
My fingers tightened.
“And now my sister?””
Claire stayed quiet.
Because there was nothing she could say.
The truth was already there.
The people I trusted most had been standing in the same room as my enemies.
I called Lily three times.
She didn’t answer.
The first call went to voicemail.
The second rang longer.
The third was ignored.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because silence was an answer too.
I sat on Claire’s couch, staring at my phone.
“What if there’s an explanation?””
Claire sat across from me.
“There might be.””
I looked at her.
“You believe that?””
“I believe we don’t know everything.””
That was exactly why I trusted her.
She didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear.
She told me what was true.
“But we do know something,” she continued.
“What?””
“Your husband and your sister were meeting secretly.””
I nodded slowly.
“And they didn’t want me to know.””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Lily.
I opened it immediately.
*We need to talk. Alone.*
I stared at the screen.
Claire noticed.
“Your sister?””
I nodded.
“What did she say?””
I showed her.
Claire’s expression became serious.
“Are you going to meet her?””
“I have to.””
“Why?””
“Because I need to know why.””
Claire leaned forward.
“Don’t go alone.””
“I’m not afraid of Lily.””
“I know.””
She paused.
“But sometimes the people closest to us can hurt us the most.””
The sentence stayed with me.
We met the next afternoon at a small coffee shop downtown.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere with cameras.
Somewhere I felt slightly safer.
Lily arrived ten minutes late.
That alone felt strange.
My sister was never late.
Not for me.
She sat across from me and looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Exhausted.
“Elena…”
I waited.
She looked at my shoulder.
“What happened?””
I almost laughed.
“You don’t know?””
Her face changed.
“I heard about the hospital.””
“From who?””
She looked away.
And that told me enough.
“Ethan?””
Silence.
“Lily.””
She sighed.
“Yes.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“How long have you been talking to him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“It’s not what you think.””
I leaned back.
“Everyone says that right before they explain exactly what I think.””
She looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
“What kind of mistake?””
She rubbed her hands together nervously.
“I was angry at you.””
The words surprised me.
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because after Mom died, I felt like you became the responsible one.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with Ethan?””
“Everything.””
She looked at me.
“You always had everything together. Your career. Your marriage. Your life.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Lily, you think my life was perfect?””
“I thought you thought you were better than me.””
The pain of those words was different.
Not because they were true.
Because they came from someone I loved.
“I never thought that.””
“Maybe not consciously.””
I stared at her.
She looked ashamed.
“I was jealous.””
“Of me?””
“Yes.””
I waited.
“Ethan noticed.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“He knew I was struggling.””
My voice became quiet.
“He talked to you about me?””
She nodded.
“At first, he just listened.””
I felt sick.
Because I knew that trick.
Ethan made people feel understood.
He made them feel chosen.
“He told me you were difficult sometimes.””
My stomach turned.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
Lily looked away.
“That you cared more about being right than being kind.””
I felt something crack inside me.
Not because Ethan said it.
Because Lily believed him.
“And you trusted him?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why were you meeting him?””
She covered her face for a moment.
“Because he made me feel like someone finally saw me.””
I looked out the window.
The irony was almost unbearable.
Ethan had always been good at finding the people who needed something.
Approval.
Attention.
Validation.
And then using it.
“Did you know about the dinner?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
“Lily.””
She started crying.
“I knew something was going to happen.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
“I didn’t know he was going to hurt you.””
My voice dropped.
“You knew something was going to happen?””
She nodded.
“Ethan said he needed to teach you a lesson.””
My hands went cold.
“A lesson?””
“He said you were becoming impossible to control.””
I looked at her.
“Control?””
She closed her eyes.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
“Ethan told me he loved you.””
I stared.
“And you believed him?””
“I thought he was just frustrated.””
“Lily.””
My voice broke.
“He left me on the floor.””
She started crying harder.
“I know.””
“How?””
She froze.
That was when I noticed.
She wasn’t surprised.
She wasn’t asking what happened.
She already knew.
My heart sank.
“You saw.””
Lily looked down.
“Elena…”
“You saw what happened.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I was outside.””
I felt numb.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you help me?””
She couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer that would make it acceptable.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of him.””
The words stopped me.
Because for the first time, Lily wasn’t defending him.
She was afraid of him too.
“What else did you see?””
She wiped her face.
“After you left.””
“What?””
“Ethan went back into the kitchen.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
Lily looked at me.
“Because he thought he forgot something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The camera.””
I stopped breathing.
“What did he do?””
Lily looked toward the window.
“He checked it.””
My hands trembled.
“And?””
“He smiled.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
Lily’s voice became barely audible.
“Because he thought nobody would ever see what happened.””
The coffee shop noise disappeared.
People talking.
Cups clinking.
Music playing.
Everything faded.
Except her final words.
“He said something before he left.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“He said…”
A tear fell down her cheek.
“He said, ‘By tomorrow, Elena will either apologize or lose everything.’”
My heart pounded.
Lose everything.
Those words sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
Because Ethan had not just been trying to punish me.
He had been planning something.
I stood up.
“Where is he now?””
Lily looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because I need to know what he’s doing.””
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Ms. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“This is Detective Aaron Mitchell.””
My heart stopped.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was a pause.
Then:
“We found something in your home.””
I gripped the phone.
“What?””
His voice became serious.
“You need to come back immediately.””
“Why?””
“Because the evidence we discovered suggests your husband was preparing for this situation before it happened.””
I looked at Lily.
Then at Claire’s folder sitting on the table.
The picture.
The lies.
The planning.
“Preparing how?””
The detective was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“By making sure that if you ever accused him…”
May you like
I held my breath.
“…everyone would believe you were the problem.””
