Chapter 5: The Memory I Was Never Supposed To Recover

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

It landed on the table between us.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

I stared at the image like my eyes were refusing to accept what they were seeing.

A younger Daniel Cross.

A younger Ranger.

And a little girl standing between them.

Me.

But that was impossible.

I had never met Daniel Cross.

I had never been to a military base as a child.

At least...

That was what I believed.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked.

My voice sounded distant.

General Marcus Vale leaned back slightly.

For the first time, he looked satisfied.

"Finally asking the right question.""

Daniel grabbed the photograph.

His hands trembled as he examined it.

"Emily?""

His wife took the picture.

The second she saw it, her expression changed.

"I didn't know.""

Daniel looked at her.

"What do you mean you didn't know?""

Emily stared at the image.

"Because this wasn't in the files I found.""

Commander Whitmore stepped closer.

"Someone explain.""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Daniel looked at me.

And something in his eyes changed.

Recognition.

Not from the photo.

From a memory.

"Your name.""

I swallowed.

"What about it?""

"What was your full name before you joined the military?""

The question confused me.

"Sarah Miller.""

Daniel looked at Whitmore.

Then back at me.

"No.""

The word was quiet.

But certain.

"That's not your original name.""

A cold feeling moved through my body.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel placed the photograph down.

"When I first met her...""

He pointed at the little girl.

"Her name was Sarah Cross.""

The room went silent.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn't process it.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"That isn't possible.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"I know how this sounds.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice became sharper.

"You don't get to walk in here and tell me my entire life is a lie.""

I pushed the photograph toward him.

"My parents are Sarah and Michael Miller.""

Daniel didn't look away.

"Those were the people who raised you.""

The words hit me harder than I expected.

"Raised me?""

I stepped back.

"You're saying they're not my parents?""

Emily spoke softly.

"Sarah...""

I looked at her.

She looked like she wanted to say something.

But she was afraid.

"What?""

She hesitated.

Then opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old records.

Medical files.

Adoption papers.

My hands went cold.

"No.""

Daniel moved closer.

"Listen to me.""

"I don't want to listen.""

The room became painfully quiet.

Because the truth was standing in front of me.

And I hated it.

Commander Whitmore ordered everyone to take a break.

I walked outside.

I needed air.

The base suddenly felt different.

Every building.

Every hallway.

Every person.

Everything felt like it belonged to a life I didn't remember.

Ranger followed me.

Of course he did.

I sat on a bench near the training field.

"You knew.""

The dog sat beside me.

"You knew before I did.""

Ranger lowered his head.

I touched his fur.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

A ridiculous question.

He was a dog.

But somehow, I expected him to understand.

And he did.

He leaned against me.

The same way he had when he protected me from Bennett.

I closed my eyes.

A strange image flashed through my mind.

A room.

A red blanket.

A man's voice.

"She's going to be okay, Ranger.""

I opened my eyes suddenly.

My heart raced.

Another memory.

A different one.

A little boy's toy on the floor.

A woman crying.

A dog barking.

I grabbed my head.

"Stop.""

The memories came faster.

Not clear.

Not complete.

But real.

Someone had taken them from me.

Or I had buried them.

That evening, Daniel found me in the empty training field.

The sun was disappearing behind the buildings.

"I owe you an explanation.""

I didn't turn around.

"Yes.""

He stopped.

"I was your father's closest friend.""

I looked at him.

"My father?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your real father.""

The word felt strange.

"Who was he?""

Daniel looked toward the horizon.

"Captain Andrew Cross.""

My breath caught.

"Your brother?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"My brother's name was Daniel Cross.""

He touched his chest.

"I was your father's best friend.""

I stared at him.

"Then why are you in the picture?""

Daniel gave a sad smile.

"Because when your parents died, I promised I would protect you.""

The air left my lungs.

"My parents died?""

He nodded slowly.

"There was an accident.""

"An accident?""

Daniel looked away.

"No.""

The hesitation told me everything.

"What really happened?""

He was quiet.

Then:

"They discovered Vale's program.""

My stomach tightened.

"My parents knew?""

"They tried to expose it.""

"And?""

Daniel's jaw clenched.

"And someone made sure they couldn't.""

I spent the next hour listening.

Daniel told me about a hidden military project.

About officers who believed obedience mattered more than compassion.

About experiments designed to create perfect working animals.

Ranger was one of the few who resisted.

Not because he wasn't trained.

Because he was trained too well.

He understood loyalty.

He understood trust.

And he understood when something was wrong.

"My father gave Ranger to you?""

I asked.

Daniel nodded.

"After your parents died, Ranger stayed with me.""

"Then why don't I remember any of this?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because we had to hide you.""

"From who?""

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

I already knew.

"Vale.""

Daniel nodded.

"He knew your family had evidence.""

"What evidence?""

"The original files proving his program existed.""

I looked at him.

"And my parents hid them?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

Daniel's expression changed.

"I don't know.""

"Then why did Vale say Ranger found me?""

Daniel was silent.

Too silent.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"Because before your father died, he created a backup plan.""

"What backup plan?""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Ranger.""

I frowned.

"A dog?""

"Not just a dog.""

He looked toward the kennel.

"Your father knew humans could be threatened. Bought. Controlled.""

A pause.

"But Ranger couldn't be.""

I understood.

Slowly.

"He trained Ranger to find me.""

Daniel nodded.

"And protect the evidence.""

The next morning, Commander Whitmore brought us into the investigation room.

General Vale was still under questioning.

But something was wrong.

The security team had discovered that several files had been deleted overnight.

Someone inside the base was helping him.

Whitmore placed a tablet on the table.

"We recovered one remaining file.""

The screen showed a document.

At the top was a name.

*PROJECT RANGER*

My heart tightened.

Daniel leaned forward.

"This isn't possible.""

Whitmore scrolled down.

The file contained years of information.

Training.

Assignments.

Behavior reports.

Then we saw something unexpected.

A video file.

Recorded fifteen years earlier.

Whitmore pressed play.

The screen showed a younger Daniel Cross standing in a training facility.

Beside him was Ranger.

And beside Ranger...

Was me.

A little girl.

The younger version of me was holding onto Ranger's collar.

A man behind the camera spoke.

"Sarah, tell Ranger what you promised.""

The little girl smiled.

"I promise I'll protect him too.""

I stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His eyes filled with tears.

Because he remembered.

Then the video continued.

A shadow appeared behind the camera.

A familiar voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

General Vale.

"You don't understand, Andrew.""

My father's voice answered.

"If anything happens to my family, Ranger will expose you.""

Vale laughed.

"You think a dog can beat me?""

The video shook.

Then my father said something that made everyone in the room freeze.

"Not the dog.""

A pause.

"The girl.""

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Ranger suddenly stood.

He walked to the corner of the room.

And began scratching at the floor.

Whitmore looked confused.

"What is he doing?""

Daniel's face changed.

"He knows.""

"Knows what?""

Daniel stared at the spot beneath Ranger's paws.

"The final piece of evidence.""

A hidden compartment was discovered beneath the floor.

Inside was a small metal box.

And on top of it was a note.

Written in my father's handwriting.

*"Sarah, when you remember who you are, open this.""*

My hands shook as I reached for it.

But before I could open the box...

The lights went out.

A gunshot echoed somewhere inside the building.

May you like

And when the emergency lights turned on...

The metal box was gone.
